 "I'm not lost anymore" 2009-08-18
By James Hendershot
I travel to Chicago, St. Louis, and many other mid-western cities and with all the construction it is sometimes really hard to get around. I finally broke down and bought the Garmin GPS. I cut miles and time off of my commute from airports to clients. Like I said above in the title I'm not lost anymore.

"Brand-name, mediocre unit. Good for tech challenged, not for keen users" 2009-08-12
By Tathagata De
Pros:

1. Free lifetime traffic

2. Next turn arrow at top corner

3. Free one time map update

Cons:

1. Limited routing choice: Faster (Highway) or shorter (back roads). There is nothing in between. Faster choice will give extreme high preference on Highways; As a result, faster routes are not always faster.

2. There is no choice of avoiding U-turns.

3. When you start entering address, it will not show you recently used cities. So even when I am entering a street address in home town, I have to re-enter city name every time.

4. Compound that problem with non-QWERTY keyboard. I never guessed a non-standard keyboard is such an annoyance. If you need to search for characters when you are in a hurry (may be when you are stopped in a traffic light), you will feel the pain.

5. Routing does not consider delays at intersections due to traffic lights. As a result, ETAs are incorrect.

6. You can not customize to display distance to your destination (instead of ETA)

7. Navteq problem: For highways with a physical divider, it will ignore crossovers as a valid route. To understand: enter 9513 N Tryon St, 28262 in Google map. Navteq will not recognize N Tryon St (northbound) and Barton Creek Dr as a valid intersection. As a result, Garmin will not allow a left turn across the crossover.

8. Trail color is pink (an eyesore)

Summary: I am keeping this as a back-up unit since it has traffic information and latest maps. I will use 3yr old Mio as my primary GPS.

"Great features for the price" 2009-08-10
By Wyxgsjm (California)
I have only used my first GPS for 3 days, but I already enjoy the great features

(1) Free traffic - It works surprisingly well for me in east SF bay area, it accurately and promptly reports conditions of 680 and 880. Even though I use 680 and 880 every day for commuting, I am often hit by traffics on 680 and 880, but today, 265T guided me correctly. This saves me time and money - I think those global warming guys should provide rebate for FM equipped GPS!

(2) Bluetooth - Works well with my Samsung Beat. It supports address book as well. The only problem is that the Beat always ask for accepting GPS or not even though security is off. I am still trying to find a way so that Beat accepts GPS without asking for confirmation(It always works if the phone tries to connect GPS, no question asked)

(3) GPS - Response time is very good. Speaker is loud enough for me.

The only problem I had with this unit is that there is a pixel always stays as dark blue at lower left corner. But Amazon staffs have been really helpful on resolving this issue. All in all, I am very happy with this unit and Amazon service.

 "Signal strength issues" 2009-08-03
By John Doe
I bought this GPS from Amazon specifically for a trip to Hawaii. During road tests in southern California, it worked fine - I periodically saw Walgreens ads etc related to the free traffic reports. It does seem to take longer than my car's built-in GPS to locate satellites etc though.

In Hawaii, I expected signal issues, say if we were in the middle of the towering hotels of the Waikiki area, but out along the north shore where there are no obstructions, I had no signal for 50-60% of my trip. We would be driving in the same open fields and the signal would get lost.

Aside from the signal strength issues, the 265T is very nice to use. But given that you need a signal for a GPS to be useful, I couldn't rate it highly.

 "It works great" 2009-08-03
By J. Rogers (Mill Creek, WA)
It worked great on our trip. It was easy to use and I liked that it was portable. The bluetooth option was nice for the long drive and saved me from having to use the speaker phone. The voice prompts worked well, sometimes they were a little slow, but if watch the screen it will show you the next road coming at the top of the screen. I especially liked hitting the places to go button when looking for a place to eat or get gas on our long trip.

"Still the most accurate and versatile" 2009-08-17
By Morrie Gasser (Massachusetts)
I've had mine for several years, and after reading about the newer Colorado and Oregon units, I would still go with the 60CSx. The screen is more readable in sunlight than the newer units, despite their bigger screen size, and it still has a more accurate antenna/receiver system. It's the best handheld for hiking because of its accuracy and topo maps, and a pretty good navigator in the car as well, so it highly versatile if you need a unit for both purposes. I particularly love the fact that it can save "infinitely" long tracks as GPX files in its flash memory (organized by date), long after its 10,000-point active track log is full.

In addition to being able to use it now with the Mac, another great thing that has happened more recently, is that you don't have to go to Garmin to get downloadable topo maps. For example detailed 7.5'-scale New England topo maps are available at [.....]and they're free. You still need a PC to install the maps, but then you can transfer them to your Mac for use with Garmin's software.

I do have some annoyances, all of them related to use in the car:

1. Zooming out to get a big picture of where you are, covering an area bigger than about 20 miles across, can be very tedious due to slow redraw, and going beyond that is near-useless. This is not an issue when hiking or boating, but in a car it means you still need road maps if you want to get the really big picture. You'll tear your hair out trying to viewing a spot a few hundred miles from where you are now by zooming and panning. However, if you know the city or other point of interest, you can use the Find function to get there quickly.

2. Small roads disappear when you zoom out a certain amount, which makes sense except when those are the only roads around. In sparsely populated areas, this can make getting your bearings difficult. To be fair, I haven't found any of the dashboard GPSes do any better in this regard. Even online mapping services have this flaw.

3. The search feature to find something generic (a restaurant, gas station, etc.) gives you a list based on distance from where you are, not distance from the route in the direction you are traveling. Because of this I've found that feature difficult to use unless I know the name of a specific place I'm going to.

 "A classic!" 2009-08-06
By J. Grobler (OC, CA United States)
An old favorite of the GPS geek crowd. Lots of tools/maps/updates available (from the likes of [....]etc.). Not the latest & greatest (compared to touchscreen Oregons), but reliable and good for hacking and geeking out.

The addition of the MicroSD chip (now on all 'x' versions) makes it very versatile.

5 star tool.

I had a Garmin GPS map60 before and was always losing signal in tree cover. Haven't had that problem since I got the 60 CSx. Most of the features are the same exept for the compass and the altimeter. Color is nice also. Worth the extra money.

 "Southwest Asia" 2009-08-01
By I. Perez (USA)
I purchased this unit along with Garmin's middle east software. I spent a considerable amount driving roads in Kuwait and this unit's routing feature was extremely reliable at getting me out of more then a few jams on their sometimes very precarious roadway system especially while driving during sand storms and withstanding environmental extremes. Purchase this unit, you will not be disappointed!

"Recommended Reading and Mapping Applications" 2009-08-01
By E. Mittman (Minneapolis, MN)
I chose this GPS for its ability to use customized maps and because it consistently received good reviews. It is my first GPS and I expected it would take time to learn how to use all of the features.

Although the user manual that comes with the unit will help you get started, for me it was not sufficient. Unless you are already an expert GPS user I recommend that you get some additional books that discuss how to use one. Here are the best ones that I have found:

GPS Made Easy (GPS Made Easy: Using Global Positioning Systems in the Outdoors)

This book is especially useful because authors use a 60CSX to explain many GPS features, and there are many screen shots. It also presents a number of scenarios that explain how you would use the GPS in the field.

Basic Essentials Using GPS, 2nd (Basic Essentials Series)

This book also has some good scenarios for using the GPS in the field.

GPS For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Lists good places for downloading maps

By far, learning how to obtain and install maps has been the most time-consuming activity. I've spent tens of hours surfing the web learning which applications are needed to manipulate and install the maps, and where to find the best street and topo maps. I like Garmin's MapSource for routing and MapSet Tool Kit for manipulating downloaded maps. MapSet Tool Kit enables you to register and use the maps in MapSource.

I have been very happy with my purchase and find this unit can do most anything I've asked it to, but it does take time to learn.

 "They Frequently fall apart!!" 2009-08-18
By T. Hutchison (Pennsylvania)
I have a Garmin 760 GPS and the power cord has fallen apart twice. Once on my motorcycle it cost me almost two hundred dollars. The "button" on the very tip had fallen off. I never noticed and plugged in the GPS. Later as I was traveling down the road I noticed I had no brake lights or turn signals. I was out of town so I took my bike to the nearest dealer who spent two hours trouble shooting. Then misdiagnosed the problem as crimped wires. Charged me and sent me down the road where within minutes it shorted out the turn signals and brake light again. Long story short.....keep an eye on the end piece that screws on. It loosens frequently. If you find the parts you can put ir back together, if not you buy another.

 "nothing more than average" 2009-08-05
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service)
This carrying case for Garmin GPS navigators is very smooth to the touch and it clearly has enough room with some inside padding for my Garmin navigator. It seems well constructed and I like that. It also comes with a thin side pocket.

However, this is definitely not the best purchase I could have made. The case is open at the top (or one side, whatever way you look at it) and therefore you must be very careful about placing the GPS inside this case and then carrying the GPS inside. The GPS could easily slip out and perhaps fall onto a hard, concrete sidewalk making your day a rotten one indeed.

This is not the worst carrying case I've ever seen; but keep in mind that this carrying case is best used when you are carrying the GPS inside something that is closed, like a piece of carry-on luggage for an airplane ride or perhaps a lady's purse. The case and the GPS inside might also fit in a side pocket of a laptop computer carry case. If you can still make use of this case under those conditions you'll be satisfied. It's not for just carrying around any old way; there no strap for you to attach it to your belt and that's a disappointment, too.

Three stars.

 "Excellant Nuvi Case" 2009-07-31
By Bill A. Belt (Dallas, Texas)
Never had a case for my old unit and this one is excellent. Some of the reviews may indicate otherwise. Yes--the leather is a little hard and I find it as tough as can be. Now I can take the unit out of the vehicle, slip it into my brief case or pocket and not have to worry about it being stolen when I valet park. Also I can hook up wile sitting on the patio at Starbucks. The case meets all our needs and is exactly as we expected. If you are looking for a soft leather you might be better off just getting a cloth cover at the dime store.I find the protection offered by the case to be very good unless you plan of playing Frisbee with the unit.

 "This is perfect!" 2009-07-21
By Reacher Creature (Rochester)
This is perfect case for your Garmin GPS. It's affordable, but this great protection for your GPS unit. This does exactly as it should. What I like most about it is that the inside of the case if nice and smooth so it won't scratch your GPS unit.

It's been said that if you're not careful, when you slide in your unit, it can turn on as it rubs up along the side of the holder, here's how I make sure that doesn't happen. When I slide in my GPS unit, you pinch the sides and it makes a little "alcove" so when the power button is about to hit the side, it just slides in and never touches the top. When you have it in, you just let go of the sides and it hugs the Garmin like it should and doesn't turn on.

This is such fantastic feature and it looks nice too. If you have a Garmin, then you'll want to get this and protect your GPS unit. I'm not sorry I bought it, and there's no way you'll be sorry either.

This rocks!

This GPS system is good for the price. I had my time comparing GPS devices below the USD$100.00 and I found this one on a 'hot deal' here.

Pros:

-Small

-Good price

-Bilingual (English/Spanish)

-Loud speaker

-Pedestrian mode

Cons:

-Lack of headphones jack

-Lack of text-to-speech functionality

-Favorites get lost after soft-reset

-Soft reset often required after couple of days without use.

-It has a lag to obtain satellites so DON'T try to use it unless waiting couple of minutes before it gets signal.

"Too bad, the Garmin nuvi 250 has some very nice features" 2009-08-16
By Claro Evangelista (New York City)
I bought Garmin nuvi 250 for my bicycle (the nuvi 200 series has a very nice bicycle mount available) after getting lost in Brooklyn, but checked to see how it works when using it for driving. The unit I got seems defective. You can't program the unit without stopping and waiting for a signal to lock on. It constantly loses its signal even on bright sunny days. And when you lose signal while driving, the only way for me to lock on a signal was to pull over the side and wait for it. I also lose signal when going under the bridge. I compared it to my old Garmin StreetPilot c580 and the c580 was much better in acquiring a signal and I can change destinations on the fly. I returned the unit and replaced it with a TomTom 140s which is much better when it comes to acquiring a signal. Too bad the Garmin nuvi 250 has very good features for the money like 5 hour battery life when unplug, perfect for biking, the TomTom only has 3 hours. But if it is unable to acquire a signal reliably, it is useless. My boss has the Garmin nuvi 265T and she is very happy with it. I thought about returning the unit and exchanging for the same model but after reading the reviews here, the signal issue is quite common so I bought the TomTom instead.

I thought this was a great deal and a great company that would have reliable products but was mistaken. Shortly after I received a new product from Amazon, it stopped working after a couple of days since I got it. Doesn't have functionality that you could get by paying a bit more and would highly recommend. Do not waste your money on this, if you are looking for something cheaper there are other ones that are better. I got a Nuvi 750 after this, which has been great so far.

It is a good product, but just a little expensive.

And there is a small place that is not so convenient, when I chose a destination to go and I move the map to see how it goes. It just choose another destination for me and direct me to the new address. Hope Garmin could improve their design and not let their custom change their destination so easily and unconsciously.

Here are things they can improve: it could give on what lane to line up before a turn; the last turn alert is too close to the time one has to make the change; and the gadget that holds it on the dashboard (cannot place on the windshild in California) falls off easily, particualarly when it is hot.

I used my Garmin 360 on a 3300 mile motorcycle ride. It was subject to considerable vibration and a few drops of rain. It performed flawlessly although the suction mount broke loose after hitting a particlarly nasty pot hole. (I had used the supplied smooth disk and glued it to the dash of my bike. I wrapped the extra wire from the cigarette charging unit around the handle bars in case of just such an event.) Periodically I had to realign the angle of the unit so it was facing toward me. It would droop after a time. The swivel could use a wider range of motion and could be tighter. I had to watch the mounting disk carefully. After a day of sitting in the sun it would some times warm up and begin to loosen.

The unit I received had the 2009 maps installed although the 2010 maps were available at the time of purchase. It could have been more up to date. I did not encounter any road that had changed enough to make any difference.

Overall, the unit performed flawlessly. It ran on battery long enough to take care of any and all off-bike excursions. I dropped it in my pocket several times when I was in cars with other people. It was just a handy thing to have. It was accurate although the screen refresh rate could have been faster at times. I was nearly through a few intersections before the screen would show a turn. The manual is adequate for an introduction. There are many hidden features and capabilities that are not referenced in the manual at all. Experiment a lot and you will find them.

The only problems I had were with the mounting system. It wasn't designed for a motorcycle, although I don't know what difference it makes. The dash of a car would certainly get hotter than the dash on a bike. The glued on mounting disk would come off a car dash too. I have had the suction cup system fall off the dash of a car too. It is a good mounting system, just not great. It could be better.

I would buy this unit again, although I would shop carefully for price.

Product and services were Good. Speaker volume was too low to be heard while on GPS mode. Had to return it.
