My husband downloaded the Garmin update as soon as we received it in the mail, as we were heading out on a trip out of state within the following few days. And to our surprise, it had most of the new roads and places that we wanted to visit on the new update. There were a few small places that were not on it, but it could have been that the companies did not want to be put on the system. It was a great gift to ourselves and I would recommend it (and have) to people who want to keep their Garmins updated for life!

So far I have up-dated my mostly trusty Nuvi 650 twice. I'm not a person who uses a (travel)GPS daily, or that often but at least one long trip of over 1,000 miles and let's say 6 or so short trips. So seemingly being able to keep up on maps over the next 4 years is a good thing. Fact is maps have IMHO cost way too much, also I really miss the "Old" Garmin policy of allowing maps to be used on 2 units. I use "both" a Nuvi and an eTrex now, was able to get pretty decent road maps installed on the eTrex in the "old" days and as odd as it seems the eTrex while often more complicated at times is much easier to set a course "I" want to take while the Nuvi really has it's own opinion. While the update can have some cost saving benefit I think Garmin is a bit short sited in that now while I would like a more up-dated GPS with some handy features the Map Card is married to this one GPS. I know Garmin does not want to just "give away" maps but honest from my point of view if Garmin would give 2, once a year map up-dates (an option to trade one for up-date to the choice of 2 units) I would probably replace/upgrade my GPS unit more often than when one unit that is used occasionally that is locked to Life Time Map Upgrades.

I own three Garmin units. A Nuvi and two etrex handhelds. I LOVE the units no doubt. I don't relish the idea of paying almost 100bucks to keep them "up to date". Think it through 1) Roads don't really change much to warrant paying for new updates. 2) This plan only supports 1 unit, for the life of the unit. I'm pretty sure that three years from now I'll be wanting another GPS with better features, and that one will come with a new mapset. And who knows, Lawrance or DeLorme or Magellan may come up with something better. Not likely but you never know.
Personally I think it would a nice gesture from a customer service standpoint that they would want to keep their customers units up-to-date all the time, not charging us for them.. but that and the extended service contract will tell you they see us a revenue source aren't interested in service. So make them earn their revenue and don't buy this unless you really find a need for it.

I had originally registered by GPS through one account on Garmin and registered this card through another. Garmin Customer Service had them both linked under the same account within 24 hours of my email. Then I had a little trouble getting it to work through Windows 7 RC and eventually had to try it on a Vista machine but it worked smoothly after that. Expect it to take about an hour to 90 mins for the update but it's great.

This is a time intensive effort. It took over 8 hours to download and install. My suggestion would be to set up the download before going to bed and completing it the next day. Although it downloaded and installed with out any problems, I didn't see many changes in the Mid-Atlantic area I live in. The same streets that have been built in the last 3-5 years are still missing. If your map database is more than a couple of years old, it may be helpful. About the best I can say for it is the one time puchase is less expensive in purchasing the map databases each year. Also, only buy this if you have a relatively new unit as the lifetime rights can not be transferred to a new Garmin device if your old one fails.
