 "Perfect solution" 2009-09-10
By CRL (Peoria, Illinois, USA)
This case is well padded to protect the GPS device, yet is still small enough to put in a cargo pocket, a purse or hang on a belt loop. A GPS device is too expensive to leave unprotected and this case does the job. We use our Garmin for both traveling and geocaching, so it is handled a lot. Highly recommend this item.

 "Good Little Case" 2008-11-05
By KC (Lansing, MI USA)
Bought this with my Nuvi 500. It is made of hard synthetic material that smells like new shoes. The only reason it gets 4/5 is because they could've made one side toucher to protect the touchscreen. (or the whole case to protect from falling) The case material is fairly rigid and will protect against scratches and a few bumps but it is not going to save your Nuvi 500 from a fall onto a rock or what have you. However there is no better option on the market that i can see, so this case will keep your Nuvi 500 out of the elements and give it a nice sheltered home. The inside of the case has two elastic bands on the sides that only allow it to open half way before stretching, not sure if i like that or not. I am satisfied with my purchase, however.

"A nice case, but it could have been better." 2008-11-04
By Timothy B. Riley (San Antonio, TX USA)
I own and have owned quite a few GPS receivers including a recently purchased Garmin Colorado 400t. I bought my new Nuvi 500 (my 3rd Nuvi) as a cross-over GPS, one that I could walk around with, bike with, use to geocachache, as well as use it in a car. This is what the 500 and the 550 were designed for (according to Garmin's website). I had hoped that Garmin might have designed a great case for it, as they did for the Colorado series. Alas, this was not the case (pun fully intended).

The GOOD:

* It's lightweight

* It is very compact

* It seems to be good at keeping out the elements

* It's priced right

The BAD

* For a GPS that is billed as being field-worthy this case has a zipper (making it harder to get into), not a latch as does the Colorado case

* It has no belt loop, mount or strap to allow one to easily carry it in the field. The Colorado case has several mounting options, this case has only as tiny string on the zipper

* It has no storage options, not even for an extra battery

I am very happy with the GPS unit itself but the case could have been designed to augment the function of the device, not just hold it. This may have been designed with all Nuvi's in mind, which would explain it's generic features. However, a waterproof, multifunctional GPS like the 500 (and it's brother, the 550) deserve a case of their own.

I ordered this product and it was shipped on June 14 and was supposed to be rcvd by June 18. When it was not received yet on June 22, I sent a request to trace and rcvd back an answer to wait until June 29. On the 28th , I sent another request that said I didn't think I was going to rcv it and they sent another unit which I rcvd in 3 days. Never did get the first unit. I believe the first unit must have been ripped off in the mailing process. I did appreciate the fact that there was not arguments about shipping the second unit, because at that point I really wondered how it would be dealt with. Good Job!

On a lighter not, I am very satisfied with the gps. I haven't had it very long , but so far have been very satisfied with the features etc. Hope it maintains that satisfaction.

"Refurbished is not a bad word" 2009-05-26
By P. Scherzer (Maine USA)
Yes, I had to return the first refurbished 760 -- it failed in the first hour of use. However, Amazon made the exchange simple and speedy. This second unit is working very well. What surprises me is the accuracy and detail of the data base. I found that a route of just a few blocks that I had come to use habitually was longer than the route advised by the Garmin 760. That may not always be so because of construction or other road conditions, but it is still reassuring in general. The verbal turn directions and graphic display are very clear, and the directions to prepare for the next turn (what lane to use) is very helpful.

 "Great but overkill." 2009-05-16
By M. McIntosh
I used the product comparison for this unit and thought it was the best for the money. Didn't need the European map in the 770. I'm dissapointed in the FM transmitter. Not real clear and cumbersome to use. Same with the Bluetooth feature. Speaker isn't the quality it needs to be useful. People on the other end can hear 'ok' but it's too distorted to be used practically everyday. Would have bought one less expensive without the Bluetooth and FM transmitter if I had it to do all over again. Overall, very pleased with it!

"How did I live without it?" 2009-05-12
By T. Anderson (Detroit, MI USA)
Very nice clear screen, voice can be set to come out the car radio speakers, audio books available. The book mutes itself and backs up a little bit when the talking directions come on. The bluetooth allows the voice of a cellphone call to come out your speakers too. It worked ok but I never use that feature. My husband bought a chip with another map on it. Another cool thing is it has a whole phone book in it with phone numbers and addresses. I have used that several times and called ahead on errands. My only complaint is the battery length seems a little short, use the cigarette power point cord. When you plug in the cord the voice is nice and loud too. The other negative item is when you try to use it as a picture viewer, you put put the pictures on the chip and then it is really slow to load the pictures to view them. This is the only poor thing about the Garmin and it is not what this tool is supposed to be good at. At what it is supposed to do, finding directions, it is great. I couldn't live without it.

My Garmin Etrex Vista was great for geocaching but the base map that was provided was next to useless. This card put the whole USA and it's roads into my GPS and improved its function 100%. I have a MacIntosh computer that isn't exactly friendly with Garmin GPS's so this solved the problem by allowing me to by-pass my computer and install the system very easily. Easy to use, accurate and worth the money to get the most out of your compatible GPS Garmin units.

As usual these Garmin maps do a good job of getting you from place to place but it is not possible to download them from the microSD card to the computer. Also, I found a number of large Canadian retailer locations missing from the database. The Garmin rep could not give a good reason for this other than only so much would fit on the card. I'm sorry they shortchanged Canada.

The Garmin map update products are terrible! The instructions for installing map updates are absolutely unacceptable and woefully lacking. And, when you try calling Garmin customer support that is just about as bad. First of all, customer support is not available after 5PM M-F. No weekend support is available at all! I guess they are not a big enough company to have 24/7 customer support?! Be prepared for long waits on hold!! Email responses are inadequate and untimely. I was unsuccessful in installing my update and in fact after attempting to install the 2009 update my GPS was rendered unusable. Due to the unsatisfactory instructions and customer support I returned my update to Amazon for a full refund. I honestly don't know how Garmin stays in business with their customer and product support ethic!!!! The only way I could get my GPS working with its old map set was to go to the internet and google for similar problems, which I discovered is quite widespread. After considerable effort I was able to get my GPS working. I may never purchase another Garmin product! Perhaps if the instructions were more complete there wouldn't be so many problems.

"Interesting Device Hindered by Unreliable Software" 2009-09-23
By J. Budzinski

I've been using the 405CX for about 1 1/2 months and have found it to be a device with loads of potential. Sadly however, the full potential cannot be realized due to both unreliable software for the Mac and an unstable web site provided by Garmin. But before going into further detail on the software and web services, let me describe the GPS sport watch.

This GPS watch from Garmin is designed to be used while training to track things like route, speed, pace, time, heart rate, and other items of interest (e.g. if you have a bike, then you can track cadence). In this regard, the watch works pretty well for runners, walkers, and cyclists.

The watch utilizes a built-in GPS to track route and speed. GPS acquisition time is very fast -- typically less than 30 seconds. Tracking accuracy is reasonable -- I'd estimate about +/- 30 ft. Note that it is also able to track altitude, which is something I find useful as a cyclist.

Keep in mind that to track some things, you will need to buy additional accessories like a bike cadence sensor (one for each bike) or a foot pod. So the upfront cost may be substantial depending on your situation. But if you are an exercise junkie, then this may not be much of a concern.

General usability of the watch is OK once you get accustomed to the typical quirks most gadgets seem to exhibit these days. Ease-of-use isn't top notch or anywhere close to it. The watch uses a touch-sensitive bezel that can be both over- and under-sensitive. Nonetheless, you can grow accustomed to the menus and functions after a while and the quirks don't get in the way much on a day-to-day basis. The watch also has some nice customization abilities that can be used to arrange what items to display during workouts.

The interesting part of the watch package is the USB stick that allows you to sync the collected data. The stick plugs into a USB port on your computer and, in theory, automatically (and wirelessly) transfers workout information both to the computer and optionally the Garmin web site. But this is where things get very frustrating (on a Mac at least).

In short, Garmin is really struggling (as of 9/2009) to produce reliable and functional software. I have wasted countless hours dealing with their buggy Ant agent. Frequent Garmin software releases have yet to solve the many issues on both Leopard and Snow Leopard (I have tested on multiple Mac OS X versions). At least 50% of the time, the software fails to transfer properly -- even on repeated attempts. When this happens, there are no diagnostics to indicate the reason for failure. Worse still, the USB device sometimes causes kernel panics (the Mac equivalent of Windows' blue screen of death).

Once you are able to successfully transfer your workout data, then it will also be uploaded to the Garmin Connect web site. This Java-based web site is sometimes overloaded and spews copious error messages due to the situation. Furthermore, Garmin takes the web site completely offline for hours at a time (during North American weekday working hours even). When the site is stable and running, then workout summaries, charts, and reports are at your disposal to track your fitness program. The web site services aren't anything fancy, but they are pretty good and getting better over time.

This ability to track workouts over time online is the primary value proposition of the GPS watch. When the whole thing works, it is very cool and a useful tool for exercise junkies. But the sad truth is that most of the time the potential isn't unleashed and instead you feel cheated by Garmin. And until these problems are solved, then the price of the package just isn't justified by the lousy software and service.

P.S. Other things of that may be of interest to potential buyers of the watch...

Battery life: the watch uses a non-user-replaceable battery (the bane of iPhone and Kindle 2 users) and requires a service fee from Garmin to replace. Battery life is good at about 6-8 hours in practice. Lifetime of the battery remains to be seen.

Standalone Software: the watch also comes with a standalone software product, Garmin Training Software, that can be used to view workout information locally instead of using the Garmin Connect web site. This software provides some of the same functionality as the web site, including maps, but isn't all that polished.

 "Battery life not great" 2009-09-09
By Tracy W. (McDonough, GA United States)
So far this watch has seemed accurate to me and I love the fact that it uploads automatically to my computer when I get near it with the watch. HRM seems accurate even though others state it is not. The only issues I have with it are that it doesn't stay charged very long. At best you might get two days of running out of it before you have to recharge it. I charged mine to 100% yesterday and it's at 93% today without me touching it. My other complaint is that it digs into my wrist bones with the standard band that comes on it. Other than that it's been a great tool for my runs!

"Good watch but you MUST by foot POD" 2009-08-28
By S. Firon (USA)
Before I start a bit of a background about my expedience: I am a web developer hence used to computer user interaction. I had the watch for over a month now and run around 75km with it. I am 43 years of age. My main usage is for running.

My observations are:

1. Hard to read while running. I recently started using reading glasses. I find the 3 field display too small to see and the other options good but I cannot read the text. So if I scroll the page (there are up to 4 pages you customize) it is hard to tell which page is it.

2. The bazzel operation while running is a bit hard.

3. The GPS is totaly off in the vicinity of any obstraction building or trees.

4. The HR measurement is a bit strange. I thought it was working fine until yesterday I run a hard trail through the woods and the GPS was off and also the HR. How they or why are these two connected I am not sure but take a look at my HR here: [...]. My HR is around 161, which is totally wrong. I am trying to figure it out with support.

5. The watch has a problem that is not covered in the manual; if you travel around the world you need to reset the satellites and reacquire in the new location. Otherwise the watch will take a very long time to acquire satellites each time you start running. Not a big deal if you are aware of it.

My conclusion is positive BUT you HAVE to buy a foot pod with this device. Unless you live are in very rural area with no trees and building are spaced really nice from each there. so the real cost is more that just the watch!

PS: just ordered the foot pod.

The heart rate monitor is comfortable and works like a champ. Also, the GPS syncs up quickly and maintained a track log on trails in heavily wooded areas. The Garmin ANT program transfers with no problem and automatically uploads it to the Garmin website. Another unexpected plus is that I have Garmin Roadtrip installed with Citynav 2010 for my motorcycle GPS and the Garmin Training Center software found it and displays the track log on Citynav on my Mac as well, very cool. So far, so good!

This is the same mount type that shipped with my Garmin nuvi when first purchased. It had been stolen from my car in a smash and grab. I was happy to finally replace it and not rely on the little towel set up that I came up with. Within a week the suction mount has ceased to...suck. Or rather, it does suck, but not in the way intended. It just keeps falling off after 3 min of press down. I do not keep it on when I leave the car so as to avoid another theft and excess heat. I am disappointed, but It has to be a "one off" defect as this model mount had worked well in the past. Back to the silly towel improvisation. I have not tried to return this item yet.

Fits perfectly, but just a piece of plastic that will blow off if you have it on a motorcycle. A simple sock will work better and cost less. But, it is a good Garmin product that fits.

Garmin GPS cover

Don't make my error and assume this cover will fit the popular Nuvi series-there are none.

 "Excellent Protection" 2007-05-12

This is what I needed. I use to carry the GPS in many ways not fixed at my car and was very exposed to shocks and dust.

With the cover I'm sure that the screen will be high protected.
