"It's ok if you haven't used the Infiniti nav units..." 2009-08-22
By J. Doria (New York, NY)
I really didnt want to get into these non-integrated navigation units. I have an 07 Grand Cherokee Limited with no factory NAV and am starting to use it a bit, so I thought the nuvi 885T was a good solution.

I did some research and came up with the 885T. I have two cars with factory navigation units, BMW iDrive and a Infiniti. The Infiniti OEM is the benchmark navigation unit. iDrive is the epitome of complication, but still bette than the 885t.

First, I understand these are $300. But Im more than happy to spend $2,500+ for a properly operatng and integrated factory unit after owning this 885T for 2 days. Its a little off on the address (street numbers) and its just plain ugly sitting on the windshield with a cord (I had a hardwire run)dangling.

Bluetooth works well, but its a bit tinny. Not so much that you would not use it.

The FM output is a waste of time. It doesn't stop the radio or CD to give you the next direction, so useless.

If you live in Westchester County, skip the MSNDirect. I constantly get this message telling me to check back later for news and weather.

Voice recognition is excellent. But like the Infiniti, by the time you tell the car where you want to go, you are there.

Google Maps navigation logic is a bit better than the Garmin. The Garmin has me getting on and off the LIE to go to Southhampton. (shortest distance doesnt compensate for common sense) Coming from White Plains to Rye, it calculates 1 exit early off of 287 to get to Purchase St

I'll be looking for a 2007 Jeep factory unit on eBay and someone to install it to replace this. Fun attempt to save money, but not what I expected.

Just experiences from a highly congested, condensed, and fast moving area.

 "Great Product" 2009-08-20
By Lawrence C. Ethun (Dayton, Ohio United States)
Excellent product. Maps are precise. Have no complaints about loudness of speaker. Power cord for MSN is a little bulky. Lane guidance is a great feature if you remember to use it.The voice recognition takes a while to get used to and learn the navigator phrases, but overall, a very useful device.

 "Garmin 885T" 2009-08-19
By Stephen C. Benine
I've had GPSs for over 20 years and this is the best I've ever seen. The accuracy gets to within 10 feet (even in the house). The voice recognition is superb and unless I have the top down in the car works every time and is easy to learn. Creating a route is quick and obvious. I signed up for MSN Direct for the "lifetime" which turns out to be about 4 years - unlike what it implies by the name. The traffic portion of MSN is great in that it "knows" where there is a problem and by default routes you around it without you having to take any action. Using the update gas prices has saved me some money and taken me to gas stations I would not normally visit. I've loaned my stocks and it's nice to have the prices updated on the road. The weather forecast with radar is unique. All in all I can't image there being much improvement to this unit. The lane assist is good when it applies - only on major intersections. I added an 8 Gig chip and loan my photos and music on it with room to spare. Using the FM through the radio is not practical. With the volume set on high you don't really need to.

"Speakers are too tinny for hands free phone" 2009-08-19
By J. Budreau (Boston)
This is a very good garmin gps. The voice recognition is top of the line once you learn its vocab. The hands free phone application would be great but for the speakers. If you are driving at speeds over 40 mph and have any road noise at all in your car, may as well give up. I echo the sentiments of others who criticize Garmin for using such a tinny sounding speaker system. It couldn't cost that much more to put in quality speakers. Its still worth getting this system, but just recognize that this is a huge limitation if you are looking for the hands free app.

 "Garmin 885T" 2009-08-16
By Kenneth B. Adams (Marysville, Michigan United States)
This is my second Garmin device. It worked fine as we made our way across the country this summer. I could get lost in a shoe box, with this GPS it is harder but not impossible. I liked the lane assist. In California there are lots of lanes and not always clearly marked enough for my needs. So far so good.
