 "Excellent Purchase" 2009-09-14
By B. T. Corneto
I bought this Garmin as a surprise for my oldest daughter. I already own a c340, and enjoy it immensely; She has a reputation for getting lost in heavy traffic, and has been quietly coveting MY GPS for 2 years.

All reports from her end are glowing - she no longer gets lost driving from Northern California to Central California, rarely misses an offramp or fuel stop, and has one less thing to worry about on long trips to unfamiliar areas.

 "Don't Trust Garmin" 2009-06-13
By Kenneth J. Pennington (Washington, DC)
The current price for the C340 is great --- I paid $800 in Jan. 2006. However, buyers beware: Garmin no longer supports this GPS. I wanted to up-date the maps (June 2009). Customer service told me that 1. I had to buy an up-date made for their new line of GPS for $120 (check the current price of the unit) and 2. the up-date would not fit into the memory of the C340. Garmin no longer provided up-dated maps for the Street Pilot. Customer service cheerfully informed me that the solution would be to buy several SD memory cards to which sectional maps of the USA could be downloaded. As I drove from place to place I could insert a new card into the unit. Aside from the inconvenience and awkwardness of carrying a half dozen cards around, their "solution" (I don't think their engineers went to MIT) means that you cannot plot a trip from Washington, DC to Chicago or anywhere else outside the region where you live. I will never buy another Garmin for my car or for my boat. Like Detroit, Garmin has forgotten an important fact: they have competitors and brand loyalty disappears when the customer is stiffed.

I'd been around my friend's Garmin's before so had a very good idea of what I was purchasing. After having used this GPS for a few road trips and around my local town, its proved to be an extremely valuable tool. From getting you from A to B and finding you food, hotels, etc on the fly, it's certainly worth the money.

"Poor Customer Service makes Garmin a no-no" 2009-05-05
By Nirvana Boy (VA, USA)
The c580 is an adequate product in terms of GPS capabilities but suffers from the following problems:

(MAJOR Issue)

1) Poor Customer Support (Read - if its breaks - you're on your own)

The suction mount on my GPS stopped working (GPS would fall off) and I promptly called the number given on the manual to get it replaced under warranty. The lady who picked up the phone initially asked me what the problem was and said "ahem...let em transfer you to the auto dept". The auto dept had a pre-recorded message that said "All agents are missing. Pls accept to wait at least *30* minutes" - which is ridiculous. My call was never picked up and I eventually gave up. Needless to say - I'll never buy Garmin again.

Other problems (minor)

2) Bulky Design: This is a older generation of GPS. Look for other families (i.e. not c500 series) if you would like a sleek/lightweight device.

3)Slow Startup: Often takes > 1 minute. During cloudy days - can take longer.

 "Big disappointment" 2009-03-25
By Ozgard (Freehold, New Jersey USA)
First off this is my 3rd Garmin GPS. I purchased a C340 for myself and my girlfriend and then after reading some of the positive reviews for the C580 I decided to purchase it and give my C340 to my daughter. What a mistake that was. I can't really knock the unit while it works. But after 6 months of usage my original unit decided to die. I tried to power it on and it was just dead. Now comes the part that I dreaded and that was to contact the Garmin support. I called around 4pm one day and was given an estimated wait time of 30 minutes which turned out to be 60+. Ok so not everyone can estimate. I got a guy who obviously was having a bad day and proceeded to describe my problem. I was then asked to do several tasks that I had already tried a number of times. With the same result. He then gave me a RMA and asked me to return my "new" unit for repair. I received the replacement "Factory Refurbished" unit about a week after and wasn't too keen on it being a refurb but gave it a chance. The GPS worked fine but when I tried to get the bluetooth function working it would display "Enabling Bluetooth" then die. I would then have to power down the unit to get out of the screen. I called the Garmin support line again and waited about 40 minutes for a tech. He then asked for my email and sent me a few things to try and ways to reset the device. I downloaded several versions of the software for bluetooth and all of them failed. A version of the bluetooth firmware actually caused the unit to digress even further. I contacted Support again and he gave me a RMA and asked me to send the unit back....again.

I got another "Factory Refurbished" unit sent to me about a week and a half later. This time it was dead out of the box. I actually started laughing. The Garmin product support was worse than anything I had ever dealt with and that goes for Microsoft or even Verizon cause when you get those clowns they actually help you. It took me close to an hour to get another real person on the phone. This time Katy was the rep. I explained all that had happened and that I was ready to take all of my Garmin products and run them over with my truck(I also have a handheld Garmin Etrex Vista). She asked me to do another reset of the unit and when nothing happened she told me to hold on and talked to her supervisor. When she go back on she asked me to send the unit back to Garmin and that they were going to send me a "New" Garmin Nuvi 780 as a replacement for the C580 and for my going through hell over the past 6 weeks. Its 3/25/09 and I have to send back the unit, which they're paying for this time, by the way. I also have to have them transfer a "Lifetime Map" Update License I purchased for the C580. That should be fun ya think? I'll keep you posted.

Absolutely love this! Its not that fancy sleek,in-pocket,cycle riders GPS..but its more than that in every sense. Agreed its bulky, but it's the best at the basic features a GPS should have. I love the bluetooth feature, and able to make calls to any destination, hotel, movie theater with the little 'call' button that picks up your bluetooth and makes calls as if its an i-phone.  "Great Unit, But..." 2009-09-29
By Book Doc (NH, USA)
NO PHONE CALLS THROUGH STEREO!

I am happy with the Garmin, but one of the reasons I selected this unit was because in the Amazon product description the unit is described as being able to broadcast traffic alerts AND CELL PHONE CALLS through the car's FM radio. This was an enormous attraction to me as I drive a convertible, & hand-free speakers just don't cut it with the top down. Well, the description is wrong (or WAS, if Amazon has corrected it.) The unit will NOT do this. It IS Bluetooth, and functions as a hands-free set, but with all the caveats normally associated with such sets. Bummer.

I decided to keep the unit anyway, however, because otherwise it is excellent. The modern features, such as showing the speed limit of the road you're on, as well as your current speed, (among other features) make this unit very useful & easy to use. I love it. But... back to the old Bluetooth earbud.

"expensive for what it offers" 2009-09-26
By H. Dudley (AZ, USA)
Garmin is known for it's versatile GPSs. However, their incessant referral to it's Bluetooth technology needs a little explanation. It is only viable to a limited number of cellphones with Bluetooth. If this option is important, I highly advise that you first check that your phone is compatible with this device.

 "Thoughts on my Garmin." 2009-08-23
By Joanne Teller (Lancaster, New York)
I found my Garmin very easy to use. I had an awful time downloading the update until someone from Garmin told me to try using a different downloader (Mozilla Foxfire). With that change it went swiftly but I had tried for days and asked for help a few times before someone suggested making that change. I wish that information had been provided right in the beginning.

 "Very nice, but overpriced" 2009-08-08
By C. Pak (Greenville)
This is a very nice basic all around PND, however I think the current price is a little too high if you consider you can get a nuvi 205 or 250 for more than half this price. If you compare the 1260T to the 1250 though, it' the better deal out of the two. For the small price difference (about $40 at time of review) you get a traffic receiver (which costs more than $50) and Bluetooth.

Here are some observations:

Pros:

- Very fast map update speed, as fast as my nuvi 755.

- Bluetooth worked very well paring and copying contacts. The speaker could use some improvement but callers said they could hear me just fine.

- Nice smaller size. The thickness is 0.2 in thinner than normal nuvis and a bit more than my nuvi 350. The bezel also appears to be a bit smaller, adding to the perception of small size. If you've owned an older 3.5 in nuvi, you can definitely see and feel a size difference.

- User interface has been updated and sped up. A new, smoother and cleaner font is used throughout and contributes to a more "refined" feel for the interface. Menus are fast and you never feel like the unit is sluggish or lagging (like in my trusty nuvi 350).

- The included traffic receiver worked well and picked up traffic info very fast. I have never found these traffic data services to be very reliable but included here because that's not Garmin's fault. Note, the "free" traffic shows pop-up advertisements balloons on your map display during idle times (supposedly).

Cons:

- The mounting cradle is a two-step/two-handed affair, unplug the mini-USB then unmount from the two point cradle. The older, better quality cradle is literally one click grab and go from a nice powered cradle. Don't know why they removed that (cost savings?).

- A common complaint: less detail shown on maps. The newer nuvi's show fewer street names at the same zoom level as the older units. The argument being this reduces clutter. I'm not happy with it, but it's not a deal breaker. Garmin has added alot of other information to the map display and I can understand they don't want to overwhelm the user with text.

-Some features that are missing from the newer widescreen versions: Lane Assist, Lane Guidance, customizable vertical data fields (all removed due to smaller screen).

- When comparing the map display to a nuvi 755, I noticed the 1260 rendered the streets with less smoothing, showing more "jaggies" on curved roads. This could be how they sped up the map display.

- Mine came with 2010.10 maps, the new 2010.20 maps are out. You only get one free update after purchase, so I think it should come preloaded with 2010.20 maps so you have the opportunity to get the next update free. Newer units in the next few weeks should ship with .20 maps.

- I wish they would bring back the compass N arrow on the map display.

"What you expect from Garmin" 2009-07-07
By S. Chen (San Jose, CA USA)
No surprises with this unit. It is quality-built and includes the latest version of the Garmin software. I previously had a 350, so the software is an evolutionary improvement.

However, I am very surprised by the cheapness displayed by Garmin in that they do not include a carrying case or even an AC wall charger! The only charger included is a car charger. I had to buy my own carrying case and charger, so the real cost of this unit was +$30.

This is my second Garmin Nuvi 350 that I've own (my car was stolen and had to replace the first). I'm actually finding this refurbished unit to be more reliable then the first which I bought brand new! Although it sometimes has a slight delay in finding the current satellite location, I've simply learned to be sure I program the address outdoors and allow a few extra minutes for the unit to calculate. Outside of that, it's extremely easy to use and has various displays to suite your preference. Garmin has an excellent reputation and the refurbished unit is the best bang for your buck!

I bought a refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350. It is the first GPS receiver I have owned, though my son has had a Garmin for several months. I agree with the majority of respondents that you would have a difficult time distinguishing refurbished from new. My unit arrived on time and had maps that were a little out of date. Getting them updated online was easy. It took about an hour with Roadrunner. The Nuvi 350 is simple to use and has some nice features. I did not need the mp3 player, book player or picture viewer, but text to speech was essential and I could not beat the value or the $110 price. It worked great on the road. Satellites were quickly accessed and a suitable route determined. The routes were not always what I would have chosen, but I can see the value of gps devices in a strange city. I am completely satisfied with the purchase.

 "So far: So/So" 2009-08-10
By dimperioa (PA USA)
I purchased a factory refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350 in July 2009. This was my first time owning, but not using, a GPS. I received the product fairly quickly and in great shape, no scratches or screen problems. It came with a GPS to computer cable, a dashboard and windshield mount, a car charger, a carrying case, and a small pamphlet of information (the manual is on the GPS memory/or online). It also came with the North American 2009 maps. I tested out connecting to my computer and even adding mp3 files, all good so far. However, when I used it on a test drive it lost its signal on a long, open stretch of road and need to be turned off and reset. It also was difficult to hear when using with the windows down, but that is sort of expected.

Pros:

Good screen brightness.

Included all accessories and new maps.

Mounts easily and effectively.

Announces the Street names before turning.

Good Battery life.

Cons:

Sometimes loses signal and needs to be turned off, and or reset(hard to do while driving).

Low volume if driving with windows down.

ABC, not QWERTY on screen keyboard.

Have to press Warning agree button every time turned on.

Released in 2005.

Neither:

From pressing the On button until Maps are loaded it takes about 30-40 seconds.

Flip up antenna.

Overall at this point it is only OK for me, I will need to test it out more to see if it loses it signal more times when I am driving (about 4 times so far), but that is the my biggest problem with it.

I bought a refurb garmin 260. Does everything I need it to do. It is a basic GPS system without a few of the latest bells and whistle (ie bluetooth, mp3, widescreen) but quite frankly I think most of them are over-rated. Had no problems with the unit being sold as a refurb and downloaded the latest maps.

"Great GPS - Mounting Kit Missing" 2009-08-03

This is a great little GPS. It's inexpensive, calculates routes/re-routes quickly, and tells you the street names. However, the mounting bracket was missing in this refurb package, eradicating the savings both from the refurb condition and the online purchase. I'm sure this was an oversight, as I am generally very pleased with Garmin and Garmin refurbished products. We buy GPS units regularly for our business.

You can't go with a Garmin, especially for the low price Amazon offers. I have used a TomTom and a Garmin now and I don't see much of a difference. Both GPS devices have their issues when it comes to navigation. Sometimes if you know the area, it will try to take you the long way when you already know a better way. Great for areas that are unfamiliar to you. Very easy to access European maps as well.

"Did not recognize the auto exit I needed for Venice cost me 20 extra miles. Returned on an older road and it routed me perfectly" 2009-09-14

Works well enough, but not perfectly, I would recommend it as a very good value. BW

"good european maps at bargain price" 2009-09-07

i recently used this garmin in london, where in fact it is even more accurate in road selection than in the new york area. It has speed camera locations in addition in england, an added bonus. it does not have text to speech (so i deduct a star) , but at this price u r getting 2 continents of maps for free!

 "GPS across Germany" 2009-08-16
By smokey (Ohio)
Bought Nuvi 270 specifically for trip through Germany. Drove 1700km using it for primary navigation with map backup. I have experience using GPS by tom tom and Navman for road travel in North America. This unit is nice and compact but feels solidly built. It captured signal and location quickly. Data base was quite complete with country roads that see as much tractor traffic as cars present. Display and user interface as good as or beter than the other 2 units I use. One map glitch where it showed a traffic circle and there was none - big deal. 2 hard to interpret situations misled me but rerouted pretty well. 1 comic situation when it gave us about 540 degrees of turn lefts in a row. I don't speak German and this unit made driving much easier than last trip 6 years ago. Helps alot if you know specific addresses of your destinations or at least postal code.
