 "Better than a guide." 2009-10-02
By R. L. Puckett (San Ramon, CA)
This chip was absolutely worth it's weight in gold. Actually, more than that. We would have been hopelessly lost on numerous occasions without the GPS, and the European chip was phenominal. If you put in shortest distance for a route, this guy will take you over hill and dale and on roads only barely wide enough for a small car, so it's best to use fastest route or, as we did, put in towns that are near to your present location and a road that you wish to travel. We also used the GPS while walking, and it worked flawlessly. I will never travel again without the GPS. Friends that we visited in Germany were awed by the accuracy of the GPS and are going to buy one.

 "Great product." 2009-09-30
By Becca (Baton Rouge, LA USA)
I purchased the Garmin City Navigator Europe for a trip to Ireland. It was definitely a good investment. Driving without it would have been a nerve wracking experience. It quickly recalculated a missed turn, and had all the little lanes and roads on the map. My only complaint is that when I loaded it after purchase (9/2009), it said that it was not the most current version, and that I should update on the Garmin website. I didn't bother to do that, and on the trip I found myself on some new roads that weren't on the map. It didn't cause me any trouble, but I would recommend updating for anyone who buys this product.

"Need to learn to re-boot Garmin to use international chips/maps" 2009-09-08
By Jeffrey P. (Boston, MA)

The Euro version of the Garmin worked well for us in France - with the same caveats as US - GPS can put you in major cities when you should be avoiding them, particularly during rush hour.

After a confusing issue returning to US, my wife called and found out how to re-boot the Garmin and we got it to work back home again.

 "European chip" 2009-08-21
By DW&BL (Morrow, Ohio USA)
We purchased the Garmin Nuvi 660 fourteen months prior to our current trip and felt that it has become an essential tool for American travels. So, we had no hesitation to purchase the City Navigator Europe NT. During fifteen days usage, we spent approximately 80% of the time in rural areas of France, Switzerland, and Germany. In rural roundabouts, the next village or town is noted on the sign posts, but the Garmin referenced the landmarks as street names or route numbers. For this reason, I reduced the rating from five to four stars; otherwise, we were very satisfied. The detour feature was valuable, and the traffic delay warnings saved us several times.

This is my third Garmin and the best I've had! The touch screen is very user-friendly and easy to input coordinates. The GPS sensitivity is very consistent and precise! I have geocaching friends who prefer my Oregon to their Colorados! If you can step up to the Oregon, it's the way to go!

+ Durability, water resistance

- Hard to read - glare, low contrast

- Inconsistent speed and alitude readings

- Only works with ENELOOP batteries (not 2 other types of NiMH batteries that I tried.)

- No routing (unless you buy another map)

- No 3d view (unless you buy another map)

- No elevation history page (contrary to some 'screenshots' you may see)

- Ancient maps (very few roads)

 "Good GPS ... But..." 2009-05-31
By Donald E. Thomas (Bend, Oregon)
Recently bought the Oregon 200. It is super fast at acquiring and seldom drops out.

Installed base map is chintzy and out dated. 10 years ago my city was bypassed by the major highway US 97. Didn't happen according to Garmin! It still shows US 97 running through the middle of town.

Trekking through the forest or riding my quad is great! Seems to be extremely accurate and the cookie crumb trail is easy to see.

I conclude, great for trekking, poor for automobiles. I just ordered the expensive topo map chip. If it isn't more up to date then the base map I'll have to send it back.

"Good GPS receiver with longer battery life than expected" 2009-03-06
By C. Chiu
I just had Oregon 200 for a few days and decided to perform an indoor battery life test to see how this receiver holds up on battery life compared to its siblings, Colorado 300. With WASS off, Battery Save off, backlit off and auto track mode on, it actually remained on for 17.5 hours with a pair of Sony CycleEnergy 2000 mAh (NiMH) batteries. Garmin claims 16 hours for this receiver. In comparison, Colorado 300 can only hold for 10-11 hours (less than 15 hours claimed by Garmin) in the same test. This is way beyond my expectation, particularly after my disappointing experience with Colorado's poor battery life.

The receiver is also very accurate and acquires signal fast. It took about 3 minutes for the 1st useful sat. acquisiton (cold start) and under 10 seconds to have good lock (warm start) afterwards. My test was done indoors and Oregon had lock on more than 7 sats all the time with 15 - 40 feet of accuracy.

As this is the cheapest model in the Oregon family, some features are also stripped off.

1. Only comes with 24 MB of internal memory. Micro SD expansion is supported though.

2. No audio beep (even for battery low warning).

3. The built-in base map has no DEM so no shaded relief on this map. Oregon 200 does support shaded relief for maps with DEM (for example, US TOPO 2008).

4. No altimeter, barometer and compass.

5. No wireless transfer capability to share information with other receivers.

6. No support for HRM and bike candence.

7. Only lanyard included (no carabiner).

Overall, I like this unit so far for its built quality, accurate positioning and long battery life. Too bad Garmin has stripped off several good features (probably contributes to better battery life performance). To users who don't need those features, this is a great buy if the price is right.

OK, so the GPS fits--but where do you put the car adapter cable, the car mount and the USB cable? NOT in this way too small case, that's for certain! The GPS screen is not really protected. It rests against a coarse fabric if put face to the case, and is subject to scratching by anything else in the case if placed face out. A really POOR design by a company that should know better!

"Excellent upgrade from etrex vista hCX" 2009-10-11
By Mark Witt (Oakland, CA)
After losing a Garmin etrex vista hCX which I loved, I decided to go with the Dakota 20 (D20). I will be comparing the two in the review.

Maps and Storage:

The D20 comes loaded with a basemap, which has most major highways, but no streets. So for your purpose, you can choose City Navigator (required for auto navigation to work), or Topo 2008 (shows mountain countours & most lakes). Luckily, I had both Topo and City Nav on my computer.

Since the D20 comes with 850mb of internal memory, it's enough for self selected regions in Topo 2008 and/or Inland Lakes map, but not for City Nav. I put in a 4gb microSDHC card, which handled the 1.2gb .IMG file of the city navigator map. What might trouble some is that the D20 does not come with Mapsource(a great program for making custom maps, and upload trails and routes) or any kind of software. The hCX comes bundled with Mapsource. Although if you purchase the City Navigator, it comes with Mapsource.

When combining multiple maps onto the device, the D20 is much more convenient as you simply add the .IMG files (must have different file names) into the Garmin folder. D20 will automatically detect the maps and enable them. In the hCX, you had to merge all of the .IMG files into one or use seperate microSD cards, which was a toll. Just a note: Like the hCX, the D20 clumps all of the routes and trails into one file(named by date) on the gps.

Auto Navigation:

I didn't find much info about Auto Navigation for the D20 before purchased, so I wasn't sure what to expect. After trying it a few times, it's definitely a step up from the hCX. There's an Automobile mode for navigation, where the map is tilted so you can see the turn coming from farther ahead. The directions text is noticeably smaller on the D20, which might be hard for some to read. The longer the street name or direction, the smaller the text. You can customize what information you want to see (i.e-distance to destination), although you can't edit the text size. The D20 gives almost the same beep as the hCX when turns are approaching(no voice of course). The D20 navigation overall is more pleasing to the eye.

Battery Life:

The hCX wins on battery life 25 hrs vs 20 hours on the D20. There is a battery save mode on the D20 that definitely improves battery life. How it works is the screen will turn off in about 15 idle seconds to save power, and you simply touch the screen to see again. On D20's regular battery mode, I noticed the battery drains very quickly -definitely less than 20 hours. Recharcheable NiMH AA batteries are a must since you'll be going through them quickly. I use Sanyo Eneloop and Rayovac Hybrid. Be sure to change the Battery type under Setup>System to get the correct battery meter.

Visibility:

This has been the biggest complain by some, but I found the visibility/brightness on the D20 to be suitable for most types of lighting, including in the sun and in the dark. You can adjust the backlight (although brighter means less battery life). I'll admit it can be harder to see in certain angles of sunlight, but this hasn't been a problem during auto nav or regular use. The hCX is slightly brighter, but it's not a significant difference.

Accuracy:

During initial use, the satelites weren't detected on the D20. I had to walk outside before the Satelites could lock on. The D20 has three modes for Satellite: Normal, WAAS, and Demo. I've had the most accurate luck with WAAS as i'm assuming it's using the new satelite technology. On the D20 i've gotten accuracy as close as 10 ft, whereas on the hCX 20ft was usually the closest it would ever get. In general though, the satelite signal on the D20 is about the same as the hCX.

GPS Interface:

This is where the D20 far outshines the hCX. You navigate through all of the menus by touch. This is such a relief from using hCX's mini joystick and side buttons. What's nice about the D20 is you can move the map around by sliding your finger on it, whereas on the hCX joystick you have to sluggishly go at an angle. The D20 works much faster in operation. For example, it refreshes the maps considerably faster than the hCX. This equals less headaches when trying to pinpoint a location.

The layout on the D20 is very straight forward. The main menu contains all of the icons (Map, Where to, Track Manager, Setup, etc.) and you can scroll through all of the features by the arrows on the bottom corners. The hCX has a higher learning curve as you have to manipulate multiple buttons to get somewhere.

GPS Use:

I use the D20 for fitness activities: kayaking, jogging, cycling, and hiking. I can easily plot my map with distance and tracks(breadcrumb trails) onto websites that map .GPX files(Mapmyfitness, Motionbased). I use it too, of course, for auto navigation. The hCX is capable of doing all these things as well, but its not nearly as modern and simple as the D20.

Overall:

While it was quite unfortunate I dropped the hCX in the lake, the D20 has proven to be a suitable upgrade and replacement. The D20 and hCX both have their strengths and weaknesses, but i'm definitely enjoying the experience of the user friendly D20. I have yet to determine it's true ruggedness, but will post updates if anything else should be mentioned.

 "Great GPS" 2009-10-01
By Glenn Gordon (Williamsville, NY USA)
I had previously owned and lost an eTrex Legend Cx. This is a giant leap forward. Garmin advertises this as their new entry level unit, but its 800 MB internal memory holds all of the topo and street maps for the eastern US. The inability to do street routing without first buying City Navigator® North America NT seems to be an artificial limitation.

The lock in is almost instant when I turn it back on at the same location that I turned it off, and it can pick up a signal from inside my house. I no longer lose the signal when I go under deep forest cover.

The screen is bright, and better than on my old unit. When I first got it, the compass was not functional, but once I updated the unit online, it worked great.

I wholeheartedly recommend this unit.

RAM Mounting Systems Handlebar Mount for Garmin GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, 60C, 60CS, 60CX, 60CSx

I bought this mount to replace one that cost more money and failed. I use my GPS mainly quading at the Oregon Dunes and the occasional trail rides and it has saved us longer travel times by having it with us. I always loop my GPS through it's strap to my front rack in case there's a mounting failure. On one of our stops I saw my GPS hanging from it' strap and free of the mount, the original mount failed to secure the GPS by releasing the top mounting button on back of the GPS. That mount bolted to the rack and provided no adjustment for viewing and I think it was to rigid of a mounting system. I love this Ram Mounting System as it provides multiple viewing angles and is a bit taller as well. I still secure the GPS strap to my rack but have seen no problems at all. I have seen that the mount will give a bit when we go through the woopies but not so much that I lose my viewing angle. So a strong mount, with great adjustment, and a great price make this a smokin' deal.

 "Rugged mount" 2009-08-12
By fossilfuelenthusiast (NY)
I used this mount on my dual sport bike and it held up very well to a 560 mile trip. This trip was mostly on dirt roads and the occasional nasty trail. It holds the Garmin securely, however the Garmin started to show wear marks in 2 spots. This was due to sand and vibration. I think a thin film of silicone in those spots will stop the wear. Overall, i'm quite happy with the product.

"Improvised to Make It Right (Tight)" 2009-08-05
By T. Piquet
First time out was a flop - literally. The mount felt like it was securely fastened to the handlebars. However, after about two miles the mount flopped over and was hanging upside down. We have a very nice rail-trail locally. It's a decent place to ride, but in order to get to it from our house we have to bike about 3 1/2 miles on city streets ... a lot of which are in bone-jarring, teeth-rattling pathetic shape. Because of problems I've created for myself in the past by over-tightening bolts, clamps, brackets, etc, I was leary to tighten the U-bolt on the RAM handlebar mount any more. What I did to solve the problem was that I cut a small piece of rubber ... single thickness ... from an old bike inner tube and wrapped it around the bike's handlebar right where I (re)mounted the GPS mount. Now the mount stays put. [It would be helpful if the manufacturer would include a small strip of rubber along with the rest of the mounting hardware.]

"This saved me a lot of headaches!" 2009-09-28
By T. Luznar (Florida)
I bought this SD Card for an upcoming trip to Italy because I would be renting a car while I was there. Having this European map was a lifesaver. It gave us the ability to go off of the beaten paths. I found the map to be very accurate...even within the complex streetscapes of Florence. If you missed a turn, it would recalculate your route accurately.

Once, I was driving on a highway that had several tolls. This was an inconvenience because there was a 5-minute traffic backup at many of the toll booths. Finally, I requested that my GPS find an alternate route without tolls. Off we drove onto 2-lane roads with breathtaking views of old towns, farms, orchards, churches, and lakes. We toured the Tuscan Italian countryside like I never thought we could. Also, I used it to take me to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italian beachside communities and the Port Civitavecchia.

I even used it while on my Mediterranean cruise. I would see land in the distance and wonder where we were. I just turned my GPS on and within a moment, I was able to see our location. I also used it in the Greek Isles...Mykonos to be exact. It's great if you want to rent a scooter for a few hours and not lose your way.

Make sure that your GPS can accept this card. I had to do some research to see if this was compatible with my unit. I used the Garmin Nuvi 265W and it worked great.

I had a ten day trip coming up the following week. I ordered through Amazon. The free shipping came in plenty of time. All I did was plug the chip in. The Garmin picked it up immediately. The directions were so good that the voice prompt led me through every roundabout over five hundred miles of driving free of error. And not once did it snap back with anything more than "recalculating". Garmin with the plug-in was perfect in every way. Except when recharging - the Garmin would shutdown when plugged into the recharger. I was using my own USB cord rather than Garmin stock.

 "Spot on" 2009-09-22

I bought this for my wife's nuvi 260W as we were visiting the south of France. I've been here many times before, but traveling here can be a challenge, lack of (easy to find) posted street names is #1 on the list.

This (micro)SD did just what it advertised, having a fantastic selection of streets in all but the tiniest of towns (it doesn't have the Route des Cretes, between Cassis and Ciotat, which has been around for 2000 or so years, maybe the cartographer was scared of narrow roads without rails) but I saw parts of Marseille that I hadn't seen before and getting around Nimes, Uzes, Nice, Monaco and St Tropez was a breeze.

One caveat though, if you understand French (but speak English), choose French language on your GPS. The 'translations' to English (because they are phonetic pronunciations) are awful. You will spend a huge amount of time laughing your [...] (Try Francois, Allende, La Ciotat or pretty much any street name, they're all quite funny)

Highly recommended, worth every nickle!

 "No Information" 2009-07-06

I just received this product and it took 3 hours to get it to work on a 60csx. The manual consists of 1 3"x 3" page in English of which 1/3 is a warning and 1/3 is a legal disclaimer.

I'm still in the States but from what I can see the maps are very good, with plenty of useful POI's. This chip did not work with Garmin Mapsource or Garmin Map installer. Insert the chip into the unit and figure it out from there. Meaning as far as I can tell, no PC tie in.

In my opinion Garmin makes the best mapping product on the market. Which is a shame because they are consistently overpriced with minimal support. It takes hours on line to see how useful their products can be. Which can be a little scary when you can't get on line.

It was exactly as expected and helped me get all around Athens. I did not use it around other areas of Greece or at all in Italy (yet). With it's network of roads downtown it was able to get me from point A to point B knowing the one-way streets. The only drawback was that it doesn't react as quickly as I hoped as it has to read from the SD card so there are slight delays.

I think it's great because you can go off the beaten path and know you can get to your destination.

Just returned from a two week driving trip thru northern Italy and used my Garmin NUVI 350 with the SM card for Italy - I would have been extremely frustrated if I did not have this navigational device with me every time we entered one of the major cities...It took us to each hotel (or other attraction we were trying to locate) even when we missed turns etc...I would highly recommend this to anyone unfamiliar with driving in Italy - it's worth the $99 and more..

Let's be up front about this. Maps, GPS, directions from the guy on the street, you're going to eventually get lost driving in a foreign country where you don't speak the language. That being said I can not adequately express the joy and lack of tension I felt driving in Tuscany while we had our Garmin City Navigator of Italy and Greece. The criticisms mentioned in Irina's review just prior to this one are all true, but in the end, so what. On those occasions where the data did not have the new off ramp or entrance to the I22 or the creation of the new roundabout in Siena you simply press detour and in about 5 seconds the new route is calculated. For me the beauty of this product was that in the end I knew it would get me there. Maybe it didn't seem to be the best route, but I could certainly not have done better with a map and my wife calling out directions. The only thing I would be aware of is the old - garbage in garbage out - advice. How you get there will be determined to a great extent on how precise your end location address is. If you are going to Florence but don't know the address of the parking garage, there is only so much the Garmin can do for you. (Been there, done that.) A couple of hints. 1. When in doubt, zoom out on the map, click on the location you are headed to and save. Some locations just don't appear in the address list no matter how many times you try to type in the name. I found this was often due to my misunderstanding of how towns, cities, and streets were categorized. That being said once I found the location on the map I was usually given the proper name and was able to find it in the data base; 2. The "attractions" section has a wonderful supply of information, including parking garages in the cities - found that one out too late; 3. If you are lost or get to an unidentified one way street, be quick with the detour button (menu - detour), it will save you a lot of time; 4. If you are taking a long drive, double check. Plot the route on the Garmin, then zoom out and use the touch screen to drag the map from beginning to end. Make sure that you and the GPS are in agreement as to where you are going. Had that problem going to the Coast. We were about 10 minutes away and the GPS took us up a mountain - as my wife said, this doesn't look like the beach. My fault since I had used the incorrect ending address so therefore, finally; 5. Bring a map - what can I say.
