Worked great with wonderful definition and visuals--there were even tracks for entering difficult harbors. One thing to note, the marine charts for the Canadian shore of Lake Superior (the chip) are a bit off. The US charts for the GPS are perfect. The Garmin makes navigating so much easier. Would not want to sai without it.

 "Quality Control???" 2009-08-06
By John M. Woods (Orange County, Cali)
I bought the unit NEW from Amazon and received it on Jan 3 2009. The sound didn't work, so after dealing with Garmin's customer service I sent my 12V cord/speaker to Garmin waited three weeks and received a replacement. Still no sound. Garmin then told me to send the unit back to them for replacement. About three weeks after sending the unit to them, I received a replacement, only this one had a loose antenna. The GPS worked fine at first, then it started having trouble finding satellites. Garmin then told me to send the GPS back to them for inspection and sent me a replacement about three weeks later. Now this GPS does not charge. The battery is dead.

All of this within seven months of spending close to $700.00 for a NEW GPS and an additional $30.00 in shipping and insurance.

 "Outstanding product!" 2009-06-19
By Nativescape (Chicago, IL USA)
This is the best Sea to Land to Road GPS I have found and certainly the best GPS I've ever owned (and I've had many). I seamlessly use the 478 on my Sailboat, Motorcycle and Car. The XM Weather feature is outstanding, which I use both on the boat and motorcycle. It is an advanced unit and therefore, will take a novice a bit of experience to work through all the sophisticated functionality vs. some of Garmin's mass market-oriented products like the Zumo or Nuvi, but there is no other device that can do everything that the 378/478 units can do, so it's absolutely worth the extra learning curve.

Garmin's new 640, which is apparently aimed as a new replacement/upgrade for the 478, is a major DOWNGRADE in functionality - so do not be fooled into buying the 640 (XM only with Marine mode, not Automotive mode. Also, the 640 regrettably removed the critically important Tracks Saving/Routing function, which the 478 has). The 478 ROCKS!

"Garmin 478 Versatility Exceeds Expectations" 2009-05-12
By Redfishman (Coastal Louisiana)
I chose the Garmin 478 chartplotter because I needed a portable unit for my truck and bayboat. Navagating though Louisiana coastal marshes with its maize of cuts and islands is quite challenging. Before going on the water, I made navagational waypoints through established canals and bays easily. There is a good variety of icons you can use for specific routes and then use different ones, labeling for fishing spots along the area. You can zoom to a 2' accuracy which shows movement when anchored.

Just a personal preference, I chose not to hard wire the unit on the boat since the battery provides 7-9hrs of charge depending on screen brightness-more than enough time for a day venture. I did buy an extra battery for $21 to provide extra power if needed. You could easily use the charger with the 12v system onboard-but because of water and rain issues-didn't want that extra concern.

The coastal maps show only natural lakes-ponds and canals(bayous).Man made oilfield canals and accesses are not shown .So in some instances, your route will be highlighted through land areas.

Disadvantage: In remote areas of the marsh the unit WILL loose satellite

communication if the WAAS is enabled. In the marsh there is no cover like trees to inhibit the signal.Having it mounted on the console,in my humble opinion should not affect the signal either. I use the WAAS system for vehicle navagation. It's probably better to use the marine system when on the water. That can be changed easily when flipping to the setup menu.( the jury it still out on that issue)

If the unit had some type of touch screen (like the Nuvi's) would help "dragging" new way points for marine navagation. But considering the price -the lack of that feature-"you get what you pay for".

Other features: You can set several tide stations to view -sunrise/sunset data. I don't subscibe to the XM system. I get weather and warnings off my VHF system. On the "automotive side" you get voice prompts and directions like the nuvi's.

Overall: I gave the unit a strong 4 out of 5 considering its cost and wide use. I have used magellan and Lowrance units in the past. Garmin seems to be more user friendly. I'd recommend sitting down before hand and learning the unit before venturing out into the great unknown sipping a cold one and watching another episode of "Lost".

"the best handheld GPS that I know" 2009-05-29
By
This is the best handheld GPS that I know! The battery which is great because it has a safe load for a long time depending on their size. I recommend buying now with the equipment 1 memory card that can be burned to the maps. The size of the display is very good, very large can show many details. I did the crossing of Angra dos Reis to Rio de Janeiro at night and feel much confidence and traffic in the middle of many islands with the orientation of the maps that I loaded in the GPS!

 "I was not impressed." 2008-10-17
By Hoffman
This claims to be "perfect for land or water" in its description, but that is not the case at all. I took this deep-sea diving (I was hunting for monsters), and as soon as I got underwater the unit completely stopped working! I called the customer service, and they said it was "user error". Me and my new monster pets are very upset.

 "Outstanding Garmin product...as usual" 2008-08-01
By B. Bates (Santa Fe, NM USA)
Garmin has to be the best GPS available. It is the only one I buy, and this is my fifth unit. It is fast to aquire satellite data, and will position you within feet of where you are. I would like to have the option to increase the size of the font, but that is not available to the extent I need for motorcycle use. Rugged and reliable, if just a little over price; but then you are paying for the Garmin name. Software was easy to install on my GPS.

"4 Stars for a great GPS unit... 5 Stars if add-ons were standard" 2008-07-17
By S.J. Diggs (Wakefield, MA)
I use my 276C exclusively for boating, and it performs admirably. Once you figure out how to navigate the menu screens, you can take advantage of some very powerful options which you would only expect to see on higher end GPS models. Overall, I am very pleased - setup was a breeze, never a problem with position refresh, battery life is good, data is accurate, signal strength is fantastic in my boating area, and I really like the fact that nearly every screen is customizable.

However, in order to take advantage of the 276C's many IMPORTANT features you should plan on spending (quite) a few more $$$. For starters, the marine base map is garbage for those who boat offshore or cruise the coast. I wasn't expecting much in the marine base map department going into the purchase, but for those that are expecting this, plan to pony up an additional $150 for a (proprietary) data card which gives you the detail you'll need to navigate the waters safely. Also, the absence of a 12v adaptor is a real miss. Given the unit is marketed as "portable", why Garmin opted to not include one is a mystery to me. So, plan on spending another $25 for that. If you plan on using this GPS for boating I would recommend the display cover... another $20.

One of the more powerful feature I plan to utilize in the near future is the sonar function. To enable this feature, you'll need Garmins analog scanner (GSD-21) and a suitable transponder. One other feature I enjoy is the mapsource software that came with the unit. From this, you are able to upload your trips to the computer. From there you can analyze your trip - it even interfaces with google maps to provide a real-life view of your excursion. Pretty cool stuff.

"Great watch for great price" 2009-08-23
By Jacob Johnson (Queen Creek, AZ USA)
I'm training for a Marathon and use this watch on every run (long runs, intervals, etc..). For the price it is a great watch. I love being able to customize the view so I can see my heart rate, my pace, distance, and time all on the same screen without having to switch between. I eventually want to use this watch in an Ironman so my only complaint is that the manual said the battery is only good for up to 10 hours without a recharge. Another complaint I have is that it's not waterproof for swimming. But for a running watch this is great. It's even a good bike watch as it tells your MPH speed and has an add on piece for cadence (which I don't have). However the speedometer is about a 1/4 mile off for every 10 miles I ride on my bike (probably due to turns and swerves on a bike), but it's not off by enough that it bothers me as it is close enough. Also the calorie count is not very accurate, I did a search on the Internet for Calories and this watch and there seems to be a lot written up about how calories are counted and how this watch is off (for example on a 1 hour 20 mile bike ride it showed a 1500 calorie burn). To me these are minor issues and would not stop me from recommending this watch to a friend.

This has revolutionized my running experience. I can't run without it. It keeps track of all of my runs, calories, speed and is very accurate. The heart rate monitor helps me know if I overworked a run. Recommend it for any beginner looking for an incentive to keep running.

 "A good running partner" 2009-08-23
By Kcirtap (North Carolina, USA)
I've had my 305 for 2 years and have found it helpful in tracking workout progress as expected. It is highly customizable for your running or biking workout. I'm glad I have it and the price has come down since my purchase. A few negatives I've noticed:

- It's still a bit bulky on the wrist (but better than prior models I understand)

- I think it reads mileage a bit short. I've run several certified races with it and it seems to time a mile maybe up to 50 ft short

- I agree the pace reading is highly erratic as the graph will show you when you upload to the tracking software

- I don't think the elevation reading works very well either

- I have had a few problems with the physical connection to the dock. It helps to get every last drop of water/sweat off the unit before docking. The tracking software works on my Mac too!

Overall I really like this watch. I'm anxious to see what the next version has to offer.

 "Initial Impressions (from a 201 user)" 2009-08-22
By Amazon Customer
I just received the unit last night (it replaces a 201 which I used for nearly 3 years very happily) and took it out for a quick 3 mile spin, I hope to go for a 14 miler later today as part of my marathon training - so there will be lots of time to properly evaluate the 305

Initial impressions:

The buttons on the sides are exceedingly hard to press.

Software installation didn't get rid of a previous version of TC. I had to do this myself and then re-install the newer version of TC.

There was at least one blatant major typo on one of the larger installation screens (as a software developer myself I get suspicious about overall quality if such sloppy things get through - if I recall correctly they misspelled "Operating" in Operating System)

Coming from the 201 - the unit is very light and comfortable. Locks on to satellites much faster than the 201, and it's nice that the screens can be customized. (Does anyone know what the little icon to the left of the heart is?) I find it odd however, that there is no battery life indicator on the main screen. The main thing right now is how hard the buttons are to press, I hope that gets easier with time.

Haven't used the HR monitor yet.

More later. (4 stars because I haven't had much time to test it yet, I will update this review and my rating)

 "Just What I Needed" 2009-08-22
By A. Millard (Columbus, NC USA)
This little device works great. I live and run in a very wooded area, and I was concerned that the tree cover would impede the GPS. But I have never had a problem, no matter where I run. The only thing that doesn't work great is the elevation measurement, but that is not a big concern for me. The unit's size is not a problem -- it's larger than a wristwatch, sure, but it is no hindrance or distraction. I like the large screen; I have set mine to show the distance run, average pace, elapsed time, and current heart rate all on one screen, and I can read it even though I am very far-sighted. And after the run, I just attach it to my computer using the included USB attachment and software, and I have a very accurate record of the entire run. For me, at least, it was definitely worth the money.
