 "Meets minimum standards only" 2009-08-14
By Jamieson Greer (Wichita, KS)
I should note from the outset that the 255W is the first GPS navigational system I have owned, and perhpas my expectations were too high. Furthermore, the primary reason I purchased a Garmin was for navigating using the much-touted Points of Interest function. I know how to get around town and how to get from town to town on highways; what I do not know, however, is how to get to certain points of interest in an unfamiliar place. On a recent vacation to Colorado Springs, the Garmin was only correct with its points of interest about 50% of the time. Now, it navigates correctly to a manually-entered address (generally), but the Points of Interest function frequently has incorrect pre-set addresses for churches, attractions, monuments, etc. This Garmin was brand new and had 2009 maps and data on it...and much of it was completely off. In one instance, the Garmin was off by about ten miles-a big deal in a mountainous city with bad traffic. This kind of thing happened about 50% of the time.

In my mind, any navigational system can map its way to a manually-entered address. This is the bare minimum expectation for a GPS unit. The Garmin can do that, mostly, but it is completely unreliable for the Points of Interest function, which is one of the most valuable (potentially) and attractive features. Instead of helping me find places, it actually wasted my time and sent me off on dirt roads and roads that did not exist. Poor implementation of a great idea.

Another problem is that it doesn't quite act like a map...it should have the names of streets written down on the display roads as you pass them. It can make it hard to tell where you are prior to arriving at the next turn.

Perhaps my expectations were too high, but this unit barely met the minimum. Don't waste your money on this one; just but the cheapest unit available because it will probably meet the same goal of finding a manually-entered address. The Points of Interest function is simply unreliable, and in my opinion, that is one of the most important functions of a GPS.

"Knows the best way to get you there" 2009-08-13
By S. Wells
Have been playing with the 255W for about a month now. Set it to navigate to an address we visit frequently in a near-by city and even though there are several ways to get there, it took the route we usually take, not the shortest, maybe not the best road, but what we consider to be the best route there. The voice prompts give you plenty of warning before your turn and there is no problem understanding the street names. I bought a $3.00 AC/DC converter from Big Lots so I don't have to worry about getting to computer to charge the unit if there is no computer around. Very happy with the unit and the price from Amazon.
