 "GPSMAP 60Cx doesn't cut it" 2009-08-27
By K. Fox (Colorado)
After 4 months with this critter, here's my experience based on the Garmin 'technical advantage', or whatever we consumers like to see in products we want:

* High-Sensitivity GPS Receiver

Fast to acquire satellites, but degrades in position accuracy thereafter, to as much as 0.2 miles, lots of wandering. When compared to my old Magellan and great Streetpilot, this 60Cx likes to take long pauses between refreshing display data (up to 15 seconds once!), varies wildly on speed (eg, 65 to 75 and back, as though confused). And the list goes on.

I compared this 60Cx to a lower end DeLorme: the Delorme took a little longer to acquire its position, but steadied on my fix; whereas the 60Cx acquired fast, then began wandering further and further in various directions.

This product is not what you might want in the backcountry unless you have confidence in your whereabouts or an alternative way to navigate back out.

* Color-Handheld Mapping Ideal For Both Marine & Outdoor Use

Sorry, wildly off on position, I can no longer trust it. Looks pretty though.

* Bright, Sunlight-Readable Color Tft Display

True, easy to see, and display size nice.

* 64 Mb Micro Secure Digital Card For Storage Of Optional Map Detail

Hmmm, I opted for the 2GB SD card out the gate, seems like a good option.

* Fast Usb Connectivity Makes Loading Charts & Maps Quick & Easy

Nope, kept hanging the PC, the software and completely unpredictable. My review of TOPO USA for this unit is not complimentary either.

Manual: in spite of 35 years running everything from mainframes to PCs, and all those electronic gadgets we now take for granted these days, this book is not helpful.

So, while I am delighted with the Garmin Streetpilot, I cannot recommend this 60Cx or the underlying TOPO USA map software, or the SD Topo chip. Buy a map.

 "GPS Garmin" 2009-08-03
By C. Yandre (South Dakota)
I think its to early for a good review on my part. I am a fire fighter with a volunteer organization that uses the Etrex Legend. So I am familiar with that and the Vista HCx in which my paid department has. I learned that with the sensativity on these units from a vehicle they need to be close to the dash window. Knowing that helped me decide on going with the 60Cx with its higher sensitivity. I have to state that its much better as it will pick up sats in the middle of my truck, from inside the house and within our large steel roofed apparatus stalls. I did eventually lose the signal when I went into our sleeping area, which is block walls and concrete second level with metal roof above. Of course your not going to use it there but I wanted to see just how good it was. Pretty impressed with the other area's as stated above. Having the altimeter and area calculations is most helpful with wildland fire fighting as far as orienting and figuring size and location of a fire. Haven't used the 60Cx yet, but I'm sure it will happen soon. I also like the fact that you can use rechargable batteries in the unit. Maybe at a later date after I use the 60Cx hunting this fall I can give more info on the unit. I really can't give it a 5 rating yet, but expect that I probably can in the not so distant future. Hope this helps you making a decision. The price going thur amazon beat two other large outdoor/hunting retail stores. It pays to shop around! Thanks Amazon

 "Remarkable" 2009-07-30
By B. L. OCONNOR (Grants Pass, OR USA)
I'm a member of our county's Search and Rescue team, and I teach land navigation (compass and map skills) and the use of GPS receivers to our members.

For my needs, this unit is the best available.

1. No GPS is worth its weight unless it can track enough satellites (at least 4) to give you a 3D position fix. (A 2D fix on any GPS is unreliable -- be forewarned -- a GPS must calculate its elevation before it can reliably place you on a topo map, electronic or paper).

The 60Cx has an extremely sensitive antenna and I can lock up 4+ satellites from within my home and under dense foliage while in a deep and narrow valley. To me, this is the single most important metric by which a GPS unit is judged. (As a bonus, it locks up quickly.)

Give me reliable numbers (UTM or Lat/Long) and I'll find myself on a paper map (which I carry at all times when I'm in the wilderness).

(I also like the fact that you can increase the sensitivity of this unit even more with an optional car antenna -- which could be used without the car, of course.)

2. It uses two AA batteries, which I far prefer to AAA batteries or some costly, exotic battery pack that will degrade over time. The AA batteries have a long life in this unit, and when they run out you slap in replacements and continue on. (My old Magellan eXplorest 500 used 3 AAAs, which were too short-lived.)

3. It's water-resistant and meets the IPX7 standard. What this means is that it will work after being submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. In other words, it's rain-proof. This is another essential feature for me.

4. You can purchase and install (Mac friendly) 1:24,000 Topo maps on an optional 4 GB Micro HC card (or buy the card with the map already installed). Expensive, yes, but the maps are very good. I installed all of Oregon, most of California and some of Nevada on my card.

I thought such maps would be pure fluff until we did a mock search a few weeks ago and were given directions to our starting point that made no sense. We didn't know for sure where to start, though we had a rough idea of what our area (a trail hand-drawn on a xeroxed copy of a paper map) should look like relative to a stretch of road.

By tracking our movement and projecting that track onto the GPS's topo map, we were able to confirm that we'd searched the correct trail, and we further discovered what the nature of the errors made by our map-makers were. Mistakes of this sort won't happen in the future, which was the whole point of the exercise.

(The down side of getting the CD version of these maps and loading the Micro SD HC cards yourself is that it takes hours to do -- I believe it took me 6 hours or more. But it was worth it.)

5. The tracking feature is easy to use and very useful (see 4. above for one use). You can download your track to National Geographic's TOPO! map series (for Mac and Windows users) and MapTech (for Windows people). For SAR people, this is very useful since it can verify that we've searched the correct area. (You can download your track to the Incident Command's computer, which allows them to verify that you accomplished your mission while providing an electronic record of your search.)

6. You can customize your pages, which I like. While we use UTM for pounding ground, air and water assets use Lat/Long. If you can display both systems on the same page, it makes communicating with them a lot more secure than trying to enter your set-up menu and making the format change from UTM to Lat/Long on that page and then returning to your position page to read the coordinates, which is too much error-inviting screwing around when you're under pressure. I display both UTM and Lat/Long on my map page as a default.

7. Why not spring for the additional $40 -- $60 dollars and get the 60CSx, which has a barometric altimeter (rather than a less-accurate satellite-generated one) and an electronic compass? For us, the ± 70 foot accuracy of the barometric altimeter still isn't good enough (that's almost two 40 foot contour lines), and the electronic compass might be a success from an engineering point of view, but SAR people need the kind of accuracy only a good traditional magnetic compass provides (I use a Type 15, and strongly recommend one, irrespective of manufacturer, to anyone venturing into the wilderness). (Your compass and paper map: don't venture into the backcountry without them . . .)

8. The unit comes with a little plastic belt clip that fastens to a disc-like projection on the back of the GPS unit. You slide the disc into the clip and feel it "click" as it locks in. The GPS will pivot around the disc easily, so it will accommodate you sitting down or moving in strange ways better than a case will. To remove the unit, simply press a button at the top of the clip to unlock it. This arrangement has been thought out very well.

Like I said -- this unit is a jewell.

This one does it all - and does it well. Typical Garmin high quality. Very clear voice providing directions - I like the British lady best - bluetooth connects easily and work well, however FM feature does not (maybe I should read the instructions). Not worth what Grmin would charge but available for much less through Amazon.

"Failed after only 1 year!" 2009-08-19
By Jen78RN (Frederick, MD)
I am so horribly disappointed in this unit. It functioned well for almost exactly a year. It would sometimes direct me on odd routes that I wouldn't have chosen, but I'm not too picky in general, so no big deal. I like the features it offer(ed). The unit was well-cared for, yet several weeks ago it began to be unable to "Aquire Satellites". I went to Garmin's website and performed all the recommended actions (reset, updates) but to no avail. I emailed customer service and they told me there was nothing else they could do unless I had my receipt/proof of purchase. Well, maybe I'm remiss, but if I have an item that I've been using for nearly a year and it's been functioning, then I don't hang on to the receipt/box. Silly me. I can certainly say that if Garmin doesn't repair my unit or credit me towards another, I will be buying my next GPS from one of their major competitors.

If you think you know a better way dont buy this, just get married and let you other half, tell you were to go. Picture viewer looks well with a memory card...battery life is great , don't mount it to the wind shield use the sand bag, much better and does not leave a black ring on the glass telling people that you have a GPS and bang it gone from the car. Local traffic feature ( at a cost) is only good if you live near or in a big city.

 "Great... for a while" 2009-08-13
By L. Docherty (NC United States)
I got the Garmin Nuvi 660 in March 2008. It was a fabulous device and worked perfectly for everything I needed from it. It had a few problems when we were in big cities - I suppose the big buildings made it difficult to get signal and it would occasionally get confused and recalculate.

Over time the calculations took longer and longer. It's gotten very bad recently. The initial calculation takes a very long time. It has almost always has trouble acquiring satellites. I often check google maps for the first 10 minutes of my trip because I know my Nuvi will take a while to pick up a signal. This is pretty unacceptable.

It also lost it's speaker capabilities about two months ago. It crackled for about a day and went silent. It made a few sounds over the next few days but it hasn't spoken since.

Turning it off and on, fully charging, and generally taking good care of it does nothing to correct these situations. I loved it for a while but I'm beginning to look for a new one.

"A major advance, but dangerously flawed" 2009-08-21
By Russell Reid
I have an extensive outdoor history reaching back 40 years, but a much shorter history with GPS devices. My family owns three other Garmins; I also have the Vista HCX.

GPS devices are a classic example of an industry that has been a monopoly for far too long. If ever there was a product poised to be obliterated by better, cheaper competitors, it is Garmin GPS handhelds. If you don't need one just yet, I'd advise waiting. But if you need one, you need one.

This review will be choppy, to get you to the crucial parts fast:

- I did a 6-day, half off-trail, 70 mile, backcountry wilderness hike, wanted a bigger screen and easier operation, bought a Garmin Oregon, here on Amazon.

It failed a day later, with no hard use, in just about the most dangerous way possible: at the first battery change, one of the four battery contacts inside broke in half. Unrepairable, in the field or at home, and the unit is utterly dead. I immediately went out and bought more detailed print maps ( I am not dumb enough to travel without a real map and compass; that's what 40 years teaches you. But I was about to rely on the GPS for 1 to 24,000 scale maps. )

Since I had also bought the 1: 24,000 scale maps on a separate SD card ( the maps that ship with the Garmin are only 1:100,000 which is pretty good, but not enough for off-trail ) I decided to give it another chance. I went to REI and bought another Garmin Oregon.

The expense of the topo maps is one sign of a dying industry; we live in a world where Google maps are free. My iPhone has much better maps, weighs less, has a GPS, costs less... Garmins may soon be dinosaurs. On the other hand, the value of data like "stream" versus "intermittent stream" in the wilderness in August is hard to overstate.

I carried the Oregon for a week. Fundamentally it is a big advance over the older units, but there is enough plain stupidity to give a person pause. Specifics listed below:

- It took an absurdly long time to find me when I started the hike, more than an hour and a half. First several miles of my GPS track is missing.

- The bigger screen is a major advance. Garmin took the iPhone design, and since formerly Garmin might have been the worst user interface ever invented, it is a big improvement.

- Touch-screen is a big help, but it ( the hardware ) works poorly. You can drag the map with your finger, like on an iphone, but you usually have to try 4 times before it notices your finger. Then, more than likely, it will think you touched instead of dragged, put down a big red pin where you did not mean to put down a pin. It is extremely hard, essentially impossible, to drag or touch the point of the pin accurately enough that it will land on a marker ( which will pop up to indicate a place name / information.

- The screen is indeed very difficult to read in some conditions. Unfortunately, the worst case is daylight outdoors, which tends to happen a lot to a GPS. You choose between max brightness while hiding it under your shirt, or zero brightness and direct sun. Neither is good, but you can mostly read it. I had better luck with backlighting off.

- Battery life is fair, but still embarrassing. These are receiving devices only, with lithium batteries, so they ought to last forever with the screen off, but only last 2.5 days or so if you are careful about screen brightness and turn them off at night. Garmin needs new hardware engineers. I was EXTREMELY careful when I changed batteries in the field, due to the broken battery contact mentioned above, but on my second unit had no issues.

- The thing seems to be built like a battleship, but as a result it weighs three times as much as it should, and if one fragile part like a battery contact breaks off, the strength of the casing is useless. Did I say dinosaur earlier? Yes, I guess I did.

- It has a simple screen-lock feature that would be perfect except that it is utterly defeated by stupid design. You press the power button once, and touch "lock screen". After that, unless you unlock the screen, it ignores bumping things in your pack, EXCEPT that bumping or touching the screen TURNS ON THE BACKLIGHT. Now, how dumb is that on a device where battery life is both crucial and inadequate?

- It is a bit hard to find things in the menu system, having been designed by Origami experts, but it is far better than older Garmins in that regard. An example:

- On default settings, at a zoom level where the preinstalled topos are visible instead of the 1:24000 purchased ones, the map has so many little rectangular elevation tags ( 10,231 ft ), in opaque white boxes, that you barely can use the map. There is no doubt a way to turn 'em off, and when I am done with this review I will go search for it, but in six days in the field I never found it.

Summary of my advice: If it weighed half as much ( backpacker speaking! ) and cost a third as much, you should definitely buy one. For the moment, unless your need is compelling, you should not buy this generation, but hope that they read these reviews. I work for a major hardware / software company that makes things, so I know they read them. The negative reviews don't get passed along as much as they should :)

If your need is compelling, ask a lot of questions about the battery contacts. I don't know if the Colorado is more robust, having never owned one. The bigger screen is a huge help.

 "Garmin 400t" 2009-08-12
By J. Merrittt (California)
Purchased this unit 1 month before a planned trip. Had to get replacement from Garmin as original unit had problems. Garmin support express mailed a replacement for which I thank them.

I don't recommend the downloaded maps. I had no success with a number of attempts to download and install. Just pay the few extra dollars and get the DVD and you will do yourself a favor. The 24K West maps were good and I am glad I got the DVD version.

I was using the Oregon 400t on horseback and the screen was sometimes very hard to see. To plan the ride for any distance ahead while riding over steep and rough ground while in motion was more difficult than with the E trex that I also carried. Several time I needed to stop and dismount in order to find a route passable on horseback. The screen is sometimes difficult to read in bright light with polarized glasses.

Despite the screen issues I am happy with the 400t which is the 5th gps unit I have owned. Garmin tech support was also helpful.

 "Highly inaccurate" 2009-08-09
By Peter Simon (lost in space)
To quote a five star reviewer, "...the Oregon 400t is the most versatile, customizable, and flexible handheld GPS I have seen." I agree completely. In addition to its GPS capabilities it has a barometer, a compass, the ability to add a heart rate monitor and cadence capabiity, and will even tell you the tides and the best times to hunt and fish! It also has the nicest touchscreen since the iPhone. Unfortunately, it is the most inaccurate GPS I have ever used, never coming closer than 70 feet to the actual location. This makes it virtually useless for geocaching.

Since it comes with pre-loaded topo maps (with 3d view) and a 16 hour battery life, it would be perfect for a backpacker. Accuracy is not nearly as critical for that application. However, it's not much use in a car, since it lacks voice (which you think could be added when used with the optional car kit, as is the case with my old, old Street Pilot 2820), and, although weatherproof, the screen is too small to use on a motorcycle. It would be okay for a bicycle but perfectly adequate bike GPSs can be found for a lot less money.

I had really high hopes for it, but due to the fact that it is more inaccurate than any other GPS I have ever owned I returned mine after giving it a really fair trial of daily use for two weeks.

"can't see screen in daylight" 2009-08-08
By David Smith (Penn Valley, PA USA)
Despite some favorable reviews I do not think that this device is adequate for the purpose it is supposed to perform. The LCD screen is too dim. I cannot see anything on it in daylight. It works fine in my closet but I know my way around the closet. At night and at dusk it seems ok, but mid day in bright indirect light the screen is barely visible. There is not enough contrast between the background and the roads for example. No matter what other attributes the device may have, at least when loaded with topo maps, I find it unusable and will be returning it. My old Garmin GPS 12 map has much better screen usability. The only reason I am looking for a new handheld is that Gramin no long supports the GPS 12 -- I cannot update the basemap and the memory space for downloaded detailed map segments is very small.

I had to replace my old GPS and went with this one. Took it out on a day of Geocaching and it was right on. Better then my old Garmin GPS. Yes the screen does kind of suck in the sun but all the other features out way the screen. Ive used it at work too and found it easy to use while driving and getting from point A to point B is great. I recommend a 4g card for the unit and it is more then enough space for this. The topographic maps are great too.

"Not a user freindly interface" 2009-08-18
By P. Duffy
Using this thing is like using a puzzle. The user interface is horrible. Sure it tracks where you are fine within 150ft and gives you nifty elevation plots (with less than accurate numbers despite setting it up each time from a known elevation)but it's user interface to plan a trip and insert waypoints and manage a trip are horrible. Using the software is a cumbersome confusion of function keys that have no explanationa nd the help function for the software might as well be in another language. If you want to set up a new waypoint out on the trail away from your computer it'll take a good 10 minutes just to find the location if you're more than a few miles away. maybe my hard times are from thsi being my first GPS device but overall I have more trouble setting it up to map a route than I get joy from using it. If it had the option to run a dumbed down or more basic operation interface through the software that would eb great. I'm sure the software that comes with it now is grewat for those already familiar with GPS devices for the most part but for me the software is the enigma to setup and use fully. The device takes a long time to draw maps and eats a set of energizer NiMH rechargable batteries in 6hrs if I'm checking the thing a couple times an hour for a couple minutes.

"Can only view one saved trail. Missing a lot of older features." 2009-06-30
By 30ish (New York USA)
The older 60csx allowed you to view multiple saved trails at a time. This does not. The 60csx allowed you to modify the color and thickness of your track lines. This does not

So if you are going to a place that you have explored differently, with the 60csx you could see all of your prior tracks like a trail map. With the Colorado, you can only see one prior saved track. Its like looking at a map and only being able to see one road and no alternatives if you want to go a different way.

Also, while the color and thickness doesn't sound like much of an issue, the current tracks shows as a thin black line, which is similar to all of the other thin black lines on the map. The prior track is a huge thick line, much thicker than it needs to be. With the 60csx, you could adjust both.

Finally, there is no cover available to protect this product. There is a hard case, but most people want a cover that allows you to see the map whhile using the unit in less than perfect conditions. The 60csx had sone.

Accuracy is good, however if this product was not $500.00 and these items did not exist in prior versions, I would not care nearly as much.

 "Not worth the money" 2009-06-26
By Tracy-ilalkyrn (Kentucky, USA)
I purchased this item as gift for my husband and he was so dissapointed in the performance of the software that we sent it back after 1 week. It is not possible to map trails in advance or get estimation of the distance to be traveled. The unit maps only as the crow flies, which can be done with a paper map, which by the way never freezes up and stops working.

However on a positive note, the construction of the unit seemed pretty durable, of coarse with it freezing up we didn't much bother having it out where it could get dropped. The GPS location was accurate and fairly quick when not frozen up. even though the altimeter was difficult to calibrate and inaccurate initially it did work eventually.

the manual was less than helpful. Please note that you must get the city navigator SD card if you want to map a route on the road. The topo map shows streets but it will only map a route without the SD card as the crow flies.

If you do not have lots patience for randomly thumbing through the on screen menu's to try and operate the unit coupled with a innate ability to be computer savy, then save your money.

 "Amazing Device!" 2009-06-23
By Fredric Smith (Princeton, NJ)
I am amazed at the new Garmin Colorado 400T. It is nice, feels good and does not look cheap. I use regular batteries and it has a long enough life for one day being full on, and display at maximum brightness. Is is not 100% accurate as when I was walking in New York city my path (trail) was not marked by a straight line, but instead with curvy lines that followed the streets I walked on. It did not lose reception anywhere, even when in building 'canyons'. Another interesting part is that when on the train to New York it kept reception at all times unless I was in tunnel before the city. Lastly when I was flying from Florida to New Jersey I figured I would try device to see what it found. It picked my location while I was sitting in an aisle seat, kept track of flight, and showed plane airspeed. I am very happy with this unit and now take it everywhere. It is interesting to know where you are all of the time!

 "Totally Satisfied" 2009-08-02
By Jack L. Hayes
I received my Garmin nuvi 205, 3.5 inch GPS in a timely manner. All was fine. I have since taken a trip to California and used the unit in my rental car. The unit performed fine and as expected. The price was right and the only advice I can offer is that is someone is going to use their GPS frequently, I recommend that consideration be given a unit that announces the street name. My unit does not and I knew this at time of purchase so it was not a concern since I will only use this unit occasionally.

I do have one negative comment. The instructions with my unit said that I would receive the latest map download if I attempted to obtain the download in 60 days from first usage. I attempted the download during the first week of purchase and received a message that I was not eligible. I do not understand why, and have not pursued this matter any further as my unit is only for occasional use.

 "great model, exceeds expectations" 2009-07-24
By Chatty Cathy
I recently purchased the nuvi 205 because I wanted a quality GPS with basic functions for an upcoming vacation. It turned out to be a great choice.

Her the pros:

- The unit calculates routes lightning fast, much fast than older nuvi models

- The speaker is loud and clear. In fact, I had to turn down the volume to 50% for my normal commute driving

- The windshield suction mount works well, big improvement to older units

- I did not miss the verbal street announcements at all. The next turn is clearly listed on the screen. I am glad I saved the money.

- The speed limit and current speed indicators are neat

The cons:

- The map database seems to have some issues. This is probably not particular to this unit.

- It seems to lose the destination when adjusting options, such as the volume. This may be my error though, since I never read the manual and was operating it while driving.

Easy to use out of the box. Quick battery charge and you are ready to go. Simple to use and requires no manual to do the basics. I also bought the portable friction dash mount which works very well.

Great system. I had the same model prior to leaving it in a rental car, so I purchased another one. Needless to say I remember to keep the lock key on the Garmin now when not in use.

 "Easy to set up" 2009-08-16
By E. IVERSON (Eagan, MN)
I just got mine, and had it all set up in a couple minutes in the parking lot. Nice compact size. Easy to use. The screen is not quite bright enough in direct sunlight, but still readable. The arrow and car icon that show you where you are, are a bit too large for the map in zoomed out mode. Other than that, it works great.

 "BEST PRODUCT, BEST PRICE" 2009-07-23
By J. Gooding (Canton, OH)
You can not beat this GPS. We use ours all the time and are extremely happy with it. I love the features-you can save destinations to your "favorites" and can search local shopping areas or restaurants. I also like how if you go off course it will say "recalculating" and will point you in the new direction. My Mom's more expensive GPS will not do this.

I highly, highly recommend this product. For the price, you simply cannot beat it!

 "Wiring/recharging issues" 2009-07-14
By David A. Lamb
My Nuvi 200 survived the initial 1-year warranty. A few months later, the power started shorting out. Evidently, the minor torque created by the cord is enough to break the internal connection between the power cord and the battery. I opened the little bugger up and noticed that the only connection to the battery is through a small, metal cage which sits upon the charger. This is connected to the main body on one side and not very well. The single point of connection had been severed due to the simple swing of the power cord!

I don't recommend this product.

If you are looking for a GPS, please consider one of the products that has a much stronger power connection. While this one should last the warranty, it will likely break soon after with limited usage. The Garmin website allows people to ship an ensured package back to the dealer (shipping roughly $10-20) and have it repaired for $50. Not worth it in my opinion. I'm going to try some surgery on it, but will likely end up buying a different product.

"the best handheld GPS that I know" 2009-05-29

This is the best handheld GPS that I know! The battery which is great because it has a safe load for a long time depending on their size. I recommend buying now with the equipment 1 memory card that can be burned to the maps. The size of the display is very good, very large can show many details. I did the crossing of Angra dos Reis to Rio de Janeiro at night and feel much confidence and traffic in the middle of many islands with the orientation of the maps that I loaded in the GPS!

 "I was not impressed." 2008-10-17
By Hoffman
This claims to be "perfect for land or water" in its description, but that is not the case at all. I took this deep-sea diving (I was hunting for monsters), and as soon as I got underwater the unit completely stopped working! I called the customer service, and they said it was "user error". Me and my new monster pets are very upset.

 "Outstanding Garmin product...as usual" 2008-08-01
By B. Bates (Santa Fe, NM USA)
Garmin has to be the best GPS available. It is the only one I buy, and this is my fifth unit. It is fast to aquire satellite data, and will position you within feet of where you are. I would like to have the option to increase the size of the font, but that is not available to the extent I need for motorcycle use. Rugged and reliable, if just a little over price; but then you are paying for the Garmin name. Software was easy to install on my GPS.

"4 Stars for a great GPS unit... 5 Stars if add-ons were standard" 2008-07-17
By S.J. Diggs (Wakefield, MA)
I use my 276C exclusively for boating, and it performs admirably. Once you figure out how to navigate the menu screens, you can take advantage of some very powerful options which you would only expect to see on higher end GPS models. Overall, I am very pleased - setup was a breeze, never a problem with position refresh, battery life is good, data is accurate, signal strength is fantastic in my boating area, and I really like the fact that nearly every screen is customizable.

However, in order to take advantage of the 276C's many IMPORTANT features you should plan on spending (quite) a few more $$$. For starters, the marine base map is garbage for those who boat offshore or cruise the coast. I wasn't expecting much in the marine base map department going into the purchase, but for those that are expecting this, plan to pony up an additional $150 for a (proprietary) data card which gives you the detail you'll need to navigate the waters safely. Also, the absence of a 12v adaptor is a real miss. Given the unit is marketed as "portable", why Garmin opted to not include one is a mystery to me. So, plan on spending another $25 for that. If you plan on using this GPS for boating I would recommend the display cover... another $20.

One of the more powerful feature I plan to utilize in the near future is the sonar function. To enable this feature, you'll need Garmins analog scanner (GSD-21) and a suitable transponder. One other feature I enjoy is the mapsource software that came with the unit. From this, you are able to upload your trips to the computer. From there you can analyze your trip - it even interfaces with google maps to provide a real-life view of your excursion. Pretty cool stuff.
