 "Pre-Loaded Maps are Worthless" 2009-07-21
By Dr. Michael R. Adams (Boston, MA USA)
Let me first start off by saying I love the Oregon series. But I returned my 400i to Amazon after less than a week. I ended up with the 400T and think it's wonderful. The touchscreen interface is much easier to use than my previous eTrex Legend HCX and my 60CSX. Yes, battery life leaves much to be appreciated as the screen at full brightness and use of the compass absolutely kill the battery. But what ruined it for me were the pathetic preloaded maps of inland lakes. Simply put, the maps are awful. Very few lakes here in the New England area have data, and the few that do have incomplete areas of the lake ... areas where most fishermen, like myself, tend to boat and kayak. Even Lake Cochituate in Natick, MA, a popular lake that has 3 large sections, only 1 of which Garmin decided to map, and that section has limited boating since it's the beach area for swimmers.

I find it unprofessional for Garmin to release such a product which is obviously not ready for the serious outdoorsman. The 400i needs to be advertised with a listing of all the lakes that are actually mapped. It's almost deceiving the way it's presented. Now, the 400T has its issues as well ... the topo basemap is only 100K, and there are no 24K maps for the Northeast, but that's a whole other review.

If you plan on using this for the lakes in your area, do yourself a favor and call Garmin first and ask if those lakes are mapped. Even if it's a big one that you've been going to since you were a kid, you might be surprised to find that Garmin has excluded it from the 400i.

"400i is Easy to use Great for Fisherman" 2008-12-29
By A. Lee (SC, USA)
I bought this for my husband for Xmas and we have been using it right out of the box. I showed Lakes, ponds, rivers, and creeks. I've lived in South Carolina for 24 years and there were creeks and ponds I didn't know about. My husband is a Bass Fisherman and he is going to use it for Tournaments. The only thing I would like Garmin to do is make it easier to register the Garmin. I had to download USB drivers and some other software to register and update the Garmin (it doesn't come with a install disc, a registation card, and you can't call Garmin to register only to ask questions). I bought this when Amazon had it for a low $354 (otherwise I probley wouldn't have bought it) So I wait until the price goes down.

The Rino 130 is the most feature-rich unit in the Rino family, with a built-in electronic compass, barometric sensor, weather receiver for seven NOAA weather channels, and 24 MBs of internal memory. This handheld radio has a built-in electronic compass to give a heading while the user is standing still, and a barometric altimeter to provide extremely accurate elevation and pressure information, which will assist users in identifying weather data. The Rino 130 provides two-way radio communication with a transmission range of up to two miles using FRS channels and up to five miles with GMRS. The integration of two-way radio and GPS enables users to transmit their position with a simple button press, allowing others to navigate to their position. The Rino 130 also has a polling feature, which allows a user to manually request GPS location information from other Rino units. The Rino 130 offers a detailed basemap of North and South America, displaying cities, highways, railways, rivers and lakes, and borders. And because of the unit’s robust internal memory, it can store map data from a variety of Garmin MapSource CD products, including U.S. Topo 24K, U.S. Topo, Recreational Lakes, BlueChart, and MetroGuide.

 "NOT Waterproof" 2009-07-23
By Mark Pinzon (Rowayton, CT)
Used the unit once! I have 3 Garmin Products, two Vehicle GPS and one Personal Wrist Watch GPS, Have always been happy with the company until now. Purchased the unit and went out Kayaking once with it, conditions were windy to calm with some splashing water. When I went to change the batteries I discovered that Water got into the battery compartment, shocked because the unit is advertised as waterproof but should not be too shocked after seeing the thin seal on the compartment. Called Garmin expecting excellent support, as I said I own multiple Garmin Products and have been pleased until now. I was told by the Tech support people that although it is rated waterproof it is only is it is "standing" water and up to 1 meter. Apparently splashing water can be forced into the back and damage the unit. IT WAS NOT COVERED by warranty and was told to get a return from the retailer. Extremely dissatisfied customer and will think twice when buying another Garmin product.

I have had this for a year now and it works great. Matches ACU color. I would buy the 430 or 420 with the color screen but I don't need the color screen. I haven't downloaded any new base maps but I intend to do so at some point before a deployment. If you want a cheap GPS to give you MGRS grids, purchase the Foretrex not Forerunner. The Forerunner is only for lon/lat. So unless you are a flyboy and you want a cheaper, smaller unit get the Garmin Foretrex. I would like to get another unit that has an MMC slot, currently the only ones that have that are the E-Trex and some other models.

Overall it is a great item.

 "Well designed, mission-ready unit" 2006-08-01
By F. Anderson (Metro Detroit, Michigan)
After reading all of the online reviews here on Amazon, and on the manufacturer's web site, I decided to purchase the units and judge for myself. I had been planning a trip to the Michigan sand dunes, and thought it would be nice for safety to have at least two units in case any member of my family got lost, or seperated during the trip.

Within the first few hours of using the units, we learned a few of it's idiosyncrocies. One thing you have to know is that the units must have time to "locate" at least 4 satellites before it will accurately report location info. The time required can vary, depending on the environment. Terrain with buildings, or other barriers, natural or otherwise, will increase the time required for the unit to "lock-in" satellites.

Once the unit's find the satellites needed for self-navigation, the unit works without much intervention. My 14 year-old son was able to learn how to use the tracking-navigation feature within a couple of hours of tickering with the unit.

Out in the field, my 14 year-old son made a miscalculation, and ended up in a chest-high pond of water, with him, his ATV, and the Garmin Rino 130 fully submerged for about 3 minutes. After the initial panic of making sure he was ok, and removing the water-logged ATV from the water, we immediately checked the Rino 130, and it was still working great. However, the external PTT microphone that is sold as an accessory did not survive the plunge.

The unit works so well, and is so simple to use, it can seem almost "toy-like" until you realize how much data it keeps track of at one time. Once I initiated the "tracking" feature for the other two units I purchased, it maintained location data for the duration of the trip, without any further manipulation. I was actually stunned by the simplicity of locating any of the units, even standing still. Although the compass feature works better when moving, it is still very accurate in a fixed location under the right conditions.

Overall, I would recommend this unit for anyone needing basic communication and GPS capability. The Radio was a bit under-powered in my opinion, but they were suitable for short distances in wooded areas. Near some metro areas, RF interference is definitely a problem, but that's no fault of the unit. Many of the people who have complained about this unit seem to either have received a defective unit, or don't like to read manuals.

 "Garmin Dash Mount" 2009-01-06
By R. L. Caswell (California)
I've used Garmin mounts before, with older automotive GPS units. In general, they work well and their adhesive mounting is about as good as is possible. With an older, heavier, Streetpilot 3, in a sports car where rocking vibration is fairly high, the mount fails after a year or so of service. I have not had a mount failure in any other car, even with the heavy Streetpilot 3.

I am reasonably confident that, even in the sports car, the mount will not fail with the much lighter Nuvi.

"Great mount! Much better than the windshield mount. " 2008-09-27
By Brian Cho (East Setauket, NY)
My Nuvi 350 came with a windshield mount. After about a month on the windshield, I had to take it off to move it to another car. When I went to pull it off, pieces of rubber ripped off and was stuck onto the windshield! The suction power obviously was never the same again after that. The GPS+mount would fly off when I accelarted too fast and I was worried that it would fly out the window! It was really a terrible mount.

I had been delaying purchasing a new mount, mostly out of laziness, but I decided to give this dash mount a try. When I received the mount, I first tried using the temporary sticker which is suppose leave minimal residue on the dash if you ever wanted to remove it. I really care about how my car looks so I decided to try this route first. However, the adhesive strength on the temporary sticker was definitely not enough to secure the GPS into place.

So the next day I tried the permanent sticker and that thing is stuck to my dash as if I used superglue. I really love how it looks and functions. You can quickly detach the arm and GPS from the base, allowing you to keep a lower profile when parked in public places.

If you are unhappy with the windshield mount and you don't mind having a permanent sticker going on your dash, I would definitely recommend this product.

I had to buy a new NUVI mount as my original one broke after 6 months of infrequent use. The description of this mount made me think it was removable, but turns out you have to stick an adhesive on your dash. The package comes with two adhesives (one permanent, the other "removable")but the instructions don't specify which is which, so if you make the 50/50 mistake of putting the permanent adhesive on, you'll have a difficult time removing it. I returned the product to Amazon.

This package is not applicable to the Nuvi 660 unit.

The ball mount & sticky pads are o.k. but the interface connector is not compatible with the Nuvi 660. The interface does not match the 660 mounting features and the power connector doesn't match the cable that is shipped with the 660.

The concept of being able to easily move the unit from one vehicle to the next is not as convenient as you would expect.

The Rino 120 allows you, at an affordable price to know where you are in the world, where your buddies are as well and to have on-going conversation. The unit performs as advertised. I used the Rino on a game bird hunt in rugged eastern Oregon. Our party was at times a couple miles apart and separated by some deep ravines and high ridges. Sound transmission was great. Battery life seems good. The only thing to remember is to check in at intervals so that your location will continue to update on the map. The perfect tool to stay in contact and stay safe.

Why should you buy this one? The price is right!

You have the GPS with the ability to send your location to other GPS units and a radio to talk to other walkie talkies on 22 communication channels. The good news is I already have 4 other walkie talkies that mate with this GPS. I love it for GEOCACHING and my 7 year old grandson can use it.

There are Icons for special places in the GPS marking menu. This is my second Garmin Rino; the other is a Rino 130. The only draw back is the monochrome display can be difficult in low level light for us seasoned citizens. You kids will have no problem; I'll get my glasses.

 "Great Unit, But..." 2009-09-29
By Book Doc (NH, USA)
NO PHONE CALLS THROUGH STEREO!

I am happy with the Garmin, but one of the reasons I selected this unit was because in the Amazon product description the unit is described as being able to broadcast traffic alerts AND CELL PHONE CALLS through the car's FM radio. This was an enormous attraction to me as I drive a convertible, & hand-free speakers just don't cut it with the top down. Well, the description is wrong (or WAS, if Amazon has corrected it.) The unit will NOT do this. It IS Bluetooth, and functions as a hands-free set, but with all the caveats normally associated with such sets. Bummer.

I decided to keep the unit anyway, however, because otherwise it is excellent. The modern features, such as showing the speed limit of the road you're on, as well as your current speed, (among other features) make this unit very useful & easy to use. I love it. But... back to the old Bluetooth earbud.

"expensive for what it offers" 2009-09-26
By H. Dudley (AZ, USA)
Garmin is known for it's versatile GPSs. However, their incessant referral to it's Bluetooth technology needs a little explanation. It is only viable to a limited number of cellphones with Bluetooth. If this option is important, I highly advise that you first check that your phone is compatible with this device.

I found my Garmin very easy to use. I had an awful time downloading the update until someone from Garmin told me to try using a different downloader (Mozilla Foxfire). I wish that information had been provided right in the beginning.

 "Very nice, but overpriced" 2009-08-08
By C. Pak (Greenville)
This is a very nice basic all around PND, however I think the current price is a little too high if you consider you can get a nuvi 205 or 250 for more than half this price. If you compare the 1260T to the 1250 though, it' the better deal out of the two. For the small price difference (about $40 at time of review) you get a traffic receiver (which costs more than $50) and Bluetooth.

Here are some observations:

Pros:

- Very fast map update speed, as fast as my nuvi 755.

- Bluetooth worked very well paring and copying contacts. The speaker could use some improvement but callers said they could hear me just fine.

- Nice smaller size. The thickness is 0.2 in thinner than normal nuvis and a bit more than my nuvi 350. The bezel also appears to be a bit smaller, adding to the perception of small size. If you've owned an older 3.5 in nuvi, you can definitely see and feel a size difference.

- User interface has been updated and sped up. A new, smoother and cleaner font is used throughout and contributes to a more "refined" feel for the interface. Menus are fast and you never feel like the unit is sluggish or lagging (like in my trusty nuvi 350).

- The included traffic receiver worked well and picked up traffic info very fast. I have never found these traffic data services to be very reliable but included here because that's not Garmin's fault. Note, the "free" traffic shows pop-up advertisements balloons on your map display during idle times (supposedly).

Cons:

- The mounting cradle is a two-step/two-handed affair, unplug the mini-USB then unmount from the two point cradle. The older, better quality cradle is literally one click grab and go from a nice powered cradle. Don't know why they removed that (cost savings?).

- A common complaint: less detail shown on maps. The newer nuvi's show fewer street names at the same zoom level as the older units. The argument being this reduces clutter. I'm not happy with it, but it's not a deal breaker. Garmin has added alot of other information to the map display and I can understand they don't want to overwhelm the user with text.

-Some features that are missing from the newer widescreen versions: Lane Assist, Lane Guidance, customizable vertical data fields (all removed due to smaller screen).

- When comparing the map display to a nuvi 755, I noticed the 1260 rendered the streets with less smoothing, showing more "jaggies" on curved roads. This could be how they sped up the map display.

- Mine came with 2010.10 maps, the new 2010.20 maps are out. You only get one free update after purchase, so I think it should come preloaded with 2010.20 maps so you have the opportunity to get the next update free. Newer units in the next few weeks should ship with .20 maps.

- I wish they would bring back the compass N arrow on the map display.

No surprises with this unit. It is quality-built and includes the latest version of the Garmin software. I previously had a 350, so the software is an evolutionary improvement.

However, I am very surprised by the cheapness displayed by Garmin in that they do not include a carrying case or even an AC wall charger! The only charger included is a car charger. I had to buy my own carrying case and charger, so the real cost of this unit was +$30.

I "upgraded" to this 545s unit from the gpsmap 478.. Simply because the connection on the back of the 478 were not up to the task of saltwater spray for both the XM antenna and power cord... I wish i hadn't. Yes, it's a bigger screen, BUT.. you have to push many more buttons to get to where you want to be on the machine. There is not a simple waypoint entry.. while cruising on a vessel. You have to make multiple entries to save it. The worst loss is of the NOAA forecasts that were on the 478. Now all you get is a little graphical icon and current conditions.. Come on Garmin... make this a useful piece of equipment instead of a boat anchor.

"Love it. They update often" 2009-01-28
By Bruce Bailey (Radford, VA)
I have had this for almost 2 years. I have taken my boat to the bahamas twice. It works perfectly. I added a vision card, satelite weather and a Fuel flow sensor. The satelite weather is excellent but pricey through xm at $50 a month. But there are two lower tiers. They also let you cancel off season. You will need a $300 antenna for that. The sonar works great except for high speeds but that is an issue with my boat hull design I believe. The Fuel flow sensor was a huge pain to wire but it is nice to have. I also have it hooked to my Marine radio which will transmit and receive coordinates. Great visiblity in sunlight. No complaints. Xm radio controls from unit with weather. A visoin card is key for upper level funtions and routing. Great price for this.

"A few annoyances, but a great product!" 2008-05-20
By Mike Blaszczak (Mercer Island, WA, USA)
The unit is easy to install, and looks great. It works very well, too. The display is very crisp and easy to see in bright sunshine. It doesn't have much glare, and the unit is easy to use. It's small and lightweight.

It takes a long time to acquire a signal. I have to remember to turn it on at least a couple of minutes before we shove off.

The user interface is disappointing. The unit has a great information display, including the time of day, battery voltage and heading--plus a bunch of user selectable numbers displayed in big numbers that you can see from the other side of your boat. There's also the map and sounding charts. But switching from one to the other requires four or five button presses. This is unconscionable--switching between each should take a single key press.

The will draw a straight line to navigate to a particular point unless the user manually adds turns to avoid land. In the complex Puget Sound, it's time-consuming to enter enough turns manually (and accurately!) to get a sensible course. Garmin requires that you buy an extra map chip in order to get a guided map.

The array of available transducers and sensors is great--but it's also quite confusing. Finding information about which sensor is best for me and my boat required a call to Garmin's customer support. With the sensor I chose, though, the sonar and depth finding is just about perfect.

I've used Garmin products for more than 15 years--since I bought my a hand-held 12XL to take hiking. The products are bullet-proof, and this product is no exception. I wish these problems were fixed, but it's really great product just the same.

"Loading Maps on a Nuvi 360 and misc tricks....." 2009-09-30

Loading Maps on a Nuvi 360 and misc tricks.....

The software install itself was not too bad with my version, CN Europe NT 2010.10. I updated this software on the Garmin site with the unit plugged into the computer as well. BUT, the adding maps feature was dinosaur age, IMHO.

Here is yet another install guide with a few tricks:

If you want all of Europe, plug card reader with a 2 GB SD card into the computer. You need the external card to accommodate all of the Europe maps, as the internal memory does not have the space. Launch Mapsource.

With the Europe map set to least magnification (1000 miles), select the map select icon, and then click just inside the map square. This will allow you to select all of Europe in one swoop. Move the cursor around and you will see all the regions light up. No more selecting and adding one by one ! Mapsource told me that there were 264 maps total.

Next, choose "Transfer" then, "send to device". Walk away for a half hour or so and it should be mostly loaded depending on your computer............... You choose the SD card removable drive when prompted to store all the maps.......

To double check that the data has been transferred, check the contents of the SD card under "my computer". You should see a gmapsupp.img file that is 1.6 GB or so. Then put your SD card into your Nuvi, and reboot it. To double check that the new maps are being read off the SD card, go to: tools>map>map info. You should see CN Europe in there.......................Then check to see if you can navigate to some country........

If you do not want all of Europe, then plug your Nuvi into the computer and select the countries you want one by one or using the technique above. Hopefully, there will be enough internal memory to accommodate your selections. If not, delete the new gmapsupp.img file that represents the partial list of maps, so the unit does not get confused when you plug in the maps loaded on the SD card. Then buy a 2 GB memory card and do the aforementioned install.

To free up some space for maps in the internal memory, you plug your Nuvi into the computer and open up the Nuvi icon. In there you can find folders with jpeg images that you can delete and voices in languages that you can delete. I personally replaced the Garmin images with my own images. To review the images you loaded, this feature can be selected under tools>display>splash screen. It will give you a choice of images from SD card or from internal memory.......you can show people pictures of your family or whatever, or you can make your boot screen a selected picture.............

I hope this helps fellow Nuvi owners!

"Works well, but be careful you get what you need" 2009-09-05
By MikeMikeWhiskey (Marlton NJ USA)
I purchased these maps for a driving trip through Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy. On the whole the maps themselves were excellent, finding the smallest roads, alleys etc. I purchased the CD as opposed to the SD card after reading reviews stating the card cannot be updated and some route planning software had to be purchased separately that was on the CD.

Here's where I got into trouble, As many reviewers stated assembling and downloading the regions to your unit is not very intuitive and pretty cumbersome (I'm trying not to stay stupid). Being that I had an extra 1 gig SD card around I only wanted to download the portions of Europe I needed. I made a route for my trip and made waypoints (hotels airports, sites I wanted to see etc) I zoomed in on the area of Europe for my trip. I highlighted all the oddly shaped regions that crossed borders, included portions of the Mediterranean etc, and downloaded them to my GPS. I cross checked the whole thing once downloaded. I simulated take me from point A to point B on my trip. GPS said calculating and let's go. Wonderful I thought that wasn't bad at all.

Upon arrival all worked well until I entered Zurich and Milan. As I approached, detail would start to disappear, and then side roads, then the representation of the car on the GPS would be in a void next to the one or two roads still on the screen that didn't seem to really exist. The GPS would keep repeating "Drive to highlighted route". This happened to me both times we were in Zurich and Milan. We finally had to resort to good old maps. After leaving the area the GPS would slowly regain its brain.

Back in the US I called Garmin tech support. They told me that they had never heard of anything like it and offered to replace my unit. After much trial and error, back home I figured it out. When I selected the regions I was going to, my zoom level on the map was to low and the tiny tiny city regions of Zurich and Milan could not be seen and I could not tell they were not highlighted. They appeared to be part of the much bigger geographical regions surrounding them.

I know technically this was my doing, but who would have thought I need to select the black dots that were Zurich and Milan. With all this being said, My GPS never gave me an error stating part of my route was missing I was driving through, during creation or during the actual driving. It just said calculating 100 % and GO. No errors, it just started to loose its mind like the HAL9000 computer when Dave Poole started pulling out the memory ( Daisy Daisy how does your garden grooooooowwwwwwww.........)

Moral of story buy a 2 gig card and download the whole thing or zoom way in and be very careful. I'm sure there are still a few, always in a bad temper European drivers, thinking, "What was that idiot in that Peugeot doing" Thank You for that Garmin.

"Garmin western europe maps helped sometimes" 2009-08-14

I used the latest Garmin City Navigator for Europe NT. There were pockets of data not availible in eastern France, Luxemburg and Germany around Vianden to St Goar. Otherwise, it helped us navigate sufficiently. JB

"Better than old school maps but putzy" 2009-07-10
By D. Barry
I purchased Garmin City Navigator Europe NT for a recent trip to the UK and France. It was as all Garmin disks somewhat a pain to load and unlock. Once on my computer, it was another project to transfer data to my GPS. This software has so many layers (a strength AND weakness) that loads of useless information can make a tiny GPS screen overwhelmed by "Points of Interest" of all kinds. I must have inadvertently checked (or it was defaulted) routing to avoid toll roads, the fastest way to get around in France. This left us on some wild backroad adventuring thru the countryside of Normandy. All in all, travelling in a country where ones grasp of the native language is limited (me-French), it was an invaluable tool.

 "difficult to install" 2009-07-09
By B. E. Carlson (Virginia USA)
The CN Europe NT maps for Europe are a surprisingly difficult installation. The documentation is confusing and poorly written. The process requires that you find and enter a number of codes (product code, serial number, unlock code, unit code, etc.) without suggesting where you might find them or what they might look like. All this is required so that you can then struggle with unfamiliar software for uploading sections of maps.

I expected this to be like the relatively hassle-free North American map update. That one is straightforward and uploads the entire NA map in one action. Of course, until I get to Europe, there is no way to tell if I have uploaded the maps I need and whether the auto-routing feature will work.

This is not an Amazon problem, it is Garmin's "not user friendly" design that is at fault.
