"Great Unit (DONT download 2010 mappack!)" 2009-08-31
By B. Callahan (Los Angeles, CA.)
All the positive reviews for this are absolutely true. The 255W is a great entry level unit at a great price. The POI's are great and the option to set your favorites is a nice (albeit now standard) extra. So let me cut to the chase, i didn't see any mention of this problem on Amazon reviews so i went ahead and bought it. The unit would NOT let me take highways, so i thought it had something to do with my settings...nope. I thought maybe it WAS actually taking me on more efficient routes by avoiding the highways...nope. Often it would staple an extra 5-10 miles or 10-30 minutes on my moderately sized trips. I then began to think i had bought a lousy gps with terrible mapping. I then went online and tried keywords like "nuvie only uses backroads". I found a very common problem that had to do with the new map pack that came preset on the unit as a refurbished one. All i had to do was reset the unit to the factory default which is only a year or two out of date (no reset button, see google for tips on reset). So it's no real problem unless your visiting very new areas or going to new houses. Unfortunately i did this after i had wasted my 1 free map upgrade that came with it and i just reinstalled the same map pack that came on the unit. As Garmin doesnt mention this anywhere (i did NOT contact customer service however) theres no reason to believe they will be fixing this somewhat major mapping problem with there new maps, so it looks like your stuck with maps a bit out of date. Once you do this however the unit works flawlessly and takes you the best route on or off highways. Don't try and fix the problem by using your free map upgrade, just wait until they release 2011 in 2010 and till then settle for 2009. This is likely the best unit out there for the money and the features, so other than this wee issue i highly recommend it.

 "Garmin Nuvi 255W" 2009-08-30
By Linda M. Rogge (Missouri, United States)
This is a great little GPS. It is well suited for rural areas, having greater detail in rural areas. It does not have as great detail in cities, but if you live in a rural area this is perfect. I also have a Garmin Nuvi 675 and it has greater city detail. We love both of them. Garmin was also wonderful in giving a one year guarantee for any Garmin purchased from Amazon.

 "Great Portable Navigator" 2009-08-30
By K. Dewell (Meade, KS)
I purchased this unit after looking at a similar nuvi that my brother-in-law recieved new as a gift. He was very happy with his so I debated about buying a brand new unit or taking a chance on a refurbished unit.

After reading some of the other reviews on Amazon about buyers experiences with their re-furbished units, and the fact that it carries the full Garmin factory warranty I decided to go ahead and save a few bucks and buy the re-furbished unit instead.

I received it in just a few days from Amazon and it looked brand new. It included the DC charger for my automobiles, the mounting bracket for the windshield/dash and a "Quick Start" guide. I was able to successfully download all the latest firmware and map upgrades (free) from Garmin and used it the following week on our family vacation. It has performed great with no problems or glitches so far. It has a lot of great features for a unit with this price tag. I could have spent more $'s to get more "Bells and Whistles" but for the amount of traveling we do (occasional) this Garmin is perfect.

I would recommend this Navigator to anyone who wants a good entry level GPS to get around town or cross country.

 "nuvi 255W" 2009-08-29
By John T. Leach (Gurley, AL)
I bought the friction mount and car charger cord accessories, but the unit came with a car charger and a window mount. It was unclear what would come with the unit, so now I have a set of spares, I guess. I could have saved the 40 bucks!

Packaging and documentation was good, for a refurb. Unit works well and came with one free map download upgrade. I have used it on several business trips and was impressed on a trip to a National Forest. I input GPS points for a hidden cave feature. The Nuvi 255W took me staight to the cave. Not a Topo, but still adequate to find it. Battery life was good.

 "Meets minimum standards only" 2009-08-14
By Jamieson Greer (Wichita, KS)
I should note from the outset that the 255W is the first GPS navigational system I have owned, and perhpas my expectations were too high. Furthermore, the primary reason I purchased a Garmin was for navigating using the much-touted Points of Interest function. I know how to get around town and how to get from town to town on highways; what I do not know, however, is how to get to certain points of interest in an unfamiliar place. On a recent vacation to Colorado Springs, the Garmin was only correct with its points of interest about 50% of the time. Now, it navigates correctly to a manually-entered address (generally), but the Points of Interest function frequently has incorrect pre-set addresses for churches, attractions, monuments, etc. This Garmin was brand new and had 2009 maps and data on it...and much of it was completely off. In one instance, the Garmin was off by about ten miles-a big deal in a mountainous city with bad traffic. This kind of thing happened about 50% of the time.

In my mind, any navigational system can map its way to a manually-entered address. This is the bare minimum expectation for a GPS unit. The Garmin can do that, mostly, but it is completely unreliable for the Points of Interest function, which is one of the most valuable (potentially) and attractive features. Instead of helping me find places, it actually wasted my time and sent me off on dirt roads and roads that did not exist. Poor implementation of a great idea.

Another problem is that it doesn't quite act like a map...it should have the names of streets written down on the display roads as you pass them. It can make it hard to tell where you are prior to arriving at the next turn.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but this unit barely met the minimum. Don't waste your money on this one; just but the cheapest unit available because it will probably meet the same goal of finding a manually-entered address. The Points of Interest function is simply unreliable, and in my opinion, that is one of the most important functions of a GPS.

"Knows the best way to get you there" 2009-08-13
By S. Wells
Have been playing with the 255W for about a month now. Set it to navigate to an address we visit frequently in a near-by city and even though there are several ways to get there, it took the route we usually take, not the shortest, maybe not the best road, but what we consider to be the best route there. The voice prompts give you plenty of warning before your turn and there is no problem understanding the street names. I bought a $3.00 AC/DC converter from Big Lots so I don't have to worry about getting to computer to charge the unit if there is no computer around. Very happy with the unit and the price from Amazon.
