Prior to getting the 275t I was using a Garmin Etrex Vista with basic street maps and of course no navigation.
To get the best out of this unit you really need to do a lot of research, there are several forums that go over the various hidden (and slightly obscure) features of this unit. Things like holding down over the battery symbol leads you to the service menu, and holding the GPS signal strength leads you to the constellation map. To return the the Navigation screen just hold down on the BACK button for a few seconds.
However,
I do wish they could teach this unit how to say "Recalculating." It's not "recalculeting".
As others have said, never take the first couple directions at face value. First look at the map.
Pro: Good battery life, easy to read and understand
Con:
TTS has a hard time with Spanish street names and other non-English streets.
Directions are sometimes confusing. Telling me to stay on 90 West East, when the road is actually I-90 Eastbound.
Not the brightest in picking optimal routes. Shortest is not always best, and fastest sometimes actually tells you to take a much longer route. The unit needs to have better "sense" of roads and speeds. But in all honesty the directions would get you there.
POIs are along the road, so you have to think about if they will be on the left or right. I wish they could include at least a (on your left/right) based on some logic or proximity. When you add POIs, you should put them on the road or the garmin can give you bad directions.
Editing needs improvement. There is only a backspace key, no < or > that would allow you to edit just part of a word.
You can add waypoints (intermediate stops), but you can't delete them without stopping the entire trip. This is annoying if you stop close to the waypoint.
I noticed that it also gets confused on installations where there are just a few gates. The garmin wanted me to take a residential up (and probably through) a fence rather than turn and go in the proper gate. That is an error in the base map and there is no way to edit the base map that I am aware of.
When you hook this up to your computer you will see two drives. The Garmin and the MicroSD. Take that time to copy the whole garmin over to your hard drive and burn a DVD. Then you can go in and clear up space for all the languages you won't use.
This unit needs to come with POI (Point Of Interest) and Favorites management software. There are Garmin and third-party apps out there, but they should ship it with basic software tools.
I'll have more comments later. Still playing with this doodad.

After spending many hours online trying to get the 1 free map update to install, with my firewalls and antivirus/spyware disabled I might add, I gave up and called Garmin. The wait was about 30 minutes as was expected. The gentleman I worked with was really helpful. They offered to send me a CD to upgrade the NA map. The problem was when I clicked "Launch" after the download file had completed (4-5 hours), at 10% I got an error message "file corrupted". This happened 3 times. As it turned out the maps I had on my 275T were ver.2010.10. The latest release was only 2 1/2 weeks ago ver.2010.20. I didn't realize my maps weren't that outdated. So I chose not to do an update. My advise if you try to do the free update, is to verify how old your maps are first. The product works very well except for the Bluetooth phone connection. It had a terrible amplifier screech when I tried a call. But then I really don't care as It was only a test and I'm not into cell phones very much.

Okay, what if we got lost on European roadways during our vacation, stopped to ask directions and couldn't speak the language? I envisioned incredible levels of frustration. Therefore, we purchased the Garmin nuvi 275T before going and hoped for the best. What happened after that was pure magic. I looked up the destination (hotel, attraction, restaurant, residence, etc.) on the nuvi, pressed "GO" and it got me on the door step every time! I never looked at a map, asked for directions or experienced any frustration. We traveled through Germany, Czech Rebuplic, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxenbourg with incredible ease. I admit I am directionally impaired so I was amazed at how well this unit performed.
I was a little concerned if the power plug on foreign automobiles was the same on United States autos. Yes, they are the same. So we can plug this into any car's 12v power plug, regardless of country. This unit also accepts lat/long coordinate information as well so it can be also used for geocaching.
Once back in the United States, we have used it successfully for a few mini-trips as well. We are 100% satisfied with unit!

Easy to install, program and use. Simple instructions, easy to follow. Guide comes in several languages, I suspect, all simple as English. Fun to change the language of the voice giving directons. Would recommend to anyone interested in a mid-priced GPS.

This was a great purchase. Small size, I didn't need all the upgraded features in the newer models (like bluetooth, phone, ...)
