Garmin Astro Combo Unit GPS Based Dog Tracking System. Garmin International is pleased to announce, the Astro GPS enabled dog tracking system. Astro is the ultimate solution for the hunter who has spent many wasted hours searching for his four legged friends. Now you can release the hounds and know what they are up to. There are two components to the Astro system: a handheld receiver /Astro 220/ and a dog collar transmitter /DC 20/. The DC 20 is a transmitter that relays the dogs position to the Astro 220. It is mounted in the included, lightweight neoprene harness. The harness straps to the dogs collar, wraps around the chest, and behind the front legs. Users may also choose to fasten the DC 20 to an existing e collar by using the included collar attachment plate. Astro can track up to ten dogs at once and has the ability to update the dogs position every five seconds. In flat, unobstructed terrain, the Astro system can reach up to five miles. This system requires very little configuration out of the box. Once the transmitter and receiver acquire a GPS signal, the receiver will automatically display the location of the dog. For your outdoor adventures when your dog is not by your side whether it be hiking, camping or bike riding, the Astro 220 serves as a full featured handheld GPS unit. It contains top notch features such as a high sensitivity GPS receiver, long battery life, a bright sunlight readable color display and a rugged IPX7 waterproof exterior. This unit also offers automatic routing with turn by turn directions. The Astro 220 has a micro SD card slot so you can add preprogrammed data cards with detailed maps such as TOPO, Inland Lakes, BlueChart and City Navigator.

This unit is ok at best, but I had two problems with it.
I don't exactly hunt the thickest spots or under the lowest tree branches, but I often still lose reception. When [...] hunting with my pups, they have seldom gone far before striking a track. Even when they were still within eyesight, they would frequently go in and out of range with the unit always saying poor satelite signal, then no signal. The trees weren't that thick. I hadn't gone into the really thick brush yet, but the unit would still lose reception constantly.
The second problem is with the distance tracking. I took my dogs on a leash walk around a known distance of 2.5 miles. While watching it as we walked the unit would update me every five seconds or so on the dog's location. While in the city with nothing overhead to block the signal, I never lost the dog's location, and the map showed fairly accurately where we had walked but the distance stated we had gone 12 miles! This is one feature I had really wanted to use to know how much excerize my dogs had gotten each night when we [...] hunt. However every night, just like when we walked in the city, it would show a ridiculous amount of miles covered in a short time frame.
On the positive side the mapping seems to be accurate enough to show where my dogs are, it's just that the distances are very much exaggerated. I still can find my dogs by going in the direction they show up on the unit, I just never have to walk as far as the unit indicates. This unit works ok, but the features I thought were going to work that didn't are enough for me now to usually leave the Astro at home when we go out.

Before purchasing, I was concerned about the two-star reviews: broken transmitters and antennas, etc.
My dog is a lunatic, 30mph Wirehair Pointer who tears through the brush, fences, low hanging trees of the mountains of Central California at high speed. He is comfortable with the harness, and we have had zero problems.
The harness design is kind of clunky....but it works fine and I look forward to upgrades.
Meanwhile the GPS part of the system is very thorough and very versatile for the humans. All kinds of bells and whistles, very smart.
We are very, very happy with this device.

I am a bird hunter and this a very effective tool to find fast a dog pointing birds. It is also very usefull in finding your location and the location of the dog in difficult conditions (fog, thick forest, etc)

The rebate advertised for this product is NOT for this product, but rather for the update to the dog collar transmitter.
The rebate requires you to own both the DC20 dog collar AND the DC30 dog collar. You can purchase both if you wish, but if you buy only the handheld unit and the DC20, which is what this product listing is, you will NOT get the rebate.
Beware. Your price after rebate is NOT $349.99. It is still $399.99
