 "Works like a charm!" 2006-03-14
By Gulliver (Illinois)
We recently took a driving trip from Chicago to Key West making numerous stops in between, including metro Atlanta. I was able to load a significant number of maps onto the memory cartridge, covering almost all of the locations we traveled between Illinois and Florida. We were able to accurately navigate all of the major cities we visited which included Orlando, Daytona, Miami, Naples and Tampa, and never felt lost. More importantly, I never had to reload additional maps after the intital download which did take some time. However, whatever time it took to put the maps onto the cartridge in the first place was certainly made up for by the convenience of having them ALL there when we needed them!

the product works just fine but it hard to believe that max size for the data card is 512mb for 120+ dollars and you can buy a 2g sd card for 7 to 20 dollars figured you might get more bang for your buck since the data card is twice the size of a sd card

 "Much improved reception" 2009-09-20
By Clasina Gm Oneill (USA)
Using the Garmin Nuvi in een Prius in Washington DC is frustrating due to the amount of time lost "acquiring satellites". This antenna is easy to install (I put it on the front window shield right above the dash board) and the time needed to acquire satellites is much less.

"Great fix for Nuvi 660 problem" 2009-09-14
By W. G. Smith
I own a Garmen Nuvi 660, that I have owned since 02/2007. Just this year it would no longer aquire satellites. In looking through the GPS blogs, I found that hooking up an external antenna was a cheaper fix than sending the unit back to Garmen to get repaired for $110! I opted for the external antenna option. I love this antenna and the fact that it comes with the small plate that allows you to stick it to the inside of your windshield. It is also magnetic for external installations as well. This unit also gives me stronger reception of the satellites. The Nuvi 660 has a feature that allows you to see the satellites and where and how strong the signal is. Often times there pegged out to max! I did buy this based on the reviews over the Garmin antenna. I can't speak for the Garmin antenna, but the Gilsson does a great job. Oh and thumbs up to Amazon. They have always come through with great prices and quick turn around. Thanks

"Great antenna - fixed my Nuvi 350 reception problem" 2009-03-13
By Lantana Al (Lantana, TX USA)
My Garmin nuvi 350 received satellite signals fine at first, then later (months after) started have trouble acquiring satellites and sometimes lost them for long periods of time. I did a little research and it seems possible that there is a problem that can occur where the GPS thinks an external antenna is attached when it isn't (due to a defective or failed part). Plugging this antenna into my Garmin has so far completely resolved the reception problem. This antenna seems well built and designed and the reception seems excellent too.

 "Perfect for me" 2008-11-22
By Sideshow Rob (Washington, DC)
I needed an external antenna because the best place to mount my Garmin C330 is in the ash-tray space under the radio in the center console. I never got great reception with the GPS largely shielded by the dash. This antenna immediately and dramatically improved the strength of my GPS signal - from 1 bar in my driveway to 5. I no longer loose a signal in heavy woods or in cities. Best of all, this product came with the suction-cup mounting bracket, though the strong magnetic base on the Gilsson sticks to parts of my dash without the bracket. Best of all, I can now keep the GPS out of sight, and the antenna removes in 1 second when parked and can also be kept out of view.

I have no experience with the similar Garmin antenna, but this one provides me with a full 5-bar signal strength everywhere I've tried it.

 "So far, so good" 2009-10-04
By David L. Harman
I have one of the nuvi's and it doesn't hold a charge for more than a couple hours tops making it useless on any trip of length without the cigarette lighter adapter. The garmin one that came with mine crapped out after a half a dozen uses and of course after the warranty, so I bought this one as a replacement. So far, so good, works in my 99 toyota tacoma and in my gf's 99 passat.

 "Better than the original!" 2009-09-29
By Laura L. Hall (Weatherford, TX USA)
Bought this replacement cigarette lighter power cord for my Garmin GPS. The original adapter had a screw top (for fuse replacement) that apparently unscrewed over time, and the pieces could not be located. This replacement does not have a screw top so we won't have that problem again. Plugged it in, works fine, and off we go on another trip.

"Fits the Garmin perfectly, better quality than the factory piece" 2009-09-12
By J. Coulter
This charger is better quality than the original piece. The charging unit on the factory piece use to come off in 5 different pieces if you pulled it out of the cigarette lighter the wrong way. Eventually, we lost one of those pieces and the charger was useless. This Gilsson charger is MUCH better than the original. The charging piece is solid and there is no way that it could come apart.

"Does not fit Zumo 550." 2009-03-07
By E. Hummel
The Zumo 500 and Zumo 550 look almost identical, but they have different connectors. The Zumo 500 uses an 18-pin flat plug (which this product has), but the Zumo 550 uses a USB mini-B style plug. I couldn't use it since it didn't fit, so I can't comment on its performance.

 "Works, somewhat expensive" 2009-09-10
By Kevin Le
Bought 3 of these for my bikes to mount my Garmin Forerunner 305. Each comes with mount and 4 zip ties. It worked on my bikes with round handlebars but wasn't compatible with my FSA K-Wing handlebar, which was flat at the mount point. Amazon has the lowest price but $10 for a piece of plastic and some ties is kind of expensive.

 "Works fine" 2009-08-14
By CxAgent (Texas)
I'm only writing this review because Amazon asked. The bike mount works fine. I haven't had any problems with it. I use it on a mountain bike where it gets lots of abuse. It has never lost the Forerunner except when I have hit it with my body in a fall. I can't blame that on the mount - I shouldn't be hitting it.

Stop- This item is a replacement for the quick release bike mounting kit. It does NOT include the new wrist band for the watch. If you want full quick release capabilities you need to buy the KIT, not the replacement bracket. Spend the extra $10,,,it's worth it

"Good but there is a catch" 2009-05-06
By Jamal Faulkner
Works well for what it is however, there is a catch... You have to take the band off the watch to clip it in. Like another reviewer stated (wish I would have listed) its actually easier to find a big piece of foam to cut to size and wrap around your handlebar. This is what I ended up doing and its working great.

 "Much improved" 2009-10-09
By Larry Ellis (Naperville, Illinois)
This unit is MUCH improved from its predecessor, the GPS 18. This unit is 100 times more sensitive than the GPS 18. I use it inside my home for setting the time on my PC.

The old model seldom locked more than 3-5 satellites and frequently could not even get 2. This newer model locked 8 at first try, all with good signal strength. I've almost never noticed it fail to get a fix indoors (it happened only once, for a very brief period of time).

Well worth throwing the old unit out and replacing it with this one!

 "They work" 2009-07-14
By Cleatus
Didnt get em from Amazon, but they do the trick. The serial port way is a bit dated...but its what our systems needed.

If you connect these to your PC, and the mouse starts jumping around- unplug the gps power and it will come back- go to device manager, mice and ponting devices- it shows up in there as Microsoft serial ballpoint. disable this and plug it back in- should work.

 "Forerunner 301" 2009-07-19
By Kristen Hackney (Boston, MA)
I was really excited to get this product as I was hoping to train for a triathlon and was pumped that it included a bike setting. I had a forerunner 201 before which I loved. However, I really dislike this model and I felt I needed to warn anyone looking to buy this model. The satellite is CRAP. I can run the same route 4 different times and get 4 different distances. The satellite goes out - it doesn't matter if I am in the city, on a trail, or just main roads in the suburbs. I have found when I have run races and brought my garmin the mileage is WAY OFF - I'm talking 3.7 according to Garmin for a 5.1. Understandably it has a lot of great features, but not worth the price if it can't do the simple things it advertises. Buyer beware!

"Massive achilles' heel on this one" 2009-07-13
By Matthew E. Greer (Morgantown, WV)
This is a great product in just about every regard. I use it for biking and when I'm on the road I absolutely love it. I then come home and upload my ride into Sports Tracks and it's great.

But... when you first start out (or after a long break), it will take anywhere from 5 to 15 (yes, 15!) minutes to sync with the satellites. This unfortunately makes the 301 frustrating and often useless.

When I'm riding to work I don't want to wait for this stupid thing to sync. When I'm on a long weekend ride my buddies don't want to sit around waiting either. This just makes the thing useless. I am now shopping for another GPS system that doesn't have this problem.

"Works effectively - there are a few points to note though." 2009-05-25
By Iain Cottingham (Aurora, Co)
I have had one of these since February having previously used the Oregon Scientific Heart Rate Logger with Download (until it fell in the kitchen garbage disposal).

The question I could not answer easily when searching was: does this work in the Gym, the answer is: Yes (and no) - there is a setting which switches off the GPS and just records your heart rate, and it works well if your working reasonably hard (elliptical, treadmill etc), although for light workouts (me on my Wii) the heart rate monitor struggles at best.

I have used it whilst Skiing (theres a nice website that uploads your garmin data and even tells you which runs you were on etc), and airsofting.

GPS performance works well except in wooded areas, although useful for navigating the woods, if you need accurate recorded data it will let you down, also as all GPS devices if your out running and you make an accute turn (e.g. 180 degrees) the recorded distance will fall off (the unit records points approximately 4-6 seconds apart. Taking wide loops alleviates this issue though.

Battery life does how it says 14 hours on a full charge is no problem, however after I have downloaded into my laptop, I have picked up the unit for the next run and found the battery dead, so now once I disconnect from the PC I cycle the power to make sure it is switched off.

The Garmin proprietary software works well, seamlessly syncs and displays lots of useful data. Online motionbased software (provides huge amounts of data on your runs, walks etc) works well and with the downloadable Garmin Connect software pulls data off the device as easy as the software on your machine. As I have said before with skiing there are other more specialised websites that either use .GPX tracks or use the Garmin Connect software to easily upload your data.

Any waypoint editors, etc which work with the other Garmin walking/exercise units will read and write data to this device with few issues if any.

Summary:

This is the lowest priced forerunner with a heart rate monitor.

If you dont have a big budget and want a GPS recorder/heart rate monitor get this one.

If you can afford more get the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor, apparently this has a better GPS receiver.

This unit has provided me with loads of motivation to get my backside off the couch and get out there and run/walk.

 "Great heart rate monitor" 2009-05-03
By MacInTX (TX)
I have been using this on an inside track as a timer and heart rate monitor. It works great for that. Being able to download the results to a computer for analysis is great. It makes it easy to provide the data to your doctor or anyone else. Today I used the 301 outside and found that the GPS didn't work as well as my Nokia phone (running Sportstracker). So I give this a 4 of 5.
