"A new life for my GPS" 2009-08-21
By Ron C. (Florida/ New York--a snow bird)
My Garmin Etrex Vista was great for geocaching but the base map that was provided was next to useless. This card put the whole USA and it's roads into my GPS and improved its function 100%. I have a MacIntosh computer that isn't exactly friendly with Garmin GPS's so this solved the problem by allowing me to by-pass my computer and install the system very easily. Easy to use, accurate and worth the money to get the most out of your compatible GPS Garmin units.

 "warning to Canadians" 2009-06-21
By C. Brown
As usual these Garmin maps do a good job of getting you from place to place but it is not possible to download them from the microSD card to the computer. Also, I found a number of large Canadian retailer locations missing from the database. The Garmin rep could not give a good reason for this other than only so much would fit on the card. I'm sorry they shortchanged Canada.

Map works perfectly in my Garmin 705 and in the Oregon.

Maps are accurate.

Usual Packaged GPS map problem - doesn't always give the most direct route (noticeable especially when you know the best route), but always gets you where you want to go.

Arrived on time and easy to use. I already have City Navigator for the Garmin 60cx and it has a lot more streets than this one has for the Garmin Oregon.

"Maps are fine, but not for 2 GPSrs or if you upgrade your GPSr" 2009-08-09
By M. Voelker (Green Bay, WI USA)
The mapping software is just fine and does everything that one needs it to do. The price point is comparable to other units.

However, the current licensing agreement is shady. You would think when you buy a map, you can use the map. On other GPSrs we have had (Lowrance), we have been able to install the map on up to 6 SD cards.

With CN NT, you can unlock the map for one unit, period. If you have two units, you need to buy a map for the second unit. If you upgrade your GPSr, you are out of luck unless you can get Garmin to relock the first unit and unlock the new one. Bottom line, plan on buying a new map for each GPSr in your purchase price and, of course, without detailed road maps your GPSr base mapes are basically useless for road navigation.

Garmin's license agreement is not explicit on this point. Yes I know that they need to find a way to prevent someone from installing the maps on hundreds of units, but most software vendors have some provision for householding. Even Microsoft gives you a PC and a Laptop install.

 "Good Service, Troublesome Software" 2009-08-06
By John A. Huston (Houston, TX)
Item shipped promtly and arrived quickly.

Had some issues with the software that once installed the program would have an error on start-up and fail. After 3 or 4 Uninstall/Reinstalls it worked great!

Definately reccomend this over the Mini SD card version as this allows you to control the map on your computer and have future rights/access to it.

"Nice features; some serious weaknesses" 2009-08-03
By Denis (Seattle WA USA)
I've been using these maps for about 3 years on a GPSmap 60CSx. Now I won't travel without a GPS. There are some really nice and unexpected features in City Navigator, but also some shortcomings to be aware of.

The "search" function frustrates me every time I use it. MapSource (Garmin's Windows software for mapping) has no wildcard searches. Searching for Highway 34 is not the same as Hwy 34, US 34, 34, E Hwy 34, or Highway 34 N. If the name isn't in their database exactly that way, then your search is not going to find anything.

Routing is quite good with these maps, even down to details (like U-turns where medians prevent lefts). If you miss a turn, it will re-route you within a few seconds.

Note that Garmin products purchased for one GPS unit can NOT be transferred to a new/replacement unit (except by Garmin via warranty replacement). Garmin's anti-piracy "unlock" procedure is archaic and tedious. If you ever upgrade your Garmin, you must buy your maps again. One "unlock code" is assigned to one USB-connected GPS device, by serial number, and cannot be changed.

"Good Product from a reliable merchant" 2009-09-12
By James Scott (Spring City, TN)
I reside in a rural area of the southeast. The Garman 2010 map update gives significantly more detail and is much more reliable than the 2008 version. Although I'm not terribly demanding, it has not failed to locate any POI that I have requested.

 "Great, when it works." 2009-09-12
By Wayne P. Claus
Do yourself a favor and spend a bit more to get the lifetime update.

The one-time update was brand new when I bought it and I wasn't aware of the lifetime deal.

Also, Garmin was working out the bugs to their registration system.

The card was factory sealed, but for some reason would not register. Garmin has great (American) tech support, but you spend forever on hold waiting to reach it.

It took me 3 days of calls and emails to finally get the update to register and work.

I was allowed to upgrade the update to a lifetime subscription for just the difference in cost.

Overall I am satisfied with the product and Amazon delivered it in no time.

"Garmin Map Update and nüvi 200W" 2009-09-02
By Allan Leedy (Portland, OR USA)
The map update is listed as compatible with the nüvi 200 series, but it turns out that the update files are too big for the 200's internal memory. It is possible to do the update, but only by adding an SD card in the 200's slot and loading the bulk of the update onto that instead of the internal memory. There is no documentation or web resource at Garmin that I could find to explain this, and the process for doing it is not entirely self-evident.

 "Garmin map updates - nuMaps 2010" 2009-08-27
By G. N. Grimes
This map update is compatible with the Zumo 550 I use for motorcycle touring. The installation was easy, though it took well over an hour (unattended) to complete. I get these map updates every year, and find them to be worth the price.

The update also installed a new version of MapSource, the desktop application that allows creating routes that can be downloaded to the GPS. It's compatible with the existing data files so you won't lose access to routes you may have already created in prior versions.

An important tip: this will only update *one* Garmin unit, keyed to the unit's serial number. Shortly after installing this map, my Garmin had to be replaced because I accidentally damaged the touchscreen. A quick call to Garmin after I received my replacement unit had them reassign this map update to the new unit's serial number so I could load it into the new GPS. Good service from Garmin!

"Pleasantly surprised with the lifetime Garmin update." 2009-08-31
By Phyllis M. Owenby (MO, USA)
My husband downloaded the Garmin update as soon as we received it in the mail, as we were heading out on a trip out of state within the following few days. And to our surprise, it had most of the new roads and places that we wanted to visit on the new update. There were a few small places that were not on it, but it could have been that the companies did not want to be put on the system. It was a great gift to ourselves and I would recommend it (and have) to people who want to keep their Garmins updated for life!

"Not Bad (cheaper for me) I have Reason to Have Two Units" 2009-08-30
By Dr.Scooter (St.Louis, MO)
So far I have up-dated my mostly trusty Nuvi 650 twice. I'm not a person who uses a (travel)GPS daily, or that often but at least one long trip of over 1,000 miles and let's say 6 or so short trips. So seemingly being able to keep up on maps over the next 4 years is a good thing. Fact is maps have IMHO cost way too much, also I really miss the "Old" Garmin policy of allowing maps to be used on 2 units. I use "both" a Nuvi and an eTrex now, was able to get pretty decent road maps installed on the eTrex in the "old" days and as odd as it seems the eTrex while often more complicated at times is much easier to set a course "I" want to take while the Nuvi really has it's own opinion. While the update can have some cost saving benefit I think Garmin is a bit short sited in that now while I would like a more up-dated GPS with some handy features the Map Card is married to this one GPS. I know Garmin does not want to just "give away" maps but honest from my point of view if Garmin would give 2, once a year map up-dates (an option to trade one for up-date to the choice of 2 units) I would probably replace/upgrade my GPS unit more often than when one unit that is used occasionally that is locked to Life Time Map Upgrades.

 "Not worth the money" 2009-08-29
By Sank (Minnesota USA)
I own three Garmin units. A Nuvi and two etrex handhelds. I LOVE the units no doubt. I don't relish the idea of paying almost 100bucks to keep them "up to date". Think it through 1) Roads don't really change much to warrant paying for new updates. 2) This plan only supports 1 unit, for the life of the unit. I'm pretty sure that three years from now I'll be wanting another GPS with better features, and that one will come with a new mapset. And who knows, Lawrance or DeLorme or Magellan may come up with something better. Not likely but you never know.

Personally I think it would a nice gesture from a customer service standpoint that they would want to keep their customers units up-to-date all the time, not charging us for them.. but that and the extended service contract will tell you they see us a revenue source aren't interested in service. So make them earn their revenue and don't buy this unless you really find a need for it.

 "Great once it works" 2009-08-25
By Angry Brown Guy (Edison, NJ)
I had originally registered by GPS through one account on Garmin and registered this card through another. Garmin Customer Service had them both linked under the same account within 24 hours of my email. Then I had a little trouble getting it to work through Windows 7 RC and eventually had to try it on a Vista machine but it worked smoothly after that. Expect it to take about an hour to 90 mins for the update but it's great.

 "Lifetime Map Updates" 2009-08-23
By George S. (Delmarva, MD. USA)
This is a time intensive effort. It took over 8 hours to download and install. My suggestion would be to set up the download before going to bed and completing it the next day. Although it downloaded and installed with out any problems, I didn't see many changes in the Mid-Atlantic area I live in. The same streets that have been built in the last 3-5 years are still missing. If your map database is more than a couple of years old, it may be helpful. About the best I can say for it is the one time puchase is less expensive in purchasing the map databases each year. Also, only buy this if you have a relatively new unit as the lifetime rights can not be transferred to a new Garmin device if your old one fails.
