The mount installed and works great. It has been on the bike for around 200 miles and so far no problems. The only recommendation would be a metal handlebar clamp for greater durability.

This little piece of plastic works great! It really should come with the unit when purchased though, and the topo maps should also. I went over the bars while in South Dakota but the GPS stayed attached just like it should. A good piece for sure!

 "A perfect accessory" 2009-05-04
By Norman B. Covert (Rochester, NY)
If you have the Garmin GPS 60 and a bike, you should get one of these things. You already know all the benefits of the Garmin and this mount makes the ride even that more enjoyable.

The mount stays steady on the handlebars once it is mounted and the attachment that links to the mount is easy to use. Even with my fat fingers it comes off.

I did need to purchase a replacement for my original though since my bike tipped over and broke the attachment. This just taught me to take of the GPS before trying to load my bike on the rack. Which I should have been doing anyway.

A very nice add on to a very nice GPS unit.

 "Garmin + MSN Direct = MAGNIFICENT!" 2009-09-21
By Joxxy (Long Island, NY United States)
Garmin + MSN Direct = MAGNIFICENT!

This GPS is just INCREDIBLE! It is by far the best GPS I have EVER owned! Better than any portable unit currently on the market and far better than any (over-priced OEM) in-dash GPS unit.

I purchased this GPS because it was taking me between 8.5 and 14 hours to travel from Long Island, NY (where I live) to Lake Placid, NY area (where my wife lives) bi-weeekly. The total distance is between 381 and 465 miles depending on which GPS you use. As you can guess, most of my travel time was spent in heavy traffics between long Island and upstate NY. I just wanted to try it and return it if it didn't fit the bill.

I have now owned this GPS for more than 2 months now and it has yet to fail me. My travel time is now consistently below 6.5 hours and the distance travel is usually around 380 miles (sometimes a little longer when trying to avoid traffic) . Even during Memorial Day weekend, it took me barely 7 hours to get back home with one of the heaviest traffic I have ever seen. I am so sold that I have already purchased the lifetime subscription to MSN Direct. And I already got my money worth!

I have an in-dash GPS unit (slow and lousy at best and that I hate dearly) in my 2006 BMW X5. There is a mediocre and useless in-dash GPS unit in my wife 2005 Nissan Murano. These in-dash OEM GPS units have the strangest routes, they are slow, and just take you from point A to point point B. It doesn't matter how they get you there... I have also owned 2 Garmin Nuvi (350 and 370 - both pretty good) and 2 TomTom (One and 340S (just OK).

Back to the Nuvi 785T. Sorry for getting carried way...

First, lets get the bad/suggestions out of the way:

- Does not display the speed limit/actual speed next to each other (and turning to red when over the limit) like the TomTom beautifully does. It displays mainly the speed limit on major highway and is accurate in most cases.

- The sound is just adequate, but need some improvement. Make sure to adjust the sound to 100%. The default 80% is too low and you may not hear a thing.

- MSN Direct receiver should be integrated in the unit itself, not on the charger.

- Rebooted on me once during my trip. I was checking traffic on my route and VLAM!

- I had to spend another $100 for lifetime MSN Direct!

Second, the GOOD:

- Extraodinary accuracy. The estimated time of arrival is almost always dead on.

- AMAZING display. The best resolution when compared to any other GPS out there.

- Gas Prices on MSN direct - very accurate information, but used it only once.

- Weather on MSN Direct - I love this feature and use it often.

- Bluetooth calling is nice and clear, people could not tell I was calling handsfree. But, the sound wasn't loud enough on my end.

- Great overall feature set.

Third, the GREAT:

- Traffic on MSN Direct - Simply AMAZING! highly accurate and reliable feature. I am no longer thinking about beating NY traffic. I just jump in the car and drive. This GPS really showed me what it capable of during Memorial Day weekend.

- Best routing engine on the market! Always the shortest distance and fastest time when compared to any other GPS.

- Garmin GPS re-route better than ANY other GPS by far. You will never hear "make a U-turn when possible" crap. It just recalculates the best route from your current position.

- Send To GPS - This is maybe one of my favorite features that I use almost daily.

- SUPER fast satellite acquisition and very Strong GPS signal anytime and almost everywhere.

- It is a GRAMIN!!!

My Recommendations to potential buyers:

- update the software and firmware as soon as you receive your unit

- update the maps to the latest as soon as possible

- set the volume to 100% before first use

This is simply a MAGNIFICENT piece of electronic. If you really want the very BEST in GPS technology, this is IT!

"Garmin OK but has some things missing" 2009-09-17
By Dennis Hausman (Olympia, WA USA)
I purchased a new Garmin and gave my wife my Nuvi 350. This Garmin promised to have everything I needed, what I did not realize is that they took some of what I want away. This newer Garmin voice although clear is not as good as the Nuvi 350, it is hollow sounding. The Bluetooth phone works well as long as you are not driving over 40 mph when ambient noise makes the party on the other side asking you to call them back.

Perhaps the silliest thing Garmin removed from the default screen, which to me is very important is a "north' indicator. To find north, thereby the direction you are traveling, there is another screen that is much smaller and difficult to follow. A silly thing to remove from an otherwise good product.

 "Very Pleased" 2009-08-28
By Amazonian
I have overall been very pleased with my 785t. I gave my 780 to my father, and struggled with whether to get another 780 or to upgrade. I made the plunge and went with the 785.

Pros:

* Faster screen update is really slick. It doesn't make the device navigate any better, but it does make it a lot nicer overall experience- it's almost like watching a movie.

* My 785 gets a satellite lock a LOT faster than my 780 did. After 10 hours at work, the 780 would take at least 90 seconds to get a lock. The 785 locks in within about 15 seconds.

* Maps, estimated arrival time, and speed limits have been absolutely spot on- much more accurate than I would have expected.

* I love the MSN Direct features. Some of them are novelty items, but I use the "Send to GPS" feature almost daily. This feature allows you to look up an address on Microsoft's map website and beam it over the radio to your GPS. I'll look up an address, beam it over, and by the time I get to the car and boot up the GPS, the address is right there, ready to navigate. VERY cool! The GPS doesn't even have to be plugged in to receive the data. The power cord (which doubles as the MSN receiver) has a battery built in, and receives the MSN Direct data. As soon as you connect the GPS to the power cord, all of the new MSN data is immediately uploaded to the device.

Cons:

* The Lane guidance feature looks really cool, but I have yet to find an intersection or exit in my area that has the data. I haven't traveled extensively, but have have been through a number of high traffic, confusing exit scenarios in central NC where no lane guidance or Junction View was available. According to Garmin's product description, "you'll never question which lane you should be driving in again." That is patently false until they get lane assist mapped out for every intersection in the US.

* I had hoped to use the GPS as a media player in my car. Unfortunately when you keep a large SD card > 4GB in the device, it takes a lot longer to boot up- sometimes a couple of minutes.

Overall I love the device. Lane guidance and Junction View are brand new features, and it will take some time for that data to be collected and fed into the maps. I feel sure that within the next year or two there will be much more broad coverage. I highly recommend this product.

 "A step backwards!" 2009-08-16
By shooter2jim (Ooltewah, TN)
If this is your first Garmin, then you'll probably enjoy it. If you're thinking about upgrading from the previous generation, think again. I thought I would upgrade from my 760 because of the neat display features like lane assist and junction view. In 3 different cities, the features weren't available. There was one very tricky interstate interchange on my route (in a major city) and the lane guidance would have been an extremely useful and safety-oriented feature. Garmin's failure to mention the feature doesn't work at every interstate intersection is deceptive advertising in my opinion.

I've always operated in "Track UP" view. With the 785, if you are driving a route and you slide the map to get a better view of your destination, the map magically rotates to North Up view making reading the map and adjusting your brain very difficult. If you zoom out past a certain level, the map changes to a relief map making it more difficult to see the few major roads it displays near your route. The sharpness of text and other symbols is a step down from the 760's. The 785t has 3 selectable map detail levels vs. the 760's 5. The 760 can display minor streets at a much wider map scale (zoomed out) than the 785t, making it much more useful to locate your own detours or shortcuts when on a route. 2 days after I got the 785t, I made a 400 mile trip navigating to 6 customers' locations in rural areas. By the time I got home, I was thanking my lucky stars that I hadn't gotten rid of the 760 yet. Another feature that attracted me to the 785t was the MSN service, especially the weather radar. I don't have MSN service in my city but I routinely travel to cities that do. I had to be a lot closer to the metropolitan area than the coverage maps led me to believe. The signal coverage maps online are totally misleading in my region. On top of that, I could only see radar in the area I was traveling that had coverage. I couldn't zoom out and view what was happening in my city so I had no idea what awaited me when I left the signal coverage area. The traffic map was nice but I prefer the way the FM traffic info displays on the 760 because of the unit's sharper imaging. With the 785t, I think Garmin has traded solid, useful features for "gee whiz" map spins and twirls and the highly advertised lane guidance and building views that may or may not be available in your location.

"Great upgrade from my nuvi 370" 2009-07-31
By J. Hope (Orlando, FL)
Prior to buying the nuvi 785t, I owned a nuvi 370 (basically a 350 with Europe maps) for more than a year. I found myself wanting some of the "neat" but non-essential newer features in the new nuvis that were becoming less expensive to acquire.

PROS:

* One of the biggest reasons I purchased this unit was the MSN Direct service. It was a crap shoot as many reviewers were negative on it, but I am EXTREMELY happy about my experience so far. Traffic updates (probably what is most used) are fast and just about as accurate as the FM service I had on my 370 (meaning, don't be surprised if they're right only about 60% of the time, nothing in this arena I've found is very accurate). The way the 785t integrates the MSN traffic it will alert you when you are not navigating (by saying "traffic ahead" and changing the screen to show the traffic) and it also routes you around traffic that is too heavy. On a road here in Orlando, US-192, which is often busy, the traffic also updates constantly on my 30 minute ride into work. Delays go from 1 minute, to 3 minutes, to 5 minutes as conditions appear to change in real time. This never seemed to be the case with the FM receiver, it's almost as if the traffic backups caused by all the stop lights cause this number to fluctuate. It gives me a great idea of whether or not I should take that particular road each morning or find an alternative route.

* The Send to GPS feature included with MSN Direct is absolutely amazing. Even at my office, which has one signal bar of MSN Direct coverage, I get destinations and routes I send to the GPS in 10-20 minutes. This feature makes trip planning a breeze. Locations and routes sent to the GPS are treated almost exactly like any other destination you would enter in on the GPS, and you can even edit them once they get on the GPS, change their names, etc. I only wish it worked with Google Maps, but of course MSFT wouldn't ever have that!

* The weather feature is pretty cool, especially the radar pictures. It's an animated radar. On a recent trip, it allowed us to estimate how long we'd be driving through heavy rain, and it gave a great indication of this. Unfortunately, it doesn't update quite as well as other features (like traffic) and sometimes falls behind a bit. But a new map is sent out about every 10 minutes, and as long as you have about 2 bars of MSN Direct coverage you should receive it. I love seeing the weather at my destination, but this usually only works when the GPS has been on for about 10 minutes (and received the most recent weather update); don't expect it to work right when you get in your car and enter in a destination.

* Gas prices with MSN direct work pretty well, I've used it frequently to find that station that is nearby that is just a few pennies cheaper than other places. The prices so far have been 100% accurate almost everywhere I've used it. I wish the gas prices application would be subject to the "Search Near" options you can use when using the Where To menu (ie, near destination, on current route, etc.) The gas price app will only show you stations near your CURRENT POSITION.

* Other MSN Direct features are less useful but work just as well. I tested out the flight time application. The stock application works okay, but many of my stock symbols weren't in its database. The news application is neat, but it provides very little of the actual news story.

* Satellite acquisition is faster than with the 370, and I receive stronger signals from the satellites even while in buildings or with obstructions.

* Lane assist works as advertised. When approaching a maneuver, the upper left corner of the screen will let you know what lane(s) you need to be in. This works on almost all roads I've driven on, sometimes it is more specific than other times. There is one intersection where you need to be in the leftmost right turn lane to make an immediate left, and the nuvi failed to predict this, but it did at one other time inform me to be in the leftmost left turn lane to make an immediate left. So in that respect it's hit and miss, but it usually does steer you in the right way.

* Along with lane assist, junction view is a great new feature for me. Almost all major expressway/expressway junctions are covered, even major state roads (like the Turnpike, SR-417, SR-408, SR-528 in Orlando) are included.

* 3D building views aren't real noticeable at normal zoom levels. The modeled buildings are pretty impressive, but I noticed most buildings don't appear unless you are zoomed most of the way in. In most conditions, this means I don't see the buildings on the GPS unless I am approaching a destination or turn as the GPS zooms in.

* Screen refreshes! This unit refreshes very quickly, much more so than my 370. It slowly zooms in on upcoming maneuvers (such as turns and exits), focusing your attention on the upcoming turn. It's very smooth, and I run it in the highest detail mode.

* Volume. I believe this GPS is louder than the 370 was, and the volume is more than adequate for me.

* The screen is very clear and easy to read, it reflects glare once in a while but isn't too reflective. When turned off, you will see tons of fingerprints...these don't affect operation when on though.

* Multi-destination routing is AWESOME! It's something I wish the 370 would have had, I am very happy with this!!! And having the nuvi figure out the most efficient way to order my destinations is very smooth.

* Eco Route is fun to play with. It gets relatively close to my actual gas mileage for trips, I have been calibrating it every time I fill up. I like how Eco Route can use the current MSN Direct gas price in its calculations when it tells you how much it will cost to travel to a destination.

* I tried using the GPS in a parking lot to find my way back to my car. It worked pretty well, but I couldn't figure out a way to route myself to the car (ie, where do I find this in the Where To section?)

* MP3 player works just the same as in the 370. It's no iPod, but it's pretty handy and since I don't have an iPod I will often use my GPS on flights to listen to my music (with a 32GB SD card, I can store a lot of music).

CONS

* My old 370 would show me names of lakes and other waterways, this GPS doesn't seem to show this information at all.

* The 785t takes almost as long as the 370 to turn on and boot up. I was hoping this initial wait would be decreased.

* On the nuvi 370, I could turn it on, and very quickly navigate the menus and have it navigating me somewhere within a few seconds of turning it on. The nuvi 785t needs to "rest" for about 10 seconds or so before you should use it to start navigating, otherwise it will "forget" your input. Example: I turn on the nuvi 785t, quickly navigate the menus and tell it to take me home. I am then brought to the map (which is probably still loading) and nothing happens. I must wait for the map to load before going back through the menus and telling it to take me home. This is a little annoying, I wish it acted more like the 370 in this regard.

* There are some options the 370 had that you could customize that it seems the 785t does not have. I also liked the wider range of vehicles available back when I went to the Garmin Garage after I got my 370. Luckily, I was able to copy the vehicles over to my 785t from the 370. I wish the 785t would allow me to specify a backlight timeout.

NOT REVIEWED

* Bluetooth: I have an external bluetooth hands free set, and as my phone cannot share its address book, I saw no reason to switch and immediately turned the bluetooth off.

* Automatic time zone transition: I was surprised my 370 did not support this, and I haven't had the opportunity to try it on my new 785t...but I hope to on my next cross country trip!

* FM Transmitter: I wouldn't expect this to work too well, and I have no need of using it, but it's available at least.

FINAL WORD

In all, this GPS was a great upgrade from the 370. I am really enjoying the MSN Direct capabilities, enough so that I purchased their $19.95 special for 9 months of service. I am considering a lifetime plan. I was not disappointed with MSN Direct, but check their Web site prior to purchasing to make sure they provide coverage in your area AND that the features you want are available in your area.

This is probably one of the most polished pieces of Garmin hardware I've seen in a while, and it all seems to work very well together as advertised. Thanks Garmin!

"Maps are fine, but not for 2 GPSrs or if you upgrade your GPSr" 2009-08-09
By M. Voelker (Green Bay, WI USA)
The mapping software is just fine and does everything that one needs it to do. The price point is comparable to other units.

However, the current licensing agreement is shady. You would think when you buy a map, you can use the map. On other GPSrs we have had (Lowrance), we have been able to install the map on up to 6 SD cards.

With CN NT, you can unlock the map for one unit, period. If you have two units, you need to buy a map for the second unit. If you upgrade your GPSr, you are out of luck unless you can get Garmin to relock the first unit and unlock the new one. Bottom line, plan on buying a new map for each GPSr in your purchase price and, of course, without detailed road maps your GPSr base mapes are basically useless for road navigation.

Garmin's license agreement is not explicit on this point. Yes I know that they need to find a way to prevent someone from installing the maps on hundreds of units, but most software vendors have some provision for householding. Even Microsoft gives you a PC and a Laptop install.

Item shipped promtly and arrived quickly.

Had some issues with the software that once installed the program would have an error on start-up and fail. After 3 or 4 Uninstall/Reinstalls it worked great!

Definately reccomend this over the Mini SD card version as this allows you to control the map on your computer and have future rights/access to it.

"Nice features; some serious weaknesses" 2009-08-03
By Denis (Seattle WA USA)
I've been using these maps for about 3 years on a GPSmap 60CSx. Now I won't travel without a GPS. There are some really nice and unexpected features in City Navigator, but also some shortcomings to be aware of.

The "search" function frustrates me every time I use it. MapSource (Garmin's Windows software for mapping) has no wildcard searches. Searching for Highway 34 is not the same as Hwy 34, US 34, 34, E Hwy 34, or Highway 34 N. If the name isn't in their database exactly that way, then your search is not going to find anything.

Routing is quite good with these maps, even down to details (like U-turns where medians prevent lefts). If you miss a turn, it will re-route you within a few seconds.

Note that Garmin products purchased for one GPS unit can NOT be transferred to a new/replacement unit (except by Garmin via warranty replacement). Garmin's anti-piracy "unlock" procedure is archaic and tedious. If you ever upgrade your Garmin, you must buy your maps again. One "unlock code" is assigned to one USB-connected GPS device, by serial number, and cannot be changed.

"not as bad as the oregon but still not great" 2009-08-24
By David Smith (Penn Valley, PA USA)
I tried the Garman Oregon with the topo maps and immediately returned it. The problem was, that unit in bright indirect light, the map was not visible. The Colorado, with the green shaded base map it came with was not much better, though better than the Topo map (less information than the Topo map). However, when I switched to the Cn North American NT map -- a detailed city map (an extra $100.00 list) and turned off the Autoroute DEM basemap I got a nice clean, visible, clear background with lines that were reasonably visible even in bright light. I am not sure it would work on a bicycle where the distance from eye to unit is greater but for walking it was OK. Also do not use alkaline cells -- the unit sucks the life out of the alkaline. Lithium cells last much longer. However, battery life is still not great. Do not use, only, this device where your life depends on it. If going into untracked areas take paper maps and lodestone style compasses. The device seems cluttered with features that add little like calendars, stopwatches, and calculators. I would have been happier if the engineers had spent more time on battery life and screen visibility. I have a hard time believing that any of the designers took the unit out for a trial on a bright day.

"Very good product but needs some minor modification." 2009-04-15
By E. Tucker
I purchased this GPS for the sole purpose of Geocaching and while I'm sure it will be used for hiking/biking that isn't why I got it. The unit is very easy to use one handed thanks to the control dial. It fits easily and comfortably in my hand. The battery life is good while using Energizer 2450MAH NiMH rechargeable batteries as well as Li-Ion batteries. There are a few things I would like to see changed on this unit. The battery compartment has some flaws mainly the rubber gasket around the case. The gasket had started to come unseated so I contacted customer support. they were very fast and helpful. I asked if I could re-glue the seal without voiding the warranty and was given a go ahead with that. So for the time being that problem has been solved. I also recommend using some clear non conductive silicon grease around the seal to both allow it to slide off easier and give it a bit better water resistance. Lastly the GUI is very nice but I would love to see a few more features added. I would like to be able to separate cache types within the unit and load GPX files individually. On top of that I would like to be able to see the dates that caches were found. On multi-day trips it would help when logging finds on Geocaching.com. Outside of those few issues which I consider to be fairly minor since I could easily fix most on my own I highly recommend this product.

 "not bad + not great=meh" 2009-04-04
By Joshua Flowers
First off let me preface this by saying i'm not a world class Geocacher. to date i've found about 57, about 9 of which are Micro size.

i started off using a Garmin E-Trex Venture HC about a year ago and logged a good amount of caches. a few weeks ago i got my tax refund (who needs to pay off car loans when you can get more gadgets!) and did some research. it came down to the Colorado 300 and the Delorme PN-40. i checked user reviews, professional GPS sites and even groundspeak Forums on what people would suggest betwixt the two. finally, after a week, i gave in and bought the Colorado. plus using Amazon to get almost $150 off Garmin's MSRP, it was a sweet deal. i'm just being honest here--Amazon's got some great deals for GPS, whether they're new or old. so, Here are my thoughts:

*compared to the Venture, it's got a larger screen + touch wheel + true paperless geocaching (that means it downloads a snapshot of the webpage off geocaching.com and allows you to read the Logs/Hints and description of the cache including size/terrain/difficulty). That feature alone is worth paying the extra money for this unit. the comparable Garmin GPS 60SX also offers paperless caching, but only the Colorado has a digital compass. Trust me--you need one!

*calibrating the compass is fairly easy the 4th time you try. a small indicator tells you what speed to turn the unit and it can make a huge difference doing it before each hunt.

* the basemap is, as it states, BASIC. i'd strongly suggest upgrading--but don't worry about buying a map from Garmin. i found a site off a groundspeak forum (www.gpsfiledepot.com) and after a little background research, it's legit. i downloaded the NC topo and NC IBYCUS20 map set. what a HUGE difference that map can make. i can now see what street each cache is near so no more guessing what street to take when i use only the compass feature. it's a free download, but a large one (877MB) so you have to use the internal SD memory port (though i couldn't find any literature on this GPS that was extensive, i actually used a 4GB SDHC (secure digital High Capacity)card. it's a newer style of card with an increased write-speed to transfer information from a computer/camera to the card. Trust me--download the map for your state--and any topo map. even in forests with micro caches i've been able to get a better idea where it's hidden if i can judge how far away it is from a nearby creek or stream (data NOT included in the basemap).

*the battery life is poor. definitely buy rechargeable batteries. i took a fresh pair of AA's geocaching yesterday and you'll get about 6 hours worth of juice. this isn't bad, by any means, but it's just more cost effective in the long run.

*backlit feature= pretty average. compared to my previous Venture HC--this Colorado is worse. i'd rate the Colorado backlit feature at 6 out of 10 and the Venture at 8 out of 10.

*the user manual was probably written in about ten seconds by a low-end Tech, so if this is your first unit you're gonna be searching forums for a while to figure out how to use it. if this is your second GPS unit--you shouldn't have a problem.

*geocaching.com offers Direct-to-GPS data transfer for Garmins (And now Delorme) so transferring caches is so incredibly easy.

*i originally loaded the MapSource software that came with this, and my previous Garmin, but after logging all my caches online and on the unit (you can actually Tag a cache as Found and it removes it from your actively-sought cache list) it's really not necessary UNLESS you download additional maps like TOPO or IBYCUS. you need mapsource to transfer those maps to the unit.

*battery compartment= it's a tricky little bit of mechanics. the battery compartment is a slide-off cover held in place by a latch. God help you if you're not strong with your finger tips to release it. it's annoying, and they could have done a lot better with it.

*receiver==it does have an input for an external antenna, and the built in does have WAAS (wide area augmentation system===it means it uses earth-based receiver satellites to get a better fix on your position) enabled feature. it's got a pretty strong antenna, and i was able to get a strong fix on my position in about 25 seconds Cold Boot inside my two story house.

so overall, based on battery life, backlit screen, compass accuracy and overall user-friendliness, i'd give this unit a 7 out of ten.

Pros=paperless caching, large screen, antenna reception.

Cons=battery life, back lit screen, battery compartment.

if this is your first unit- you're in for a treat with paperless caching.

if it comes down to deciding between the DELORME PN-40 (keep in mind the delorme has a free map download and annual 29.95 unlimited map downloads), i'd suggest the Delorme. the delorme even has Black and White areial pictures, color satellite imagery (think Google Earth on a GPS unit), and the highest durability of most GPS units.

"Worth the money! Great for hunting" 2009-02-23
By D. Chambers (Atlanta)
I think most of the 1, 2 and 3 star reviews on the Colorado 300 were written before Garmin released several software fixes. This unit may have been released for sale before all the bugs were corrected in the software. Kinda like Microsoft Windows 95. That thing crashed all the time till the bugs were fixed.

I purchased mine on Feb 13, 2009 and am very pleased with it. I use it hunting and scouting our 650 acre deer lease in a very remote part of Georgia. I have marked almost every deer stand, food plot and landmark on this property, thus creating my own map of the area. You can do this with any GPS without buying other maps, however the addition of Garmin Topo 2008 map adds elevation, remote roads, streams and other landmarks making the experience so much better. I recommend you buy the map on DVD not the SD Card. The DVD version allows the PC/Mac, map and GPS to interact and makes for a great experience plotting trails and waypoints. You can also send info from the PC/Mac to the GPS (or SD Card) memory and vice versa.

The learning curve was slight, took me about 2 days fooling with it to master all features and the system works as promised. Yes, I agree with others that the base map is very, very limited. One reviewer said worthless, that's not true in my opinion, because the roads that the basemap does show are good reference points if you become lost.

I gave the unit 4 stars due to battery life of about 10 hours on alkaline batteries. I have switched to 2500 mah Energizer rechargeable batteries and have seen improvement to 12-16 hours depending on back light usage. I have not yet tried Lithium batteries and 2900 Mah rechargeable batteries are available but very expensive. The back light is the critical factor in battery life. Unlike some other units, most of the time in daylight, no backlight is necessary at all.

I picked the Colorado over the Oregon due to lower price (-$200.00) and the fact that the Colorado uses the full size SD Card. The full size SD card reader in the Colorado allows me to view pictures from my game cameras in the field. In addition, Many of the reviews said the touch screen on the Oregon did not work well in very cold weather, that could be overcome by putting the Oregon in a warm inside coat pocket but it was a factor for me.

What I like about the Colorado:

The Rock and Roller, is great, it is truly a one hand GPS. I can access all controls with just my thumb. Entering text is not as fast as I would like but I can live with it.

Sattellite lock is very fast and will lock on in the basement of my home. Initial lock was accomplished in about 15 seconds after inserting batteries the first time for a cold start. After that it is about 1 second warm.

Accuracy is good I have had 6 foot accuracy in open areas, but most of the time under cover it is about 12 -15 feet.

The large screen and 3D views are awesome. Even better with the Topo Map.

The ability to customize the screen set up is also a great feature. If there are features you don't use much you can move them on the menu and save the frequently used ones for the main menu.

What I don't like:

Battery life needs to be improved. I can see this would be a big issue with backpackers that are on the trail for 12+ hours and changing batteries if they use the back light much. I just carry an extra set of batteries with me to overcome this issue.

The gap between the unit and the case that others have mentioned does not give me confidance that the unit is 100% waterproof as claimed. However, I am not concerned at all about using the unit in a rain shower.

Conclusion: I would buy this same unit again. This is my 3rd GPS unit in 8 years and the very best. I would recommend you buy it along with the Garmin 2008 Topo Map Set. Many of the people that reviewed this item bought it when it first came out and paid $500 or more for it. So, I can understand their disappointment for that kind of money combined with the firmware bugs. However, you can buy this unit for about half of that price now and most of the bugs are fixed.

UPDATE:

Battery life. I tried Energizer Advanced Lithium batteries and got 22 hours of use from them with limited use of the back light. They lasted about 4-5 hours in a low battery condition. Thats about 7 more hours than I get with my 2500 Mah rechargeable AA's. The Energizer Ultimate Battery is susposed to be even more powerful than the Advanced Lithium. However Lithium batteries are over $2.00 each, so I think I will stick with my rechargeables.

 "Very User Friendly" 2009-09-05
By Thrifty Shopper (Washington, DC)
This is my second Garmin Nuvi 350 that I've own (my car was stolen and had to replace the first). I'm actually finding this refurbished unit to be more reliable then the first which I bought brand new! Although it sometimes has a slight delay in finding the current satellite location, I've simply learned to be sure I program the address outdoors and allow a few extra minutes for the unit to calculate. Outside of that, it's extremely easy to use and has various displays to suite your preference. Garmin has an excellent reputation and the refurbished unit is the best bang for your buck!

 "Super Deal" 2009-08-20
By A. Peterson
I bought a refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350. It is the first GPS receiver I have owned, though my son has had a Garmin for several months. I agree with the majority of respondents that you would have a difficult time distinguishing refurbished from new. My unit arrived on time and had maps that were a little out of date. Getting them updated online was easy. It took about an hour with Roadrunner. The Nuvi 350 is simple to use and has some nice features. I did not need the mp3 player, book player or picture viewer, but text to speech was essential and I could not beat the value or the $110 price. It worked great on the road. Satellites were quickly accessed and a suitable route determined. The routes were not always what I would have chosen, but I can see the value of gps devices in a strange city. I am completely satisfied with the purchase.

 "So far: So/So" 2009-08-10
By dimperioa (PA USA)
I purchased a factory refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350 in July 2009. This was my first time owning, but not using, a GPS. I received the product fairly quickly and in great shape, no scratches or screen problems. It came with a GPS to computer cable, a dashboard and windshield mount, a car charger, a carrying case, and a small pamphlet of information (the manual is on the GPS memory/or online). It also came with the North American 2009 maps. I tested out connecting to my computer and even adding mp3 files, all good so far. However, when I used it on a test drive it lost its signal on a long, open stretch of road and need to be turned off and reset. It also was difficult to hear when using with the windows down, but that is sort of expected.

Pros:

Good screen brightness.

Included all accessories and new maps.

Mounts easily and effectively.

Announces the Street names before turning.

Good Battery life.

Cons:

Sometimes loses signal and needs to be turned off, and or reset(hard to do while driving).

Low volume if driving with windows down.

ABC, not QWERTY on screen keyboard.

Have to press Warning agree button every time turned on.

Released in 2005.

Neither:

From pressing the On button until Maps are loaded it takes about 30-40 seconds.

Flip up antenna.

Overall at this point it is only OK for me, I will need to test it out more to see if it loses it signal more times when I am driving (about 4 times so far), but that is the my biggest problem with it.

 "Nothing Special Nothing Bad" 2009-09-09
By Blair Goering (Greenville, SC United States)
This is about what I expected based on the reviews. It's nothing special but it does what I need it to do. I did have my Edge 705 get turned on somehow while in the case and I typically careful about closing it and making sure it's not hitting anything else. I wish there was a better way to secure the actual GPS in this. What would be great would be a case that has a molded foam that the GPS could sit in and that had specific compartments for the other items. I'm thinking this cost about $2 to manufacture so the $25 + that most pay is hard to swallow.

"Great for carrying my Forerunner and accessories" 2009-04-11
By Stephen M. Charme (Cranford, NJ United States)
This case is well designed for carrying my Garmin Forerunner 305 and heart rate monitor. Plus there is room for my ipod, armband, and miscellaneous other items.

The case is a semi rigid "clamshell that offers much more protection than a simple nylon carrying case. It opens in half, and each half has a mesh to hold items in place. There are ventilation holes in the top and both sides, so you don't have to worry about a "gym locker" smell building up. There is a single zipper that easily closes the case.

Unlike other reviews, I don't find the space to be cramped. I put my Forerunner in one half, and the heart rate monitor in the other half, and still have room in each half for other items. Because of the mesh holding the Forerunner in place, there is absolutely no worry about scratching the face of the Forerunner.

Although the heart rate monitor does have to be folded a bit, this does it no harm.

The case does not have a carry handle or strap except for a small finger strap at one end, but odds are you will be carrying this in a gym bag or some other bag, so a finger strap is all that you really need.

I like that this case is reasonably compact, yet roomy enough to hold other items that I use together with my Forerunner. I have tried other kinds of cases, and like the protection and design of this case the best.

"Garmin suction mount; be careful with yours; they can break." 2009-09-12
By Duncan Brown (Fairfield, IA USA)
We had a Garmin suction cup mount (for our Garmin Nuvi 350) for about a year. The mount worked great, until it broke. It's an elegant, flexible item, but be careful with the swivel feature; over time the stress on the swivel can break the connection to the base.

The adjustable clip attached to the suction cup of our Garmin Nuvi 360 broke. I was hoping not to have to replace the charger and suction cup. It turns out the piece I needed sells seperately. We had the new piece in less than a week from when it broke. It was easy to install and is back to new again.

This one does the job.. but if the temp changes a lot then the suction tends to loose and the gps falls... which lucky for us hasn't damaged it at all. We do have this still and will use it on occasion (when traveling to take up less space) but find the bean bag to be much better!
