 "It's OK" 2009-09-16
By Marcel T. Manzano
It does what I want it to do. I don't give it 5 stars because it has frozen on me 3 times already. To fix that, I have to shut it off and restart it which is not what you want to be doing while driving. It's also missing some streets and major businesses. i.e. a Wal-Mart Supercenter that's been up almost 2 years doesn't show up.

 "Garmin sucks" 2009-09-11
By Rick Delmonico (Frankfort KY)
I bought a refubished nuvi 680 on here. It arrived on time but with a 2008 map and I could not register it.

When I called Garmin they told me to fax the invoice in order to prove I had purchased it. They also told me that they might not upgrade the map.

Their customer sevice is really bad and I am convinced that this lady could care less if I ever buy another Garmin product. I probably won't. They suck.

I don't care how good a unit his is I will not tolerate this kind of incompetence from any company. Why wasn't the map updated? Why wasn't the previous registration canceled? Are these people idiots?

 "Couldn't be happier" 2009-09-09
By G. Edwina Green (San Diego, CA, USA)
The unit I received was in brand new condition with everything working perfectly, except it didn't have the 2009 maps loaded.

Registered without problems with Garmin, tried to download maps but that took forever as I only have a satellite connection and after hours the connection was lost. Contacted Garmin by phone and I had to wait about 15 minutes on hold, but I just put the call on speakerphone and did some other things while I waited. The rep couldn't have been more helpful or understanding - he mailed me a disc of the updates completely free of charge! They loaded with no problems. This is the second Garmin GPS I've bought (the other is the 660) and I love them both. When I got the 660 it was my first experience with a GPS and Garmin were extremely helpful then answering all my naive questions. Now I'm definitely a dedicated Garmin fan.

"All the Bells & Whistles" 2009-08-28
By Steve K. (Chicago Area, IL)
A month has past since I started using this refurbished Garmin Nuvi. The value for price paid exceeeds my expectations. For many years I've needed to find clients houses in the dark and the nearly pinpoint street address accuracy guides me there effortlessly. I had been using Pharos Ostia GPS thru my pocket PC until the Chicago map file vanished in cyberspace and I needed a replacement device. Inputing of destination is much easier with the Nuvi since it narrows down choices with picking the town before the street name which saves me a lot of guessing or picking off a long list with names like Maple St, Ave, Dr, Lane, Ct? and then finding a town that matches. The non-qwerty keyboard has taken some getting used to and that is one thing that could be improved. The 3D view with upcoming streets and the voice depiction of street names makes me want to use this even when I know exactly where I am going. The added features of Bluetooth phone, MP3 player, Photo viewer, and MSN Direct Weather, Traffic, Movies & Gas Prices has been very useful. When my 2010 Equinox arrives I will be using this for a number of cross-country drives I have planned still this year. That will have an aux. in jack so I don't have to use the FM transmitter which can be a bit staticy, All in all, I don't believe I could be more satisfied with my purchase and the money I saved getting a refurbished unit.

 "Internal Antenna Fails" 2009-08-03
By R. Demers (NH, USA)
I've had the nuvi 680 gps for about 2 years now, seemed to work fine getting a signal until recently. Would take 10 minutes or longer to grab a signal, then would lose it after awhile. I searched the internet and found out that I should update the software on the gps so we downloaded and updated using the garmin web updater. The gps almost completely stopped picking up a signal from satellites after updating. After searching the internet some more, someone suggested stripping a twist tie and putting the wire into a hole in the antenna. This seems to work. Apparently these devices have a defect in the internal antenna and they completely stop working.

My parents have the 660 version and they are starting to experience issues with getting a signal as well, theirs is a year old.

The MSN traffic services does pick up traffic problems but does not properly rate the traffic backup time so you are on your own whether you should avoid the backup or not.

 "Garmin 680 is great!" 2009-07-19
By Gregory A. Miller (Indiana)
Love this GPS. Even reconditioned it worked like new. I use it a lot for the MP3 player and though directions are not always accurate I have not found many that are perfect. Many types of vehicles, voices and views. I love the bluetooth features except have not been able to sync my phonebook to GPS; other than that it has been great.

"Garmin Nuvi 680 Gps Navigator Mp3 Player" 2009-07-19
By B. Y. & E.Y (Denver Co, Usa)
PROS 1 Good navigation with easy to read screen and virtualy no glare I personaly believe the map graphics are better in this series than the later 700 and up series.

2 Voice prompts at least with The British English voice Prompts are easy to understand and helpful when driving. UPDATES have made this thing better at warning you BEFORE you pass your turn.

3 MP3 player is able to sort music by genere, album, play all or random and sound quality is quite good. Portable so you can walk or bike to your location and use internal speaker or use of headphones. 6 hours of battery life MP3 only no GPS or about 3 1/2 to 4 with GPS on.

4 SD expansion slot will allow you up to a 4 gig HC card expanding it's memory or buying expansions such as language translation cards, Book cards or even Parks & Recreation cards for your local state. Built In POI's like major stores or major parks State or Federal (Nation Wide) able to just insert a city name with out having to pick a physical address and also has others like restraunts and local entertainment choices.

5. On top of all that you are able to use GPS Cordinates to find obscure locations with limited or no roads (you will need a reg map that has gps cordinates) and will get you there with no problems great for those hard to find hiking trails.

6 MSN Traffic cord is nice for finding the cheapest gas prices closet to your location or even checking the local movies. The traffic part is only ok but does help out slightly for picking a route (*** warning don't use the Avoid traffic option though it will re-route you for even a 1 to 5 min delay to surface streets which will usually make you take much more time than if you just stuck to the route you were on. Still will warn you visually and Audiably with that option off so if it's a long delay you can still hit the detour button.

Able to add 1 extra route on your way to your original destination but UNABLE to do multiple routes and seperate them by closet to furthest only a minor grip though.

CONS 1. Will do 4 gig Sd cards even the high capacity even though not advertised the draw back with high capacity cards is that you won't get the advertised 1000 songs you will be able to only do around 870 to 880 anything over that it won't read the songs above that number.

2 No multiple routes as mentioned above only 1 insert point.

3 FM reciever is good depending on how large of a city your in too big Denver Portland Seattle ect you might have trouble getting a clear unclutterd channel but you do have the Plug in option like Ipod or other Mp3 players have your stereo just needs the 2.5mm jack.

4. Does not allways take you the quickest route but it does allways get you there though.

5. If your not updating your maps every 2 years or so newer roads done in the past 3 years will not be on your unit but garmin is getting quicker at keeping their map upgrades more up to date.

Highly reccomend much better than TOM TOM or Megelan or a lap top in your car.

"Dangerous to use on roads" 2009-06-18
By Stan Matofu (McKinney, TX)
Garmin 680 is just dangerous to use.

1. For strange reason, Garmin decided not to give any intruction about the next turn until 0.7 mile ahead. WHY? Why not 2 or 3 miles ahead so I have enough time to get to the best lane? 0.7 is for 60mph speed. For lower speeds it is 0.2.

2. There is no large left/right turn sign on the screen like on most GPS devices. You have to look at the map and your route to figure out the next maneuver. Again, the next maneuver is not clear, you have to figure it out.

3. You can see text like "Southeast on ramp" which are totally useless becuase there is no compass/heading in the routing mode.

4. Instruction at the top switches from current street to some general directions to the next maneuver. It is confusing to find which is which. What is the purpose of it?

5. There are some errors like a) the small turn map disappears after the turn, it should show the next turn, b) map doesn't center on your car position etc.

6. Close to 0 (zero) ability to customize the unit for your preferences.

I feel it's a little too slow and also take me to the wired direction... The calculation system hang pretty often... take more than 2minutes to search the places... but I'm doing fine with it just take longer time to deal with it.
