 "Fantastic product!" 2009-08-11
By P. M. Secor (East Greenbuh, NY)
I did a bit of research before buying the nuvi 260W. It's so simple to use - just plug in and go. I used it the first time for a 250 mile trip. Directions were clear, concise, accurate and repeated several times before I need to make a turn. It gives me confidence when I travel. All I have to do is put the address and go and don't have to be the least bit concerned that I'll get lost.

"Garmin 260 not up to the task" 2009-08-10
By Carl Carlson
I've been using a Garmin Nuvi 260W for over a year and I do a lot of traveling. It works OK about 75% of the time, but the 25% takes me off route and to the wrong locations. And the dealbreaker for me is the long long long waits for customer service. I don't have time to wait 30 minutes to talk with someone. I'm now in the market for another brand.

 "Almost perfect" 2009-08-09
By JC's mom (Athens, OH United States)
I recently purchased the Garmin nuvi 260W for a trip to Newark, New Jersey and then on to Massachusetts. Since I was deviating from my normal route and had to go into the city rather than around it, I figured it was a good excuse to buy a GPS.

Overall I was pleased with the product. The turn-by-turn directions were perfect and the countdown by tenths of a mile to feet was helpful. However, my husband found "Samantha's" voice totally annoying.

The one downfall I had with the product (and this could be chalked up to user error) was that our trip from NJ to MA was via the George Washington Bridge (thru Manhattan)!! What a harrowing ordeal - I was ready to toss the GPS over the bridge by the time we got through there!

The reason I suggest it might be user error is that I would like this product to be more interactive. I have not been able to figure out how to put in just a city or a specific point without having to have an actual address. An ideal addition - and this may be available on other Garmin GPS units - would be to click and point where you want to go without having to use VIA points. (Sort of like the revised Mapquest allows). That way I could have gone on the Garden State Parkway over the Tappan Zee Bridge, even if it may have taken longer.

The only other issues I had with it was that it seemed to lose the satellite signal rather frequently and a few times it suddendly showed we were on a secondary road even though we had been on the same interstate highway for miles and miles and should continue to do so.

I'll continue to use it, but will keep my Rand McNally road atlas nearby :)

 "Great GPS for price" 2009-08-08
By Dianne M. Langhans (Connecticut)
Great GPS for the price. If i had to do over - I would purchase the 255 with lifetime traffic. Other than that, this is a fantastic GPS. It has never made an error, gives very clear directions, and the maps are easy to follow. I have used Tom Tom and Magellan's in the past. This GPS is much better, a great product. I gave it 4 stars because of the lack of traffic information.

 "Love my new GPS" 2009-08-04
By Caitlin R. McDonald (Atlanta, Ga USA)
Having played around with lots of gpses in stores and using some of my friend's I knew I wanted the features that Garmin offered. I love the extra features like text-to-speech, but I wish the voices were more real and less computery. The spell search feature in the points of interest is really slow compared to TomTom. The points of interest are outdated -- It lists restaurants that have been closed for more than 2 years in my area (and I live in metro Atlanta, not some rural area.) It doesn't always take you the most direct way, but it reroutes quickly if you know a faster way, and it remembers that you took a different route. Plus the detour option was great when I got stuck in Atlanta traffic on 85. I also love that I can choose to be a Chipotle burrito or Marley (from the movie Marley and Me) when I drive, however this does not come with a computer cord, I used the one from my Cannon camera, but any mini usb cord will work. The extra voices you can download online do not work with the text to speech, they only say "turn left in 200 ft," which was very disappointing. But don't get me wrong, I love my gps. I'm about to take it to Maine so that I'll be able to know my way around there, and the pedestrian feature will come in very handy in Portland.

"You better read this - Useless traffic information (NY-NJ) 4 life" 2009-08-14
By yoin
You probably one of many that got excited to see a GPS with a free traffic notification for life, well I was too. Last year I bought TomTom One for one of my cars and I was and still very happy with it. After reading the Garmin 265WT specs I decided to purchase one too, and let me say it in three words - Don't buy it. Here is why:

1. The free traffic warring is ABSOLUTLY useless, Yes even in NY-NJ areas. So now when it warns me of traffic I just ignore it. In most cases it is absolutely wrong and misleading. I was driving on one highway 65 MPH while the GPS "is claiming" that I am in a middle of traffic jam with 15 minutes delay. Or seating in back-to-back traffic jam for almost an hour and the GPS claims no traffic delays what so ever. If you use this GPS and always take their advice and switch route then I dare you to ignore it - you will find it more than 50% of the time wrong.

2. The instructions on major intersections (when you really need it) are worst then Tom Tom - in short very confusing.

3. It is hard to switch after getting used to a Human voice (in Tom Tom) to a computerized sound

4. This model is unable to overlay point of interest (gas station or Coffee stores) on the map (again like in Tom Tom)

I am not promoting Tom Tom (maybe there are better vendors) but I used them as a reference point. My overall impression that Garmin have too many versions and is not maintaining or even enhancing the one they sell. So, bad stay bad. So if you are like me who wanted a GPS with free traffic notification and consider this one then my recommendation DON'T pick this one. Once concern that I had that was not an issue at all was the advertising. It is true it is Very easy to ignore, but this is the only positive comment that I experienced with this model.

"Absolute Lemon, on 4th unit! Garmin is the pits!" 2009-08-12
By Philip G. Florio (Goodlettsville, TN)
Bought it in April and now I'm on unit # 4! Garmin's acknowledgment is below.

THESE UNITS consistently loose the voice. When this happens it still navigates but the system starts to hang. Also the navigation will start to hang too if you alter your route. You need to shut off the unit and restart but then it will soon happen again.

The 1st replacement was a refurbished after they promised me a new unit. With the 2nd replacement, just like the first one, I made sure that not only did I have the most recent map but also that I had all the unit updates. On the 3rd replacement that I received yesterday I didn't update it and sure enough the same problems occur.

I have spoken to Garmin by phone about 8 times since May and many e-mails. I just contacted Amazon and someone at Garmin Corporate, I'm waiting to hear back. I'm just amazed that Garmin is still selling this unit, why don't they recall these?

Here is an e-mail from a Garmin support Tech from over two weeks ago:

"Unfortunately, there has been an issue with the latest software update

on these units. Our engineers are working on an update to correct this issue, and

we expect to see this very soon.

Your account is set up so that you will receive an email notification

when the update is available, but you are more than welcome to email me

if you do not hear about this soon."

 "Happy with the product" 2009-08-11
By Paul Kwan (Plano, Texas)
Bought this several weeks ago and took it to a trip in LA.

Managed to find an alternate route quickly due to traffic jam.

I am impressed. The interface is easy to use. Voice is clear.

There are newer models which offer 3D view in intersection.

In my opinion, the voice instruction is more important, because

most of the time, I look ahead, with clear voice instructions,

I hardly need to look at the GPS. I only look at it to check

for miles away from turn, the estimated arrival time ..etc.

There was one time it was not able to locate the satellite, maybe

due to the cloudy morning in LA.

Overall, I think is i a good deal and a good product.

Note that I did not get a chance to use the blue tooth feature.

 "Great solution" 2009-08-15
By Philip Gordon (Chicago, IL)
After having my car broken into because of the telltale marks left by the suction cup mount, I bought the Garmin friction mount. It's been great for me. I've had no problem with it sliding around on the dashboard, even when I've had to slam on the brakes. When I park my car, the mount easily slides under my front seat, leaving no sign that there was a GPS in the car.

Great product! It does the job. Much better than sticking on the glass with suction cups. Highly recommend this to everybody. It would work even if you were in a four wheel drive going off road or on bumpy roads, no problem at all, very stable. It is so much easier to set up also if you removing the GPS from vehicle every night or setting it up in another vehicle. Can be moved closer to your reach anywhere on the dashboard also. Highly recommended for normal driving and it can handle bumps and sudden stops and turns, no problem at all :)

We love this critter! Like a techno bean-bag buddy. Since CA law prohibits the Garmin being stuck on the windshield, this little accessory lets it set right on the dash or even down on top of the cub holder and never scoots around at all. Fantastic purchase that is well worth the $$$! Bravo Garmin.

"You people must have flatter dashboards than mine!" 2009-08-14
By Satch Carlson
Um...well, on the strength of all these reviewers who LOVE the Garmin beanbag, I ordered one with my new 855.

Mistake.

It may work fine for law-abiding citizens, but the slightly sloping dash of my BMW roadster, combined with any abrupt acceleration, sends the darn thing flying! I have had it one day, and have retrieved it at least three times.

I am thinking of returning it to Amazon, if I can get them to take it back without the original packaging; the @#$%! blister pack was enthusiastically destroyed in my efforts to get this thing out of that infernal plastic. Evidently the fiends who used to package CDs have now been employed by Garmin.

Since I am currently on a cross-country trip, I will try to make this thing work, perhaps with gaffer's tape. But that sort of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

I bought this right before a scheduled driving trip to Florida from Indiana.

We had plans of vacationing in Orlando.

Not only did it guide us everywhere we needed to go, but it also guided us to places we wanted to see along the route.

I highly recommend purchasing one if you are looking to buy a GPS.

You won't be sorry!

I read other reviews about this product, and those that gave it a negative review just didn't take the time to play with it first.

"be careful before your order this device" 2009-08-11
By D. Stemmler (Baltimore)
I cannot rate the performance of the Nuvi 760 very well, but I can tell you about Garmin's service.

First of all, documentation is terribly inadequate.

As part of the service, purchasers are entitled to a free map update. That is where the problem started. It takes forever to download the installer. After that, you must download the map file and unzip it. Then you need to transfer this enormous file into your Garmin device. According to the screen message, this could take up to two hours.

Time after time, my transfer failed at 54%. I wrote to tech support. Not much help. I called tech support. This process takes hours. I was transferred to a higher level tech support. Still, no progress. The last techie said to send the device back and get another. Fortunately made the exchange very easy and fast.

Now I had a fresh GPS device. Same problem. Tach support apparently only reads parts of the letter. They ignore important passages. Still not help. FINALLY, I recieved a response from a sympathetic tech support guy. He said that I should try the usb port on the back of machine, not the front. I had already done that days ago. He also said to check the USB chipset. If they did not say "Intel," they may not work with the Nuvi. I checked the chips and they did not mention Intel. I guess that is the problem. The techie wrote that I should try another computer.

Had someone told me this weeks ago, I would have saved a lot of time and money. Why does not tech support share this information?

I am using an HP Pavilion 1730n with AMD Athlon dual core with 2 gigs of ram. A fairly competent machine. So, I will send this Nuvi 760 back.

 "Meets minimum standards only" 2009-08-14
By Jamieson Greer (Wichita, KS)
I should note from the outset that the 255W is the first GPS navigational system I have owned, and perhpas my expectations were too high. Furthermore, the primary reason I purchased a Garmin was for navigating using the much-touted Points of Interest function. I know how to get around town and how to get from town to town on highways; what I do not know, however, is how to get to certain points of interest in an unfamiliar place. On a recent vacation to Colorado Springs, the Garmin was only correct with its points of interest about 50% of the time. Now, it navigates correctly to a manually-entered address (generally), but the Points of Interest function frequently has incorrect pre-set addresses for churches, attractions, monuments, etc. This Garmin was brand new and had 2009 maps and data on it...and much of it was completely off. In one instance, the Garmin was off by about ten miles-a big deal in a mountainous city with bad traffic. This kind of thing happened about 50% of the time.

In my mind, any navigational system can map its way to a manually-entered address. This is the bare minimum expectation for a GPS unit. The Garmin can do that, mostly, but it is completely unreliable for the Points of Interest function, which is one of the most valuable (potentially) and attractive features. Instead of helping me find places, it actually wasted my time and sent me off on dirt roads and roads that did not exist. Poor implementation of a great idea.

Another problem is that it doesn't quite act like a map...it should have the names of streets written down on the display roads as you pass them. It can make it hard to tell where you are prior to arriving at the next turn.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but this unit barely met the minimum. Don't waste your money on this one; just but the cheapest unit available because it will probably meet the same goal of finding a manually-entered address. The Points of Interest function is simply unreliable, and in my opinion, that is one of the most important functions of a GPS.

"Knows the best way to get you there" 2009-08-13
By S. Wells
Have been playing with the 255W for about a month now. Set it to navigate to an address we visit frequently in a near-by city and even though there are several ways to get there, it took the route we usually take, not the shortest, maybe not the best road, but what we consider to be the best route there. The voice prompts give you plenty of warning before your turn and there is no problem understanding the street names. I bought a $3.00 AC/DC converter from Big Lots so I don't have to worry about getting to computer to charge the unit if there is no computer around. Very happy with the unit and the price from Amazon.
