 "What A Bust" 2009-09-22
By R. A. Craig
After much shopping around I picked the Garmin Quest 2 for its features and price.

However, what I got was a product that would not work out of the box. Yes it would turn on and off go through the set up and menu options. Have taken this unit on several trips each time with another person trying to get the unit to work with no luck. What did I find wrong!

o Will not navigate and give voice instructions, will only say (satellites lost)

o Will not give accurate location.

o Unit is very slow.

At this point I could go on and on but what would be the point, save your money and get the Zumo 550 or 660 wish I had!

 "Better than Model 1" 2009-07-04

The Quest 11 is much like the Quest 1, except the maps are preloaded into it's much larger memory. If you've ever changed units, or computers, you'll know what a hassle this saves.

On the road, performance is great, as long as you haven't added additional map sets. With all of north America built in, what more do you need?

 "Excellent Purchase" 2009-09-14
By B. T. Corneto
I bought this Garmin as a surprise for my oldest daughter. I already own a c340, and enjoy it immensely; She has a reputation for getting lost in heavy traffic, and has been quietly coveting MY GPS for 2 years.

All reports from her end are glowing - she no longer gets lost driving from Northern California to Central California, rarely misses an offramp or fuel stop, and has one less thing to worry about on long trips to unfamiliar areas.

 "Don't Trust Garmin" 2009-06-13
By Kenneth J. Pennington (Washington, DC)
The current price for the C340 is great --- I paid $800 in Jan. 2006. However, buyers beware: Garmin no longer supports this GPS. I wanted to up-date the maps (June 2009). Customer service told me that 1. I had to buy an up-date made for their new line of GPS for $120 (check the current price of the unit) and 2. the up-date would not fit into the memory of the C340. Garmin no longer provided up-dated maps for the Street Pilot. Customer service cheerfully informed me that the solution would be to buy several SD memory cards to which sectional maps of the USA could be downloaded. As I drove from place to place I could insert a new card into the unit. Aside from the inconvenience and awkwardness of carrying a half dozen cards around, their "solution" (I don't think their engineers went to MIT) means that you cannot plot a trip from Washington, DC to Chicago or anywhere else outside the region where you live. I will never buy another Garmin for my car or for my boat. Like Detroit, Garmin has forgotten an important fact: they have competitors and brand loyalty disappears when the customer is stiffed.

Gilsson Portable Beanbag Mount is a great base to mount your Garmin, Magellan, Mio, TomTom, Mio, Lowrance, Motorola, Apple iPod, iPhone, Blackberry, Cell Phone, MP3 or other portable electronics devices. This beanbag weighs almost 2 pounds, just heavy enough to make sure your electronic device stay at the same place despite of sudden or abrupt maneuvering. We tested it in various sedans and sports cars and found our beanbag mount very stable and works great. This is a must for California and Minnesota drivers where state laws prohibit the use of windshield suction cup mount. Please note this beanbag mount requires the use of a fixed marine, dashboard or suction cup pedestal (such as Gilsson Universal Suction Cup Mount and Universal Holder), so your existing fixed marine, dashboard or suction cup pedestal can be secured to the detachable plate on our beanbag mount base. This is portable mount is also great, because it does not leave any ugly adhesive residues on your dashboard and allows you to hide the GPS from thieves when exiting your vehicle. This beanbag mount is similar to Garmin 010-10908-00 and 010-10306-00 Friction Portable Beanbag Mount. We challenge you to compare: Our beanbag mount is more stable than Garmin and other brands, due to our design/construction, with wider and heavier perimeter. Please note, this item is the portable beanbag mount at the bottom and does not include the suction cup pedestal and the universal GPS holder nor the GPS themselves. Those items are included in the 2nd and 3rd pictures for illustration purposes only.

"Perfect Fit, Stays Put, Did require to use my stick disc." 2008-09-23
By Stefanie (San Diego)
Great. The square shape fits perfectly in the square inlay of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has a firm friction grip and doesn't tip over from the wight of my TomTom One XL (which is a large gps). The only thing with the product is that the suction cup from my TomTom usually has a firm suction to the windshield but did not stick well to this bean bag mount. I used the plastic adhesive disk that came with my TomTom and stuck it to this mount and now the suction cup holds perfectly.

It's hard to believe that your GPS doesn't go flying off the dashboard when using this weighted beanbag mount, but it absolutely doesn't. And it's much easier to use than a suction-cup mount, particularly if you live in an area where you need to remove or hide your GPS.

This GPS pad works great. I use it for a Magellan 4000 GPS and it holds it securely on the dash of my Honda van and also on a Nissan truck. It does not slide around or move even when breaking hard or stopping suddenly. It is easy to set off the dash into the floor when I need to get out and leave the vehicle. I highly recommend this mounting pad if you don't want to have a GPS mounted to your windshield.

 "Garmin GPS Review" 2009-06-27
By M. Leeper
In the GPS realm, in my opinion their are only two companies to consider, they are Lowrance Electronics and Garmin. Upon a close review of available products, the Garmin wins hands down because the 400i Colorado has all of the cadilac features of those of the Lowrance Endura products but at a price that will shock you. Both the Lowrance Endura GPS and Garmin Colorado 400i GPS lines retail around $500 from the factory and their foo foo outlets. Thru this site, you will find you can purchase a Garmin Colorado 400i for $312. and get the product in less than a week. The Garmin has capability for easy downloading of topo maps and even turn by turn directions while driving. This is my third GPS unit over a period of the last 15 years and it is by far the easiest to use. I highly recommend it to all.

"Use The High Capacity Batteries" 2009-03-25
By Loonman (Marblehead, OH)
This unit is basically the same at the Colorado 400t, with a different preloaded map set. In the reviews for the 400t some folks have mentioned that the battery life is a tad short. Others have suggested using high capacity batteries. Both opinions are accurate. I like to use rechargeables and I have tested Duracell NiMH with an 1800 mAh rating, Sony NiMH with a 2500 mAh rating, and Duracell NiMH with a 2650 NiMN. I turned on the receiver, left the back light on the low setting, and checked it periodically, noting when each set failed. Obviously this is an approximation and I won't report the details but there was a significant improvement with each step up in mAh. It was measured in hours, not minutes. I wish that the unit ran longer on a set, that is a fact, but I will just carry spare high capacity batteries. I have not used this in the field but have practiced with it extensively here in my home area. So far it is a great unit, better than my old Magellan. The technology has improved over the years.

"Mostly good device - let down by very poor base maps" 2008-05-11
By Chris Hann (Alameda, CA United States)
First, the pictures above are a collage from all the various base maps. This unit can not show the 3D images and has little detail.

First impressions after one day of use. The screen is good and the back-light makes it very readable at night. Fine without the back-light in the day. The menu wheel/push button/rockers are easy to use, After a few minutes of use. It's just a case of pressing one of the menu buttons and selecting the appropriate item. Normally the wheel is the zoom control.

Calibrating the compass and altimeter was easy. And easy to find. All the setup seemed easy.

The geocaching works well with the built in compass.

I checked the navigation marks on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH. They seemed right, from memory, but the map detail is inadequate to be certain. They certainly don't show the whole picture, they miss shoal detail which is absolutely essential if anyone were going to trust this as their main navigation.

In general the built in map is poor. It has little detail, few roads, few geographical features. Not enough detail in the lakes to know for sure that you are looking at the right islands.

The supplied CD shows even less detail than the preloaded base map. Useless. It's just a questionable tool for managing trips and waypoints, it says. They really should have supplied a better map with a $600 GPS. I expect they hope to rip-off the early adopters and then include the topo maps as a package later.

The geocaching site allows you to transfer direct to the connected GPS, including the descriptions if you paid the subscription to the site. Useful. But it would be a lot more useful if the map was any good.

All in all, good product badly let down by bad maps. If the maps had been any use I'd have given it 4 or 5 stars. But what's the use of a GPS that can't tell you where the there you are at is on a map?

While the GPS is made in Taiwan the case and all else that I ordered with it, all Garmin, are made in China.

After much time researching fishfinders priced below 300 dollars, I decided this one was for me. Amazon had the best price going and this qualified for free shipping making this an easy choice.

The installation and set up was easy and this unit has performed as expected. I fish mostly fresh water lakes in PA and the Garmin 300C has been a great addition to my boat.  "Such tasty meals since using the Garmin 300C" 2009-03-29
By J. Offenbach (N VA)
Ok, so truth be told, the meals haven't been the fish we've caught because we don't eat those, but the meals we've had afterwards have been outstanding. On the other hand, the fish we've caught have provided outstanding exercise and entertainment, thanks to this fishfinder. The fish are returned to the water, unharmed and a little fatter after taking the bait. We use this on Lake Anna and our only complaint is that since using a 4.3" screen GPS in the car, we now want the same size for the boat. We resisted purchasing an electronic fishfinder, feeling that we needed to use our own senses and observations. For those days when nothing seems to bite, we just turn on this Garmin, and watch the pretty colors give us all the info we need to find those populated schools. Using it is as easy as baiting the hook. We strongly recommend using this device, provided you have a valid fishing license, because if you're busted with that fish on your line and you are unlicensed, it makes for a very unhappy day that will allow no post-fishing meal to taste good.

"Small screen but does the job" 2008-03-29
By Dean Bielanowski (Brisbane, Queensland Australia)
The 300C has a small screen compared to many others but it is bright and has high resolution and thousands of colors. The menus are quick and to the point and it has most of the features you will find in higher priced fishfinders. You do need to set it up properly for best results.. i.e. turn up gain, turn on whiteline, and turn OFF fish ID etc. Comes with a fixed mount bracket. I would have preferred the swivel bracket that comes with the FF140, but oh well. Seems to work well and no problems viewing screen even in bright sunlight. Its smaller size makes it an ideal color sounder for small boats with not a lot of room for electronics.

"Poor Customer Service makes Garmin a no-no" 2009-05-05
By Nirvana Boy (VA, USA)
The c580 is an adequate product in terms of GPS capabilities but suffers from the following problems:

(MAJOR Issue)

1) Poor Customer Support (Read - if its breaks - you're on your own)

The suction mount on my GPS stopped working (GPS would fall off) and I promptly called the number given on the manual to get it replaced under warranty. The lady who picked up the phone initially asked me what the problem was and said "ahem...let em transfer you to the auto dept". The auto dept had a pre-recorded message that said "All agents are missing. Pls accept to wait at least *30* minutes" - which is ridiculous. My call was never picked up and I eventually gave up. Needless to say - I'll never buy Garmin again.

Other problems (minor)

2) Bulky Design: This is a older generation of GPS. Look for other families (i.e. not c500 series) if you would like a sleek/lightweight device.

3)Slow Startup: Often takes > 1 minute. During cloudy days - can take longer.

 "Big disappointment" 2009-03-25
By Ozgard (Freehold, New Jersey USA)
First off this is my 3rd Garmin GPS. I purchased a C340 for myself and my girlfriend and then after reading some of the positive reviews for the C580 I decided to purchase it and give my C340 to my daughter. What a mistake that was. I can't really knock the unit while it works. But after 6 months of usage my original unit decided to die. I tried to power it on and it was just dead. Now comes the part that I dreaded and that was to contact the Garmin support. I called around 4pm one day and was given an estimated wait time of 30 minutes which turned out to be 60+. Ok so not everyone can estimate. I got a guy who obviously was having a bad day and proceeded to describe my problem. I was then asked to do several tasks that I had already tried a number of times. With the same result. He then gave me a RMA and asked me to return my "new" unit for repair. I received the replacement "Factory Refurbished" unit about a week after and wasn't too keen on it being a refurb but gave it a chance. The GPS worked fine but when I tried to get the bluetooth function working it would display "Enabling Bluetooth" then die. I would then have to power down the unit to get out of the screen. I called the Garmin support line again and waited about 40 minutes for a tech. He then asked for my email and sent me a few things to try and ways to reset the device. I downloaded several versions of the software for bluetooth and all of them failed. A version of the bluetooth firmware actually caused the unit to digress even further. I contacted Support again and he gave me a RMA and asked me to send the unit back....again.

I got another "Factory Refurbished" unit sent to me about a week and a half later. This time it was dead out of the box. I actually started laughing. The Garmin product support was worse than anything I had ever dealt with and that goes for Microsoft or even Verizon cause when you get those clowns they actually help you. It took me close to an hour to get another real person on the phone. This time Katy was the rep. I explained all that had happened and that I was ready to take all of my Garmin products and run them over with my truck(I also have a handheld Garmin Etrex Vista). She asked me to do another reset of the unit and when nothing happened she told me to hold on and talked to her supervisor. When she go back on she asked me to send the unit back to Garmin and that they were going to send me a "New" Garmin Nuvi 780 as a replacement for the C580 and for my going through hell over the past 6 weeks. Its 3/25/09 and I have to send back the unit, which they're paying for this time, by the way. I also have to have them transfer a "Lifetime Map" Update License I purchased for the C580. That should be fun ya think? I'll keep you posted.

 "Good GPS ... But..." 2009-05-31
By Donald E. Thomas (Bend, Oregon)
Recently bought the Oregon 200. It is super fast at acquiring and seldom drops out.

Installed base map is chintzy and out dated. 10 years ago my city was bypassed by the major highway US 97. Didn't happen according to Garmin! It still shows US 97 running through the middle of town.

Trekking through the forest or riding my quad is great! Seems to be extremely accurate and the cookie crumb trail is easy to see.

I conclude, great for trekking, poor for automobiles. I just ordered the expensive topo map chip. If it isn't more up to date then the base map I'll have to send it back.

"Good GPS receiver with longer battery life than expected" 2009-03-06
By C. Chiu
I just had Oregon 200 for a few days and decided to perform an indoor battery life test to see how this receiver holds up on battery life compared to its siblings, Colorado 300. With WASS off, Battery Save off, backlit off and auto track mode on, it actually remained on for 17.5 hours with a pair of Sony CycleEnergy 2000 mAh (NiMH) batteries. Garmin claims 16 hours for this receiver. In comparison, Colorado 300 can only hold for 10-11 hours (less than 15 hours claimed by Garmin) in the same test. This is way beyond my expectation, particularly after my disappointing experience with Colorado's poor battery life.

The receiver is also very accurate and acquires signal fast. It took about 3 minutes for the 1st useful sat. acquisiton (cold start) and under 10 seconds to have good lock (warm start) afterwards. My test was done indoors and Oregon had lock on more than 7 sats all the time with 15 - 40 feet of accuracy.

As this is the cheapest model in the Oregon family, some features are also stripped off.

1. Only comes with 24 MB of internal memory. Micro SD expansion is supported though.

2. No audio beep (even for battery low warning).

3. The built-in base map has no DEM so no shaded relief on this map. Oregon 200 does support shaded relief for maps with DEM (for example, US TOPO 2008).

4. No altimeter, barometer and compass.

5. No wireless transfer capability to share information with other receivers.

6. No support for HRM and bike candence.

7. Only lanyard included (no carabiner).

Overall, I like this unit so far for its built quality, accurate positioning and long battery life. Too bad Garmin has stripped off several good features (probably contributes to better battery life performance). To users who don't need those features, this is a great buy if the price is right.
