 "Excellent Case-Excellent Price" 2009-05-31
By Keith Patton (Morganton,N.C.)
I purchased a Garmen Nuvi 260w and I wanted a small case that the unit would fit into snugly. This case protects the unit, has slots for 3 SD cards, and some extra room for maybe your power cable. It also comes with an attachment next to the zipper so that you can hook the case to your belt or purse, ect. This little case fit all my needs perfectly. If you make a stop on your selected route to go into a store to shop, you can remove the 260w quickly, put it in this case, hook it on your belt, and go wherever you need to in complete confidence that your unit won't be stolen when you return to your vehicle. And, at around [...] bucks, who can complain.

 "Sturdy Case, curved back not shown in pictures" 2009-01-13

Case seems well made and fits my Garmin 755t without issue. However I was looking for a small, sleek case only to discover this one has a domed back which I presume is to fit the older GPS modules. For the 4.3" rectangular Garmin this is just a waste of space.

 "If you carry your Nuvi around with you, you will want this battery" 2008-12-09
By Timothy B. Riley (San Antonio, TX USA)
I bought this battery to go with my Nuvi 500. I already own a Nuvi 750 but this battery is one of the reasons that I bought the 500. Unlike most other Nuvi's (and most other automotive GPS receivers) the 500 and the 550 have a user interchangeable battery (the 880 does as well). If you use your GPS primarily in your car this is not a big deal. However, my favorite thing about the Nuvi's is that I can carry them in my pocket as I explore a new city or ever a park or wildlife area. I even have a bicycle mount for it. My 750 only gave me about 3 hours of use before it had to be recharged. Although I am not getting the "up to 8 hours" of power that the manufacturer suggests for the 500 I am getting a solid 5 hours of use with the backlight set at 50%. If I still want more, that's where this battery comes in. A quick switch and I have another 5 hours of GPS guidance. Thank you Garmin for adding this feature to your latest GPS units!

 "Perfect solution" 2009-09-10
By CRL (Peoria, Illinois, USA)
This case is well padded to protect the GPS device, yet is still small enough to put in a cargo pocket, a purse or hang on a belt loop. A GPS device is too expensive to leave unprotected and this case does the job. We use our Garmin for both traveling and geocaching, so it is handled a lot. Highly recommend this item.

One of the best cases to protect and carry expensive electronic equipment that I have ever owned. A must addition for 500 or 550 owners.

 "Good Little Case" 2008-11-05
By KC (Lansing, MI USA)
Bought this with my Nuvi 500. It is made of hard synthetic material that smells like new shoes. The only reason it gets 4/5 is because they could've made one side toucher to protect the touchscreen. (or the whole case to protect from falling) The case material is fairly rigid and will protect against scratches and a few bumps but it is not going to save your Nuvi 500 from a fall onto a rock or what have you. However there is no better option on the market that i can see, so this case will keep your Nuvi 500 out of the elements and give it a nice sheltered home. The inside of the case has two elastic bands on the sides that only allow it to open half way before stretching, not sure if i like that or not. I am satisfied with my purchase, however.

 "A nice case, but it could have been better." 2008-11-04
By Timothy B. Riley (San Antonio, TX USA)
I own and have owned quite a few GPS receivers including a recently purchased Garmin Colorado 400t. I bought my new Nuvi 500 (my 3rd Nuvi) as a cross-over GPS, one that I could walk around with, bike with, use to geocachache, as well as use it in a car. This is what the 500 and the 550 were designed for (according to Garmin's website). I had hoped that Garmin might have designed a great case for it, as they did for the Colorado series. Alas, this was not the case (pun fully intended).

The GOOD:

* It's lightweight

* It is very compact

* It seems to be good at keeping out the elements

* It's priced right

The BAD

* For a GPS that is billed as being field-worthy this case has a zipper (making it harder to get into), not a latch as does the Colorado case

* It has no belt loop, mount or strap to allow one to easily carry it in the field. The Colorado case has several mounting options, this case has only as tiny string on the zipper

* It has no storage options, not even for an extra battery

I am very happy with the GPS unit itself but the case could have been designed to augment the function of the device, not just hold it. This may have been designed with all Nuvi's in mind, which would explain it's generic features. However, a waterproof, multifunctional GPS like the 500 (and it's brother, the 550) deserve a case of their own.

 "Good price, great Performance" 2009-08-26
By Physicist (DC Suburbs)
I have had this GPS for over a month now. It works very well. It replaced a much older GPS of another brand. It cost almost half as much and does much more. It is nice for walking as well as driving. It fits in a shirt pocket. I recommend spending a bit more for this model than the less loaded model.

 "good all-around gps" 2009-08-24
By Jared A. Smith
I've used my nuvi 500 for mototcycling (with RAM mount), geocaching, and in the car. It's been on the bike in driving rain without problem.

The Bad: Only car charging cable included. A standard, inexpensive USB cable will transfer data with a computer...but won't charge the unit. Lack of magnetic compass hurts geocaching capabilities. No headphone jack. Maps don't differentiate between a good gravel road and a dirt path that requires 4wd and a winch. POI's are missing many long-standing establishments. Even after doing all the auto updates, mine still doesn't speak street names. Where's the manual?

The Good:

It has saved my bacon on several occasions and despite some shortcomings, I'd buy the same unit again if I lost this one. You can buy GPS units that will do any one job better....but it's tough to find one that will do a passable job at all of them.

I would not know what to do without my Garmin. I get lost in a shoe box and I tell you it's a big stress reliever to go places and not have to worry about getting lost. Very easy to use and nice bright screen. I would highly recommend this product to anyone.

 "A Crossover GPS Device with Pretty Good Performance" 2009-08-10
By T. Chan (USA)
PROS:

1) A crossover type GPS device works for driving, hiking, boating etc. After updating its latest software, you will have an additional usage mode: Scootering.

2) It has longer battery life comparing with other nuvi models. This is good for you to carry it around without worrying too much about running out of battery.

3) Weather sealing design is good for normal out door activities.

4) It has been accurate and reliable so far during my driving and hiking.

5) It has very good satellite acquisition capability. The satellite lock time for hot start normally takes less than 5 seconds. It takes about 45 seconds for cold start. More impressively, all these happened inside a brick ranch house, not in an opening area.

6) Nuvi 500 multi-language supports both display menu and "turn by turn" audio instructions. Switching between different languages is quick and easy. It is well suit for traveling overseas or a family with people that have different language preferences.

CONS:

1) The device does not come with the latest map and the latest operating system. To get free map update, you need to register this GPS device on internet, and to download approximately 3 GB files. It toke me more than 4 hours to download and to do installations. (I have cable modem internet connectivity.) You can pay $10 to ask GARMIN sending you DVD instead of downloading maps from internet, but you have to register on the internet first. As indicated by other reviewers, you need to have a USB cable to do internet registration. The USB cable does not come with this GPS device.

2) Right out of the box, "speaks street names" does not work. Even after your registration on the internet, and after automatically updating nuvi 500 operating system, it still not work. you have to go to GARMIN web side to download languages that support TTS. I think this should be done automatically during system update. At least, after software update, it should give a message to let customers know what they need to do to let "speaks street names" work. Currently, there is nothing.

3) Disconnecting from PC does not work well. After I selecting "eject USB device" from PC, nuvi 500 power does shut down. However, if I do not disconnect USB cable between PC and GPS device quickly, it will start itself and connect with PC again, which is really annoying.

4) The software user interface design is for GPS devices that have flat borders. Nuvi 500 has a higher border around touch screen. This higher border results in difficulty to press icons near the border. I do not have fat fingers, but I miss-selected icons several times near the border.

5) Some GARMIN maps for foreign countries do have problems. From what I known, the earlier version of "Garmin City Navigatorfor Detailed Maps of China" has about 500 meters offset. This offset also existing in Hong Kong and Macau maps that comes with "Garmin City Navigator Southeastern Asia" product. If you use nuvi 500 with those maps in China, you will get lost. It is shamed that GARMIN selling those maps without checking their usability. However, this is not nuvi 500 design or manufacture fault.

Generally say, this GPS device is strong in performance. Even nuvi 500 suffers with GARMIN software, I still give it four stars, because it works well in USA, which is this product package designed for (preloaded street maps for lower 48 states and U.S. topographic maps). Further more, those software issues are fixable, if GARMIN want to do so. For now, overseas travelers should check map accuracy before traveling to avoid headache. One simple way to check GPS map is comparing GPS map with Google map at the same coordinate. There are lot of GPS map vendors that support GARMIN GPS device, which provide alternatives instead of using GARMIN maps. For me, it is worth to do extra work to deal with map issues, such as using third party maps, as long as the device hardware is fast, accurate and reliable. I will travel to Hong Kong soon; and I will use maps that were not sold by GARMIN.

 "Terrible customer service" 2009-08-06
By Kevin M. Mcnichols (Pittsburgh)
I just got a nuvi 500 and I would never buy another Garmin product. Garmin doesn't include an owner's manual- you have to download one. To register the product you have to go to Garmin and download a plug-in to your browser. The downloaded manual sucks. They don't include an AC adapter. As if you didn't pay enough already, they are happy to sell you one. The car charger provided doesn't work in my car, and the manual instructs me to purchase a 3A high blow fuse to replace the fuse in the adapter they provided. (I'm sure they have 3A high blow fuses at the 7-11 down the street.) Customer service didn't respond to my e-mail questions, and don't even bother calling them. The recording advised me that there would be a 35 minute wait for a customer service representative. (I wonder how Garmin's CEO likes listening to 35 minutes of Muzak.) Better you stay with the phone on your ear for an hour then they cut profits by hiring enough help. With the way Garmin disregards your time and the inconveniences they heap upon you, they really don't deserve future customers.
