"Works Well Prior to Breaking" 2009-08-29
By J. D. Gullett (Ohio)
Initially after purchasing this item along with the large-diameter handlebar ring, I was very happy with its performance. The unit is held solidly in place, and it is practically impossible for this unit to accidentally come apart (when intact). However, after about 1,500 miles (2,400 km) on my road bike, my unit started to vibrate wildly in the carrier. 30 miles later, the unit fell completely off of the handlebars. Fortunately, I always wrapped the wrist-strap around the handlebars to prevent damage to the GPS in the event of such a failure, so my GPSMap 76Csx came out unscathed. I recommend that anyone else using this product to take the same precautionary measure: loop your GPS unit around the handlebars and through the wrist-strap prior to snapping it into the handlebar mounting bracket.

Overall, I am disappointed that I had to order the large-diameter connection ring separately, and that the unit failed so soon after purchase (about 5 months of riding). However, there was some "good" news about how the handlebar mount actually broke: the only part affected was the back-plate that connects directly to the GPS. Therefore, I didn't have to purchase an additional large-diameter connection ring to fix this problem.

I strongly discourage anyone from using this unit on a mountain bike due to its fragility, and anyone planning to use it on a road bike should have a backup on-hand in the event that the same product failure happens to you.

Update on Aug 30, 2009: I e-mailed Garmin about the failure, and was told my bike mount would be replaced under warranty, at no cost to me. I am leaving my review at 3 stars due to potential to damage GPS units upon mount failure, and the fact that you still need to have a backup on hand just in case. However, I am extremely impressed with the prompt service I received from Garmin product support.

I am quite pleased with this product. The price was very low, so I was afraid it may be a generic knock off. It turned out to be a genuine Garmin product, and fits my GPS perfectly. The shipping was fast too!

 "Works on Motorcycle." 2008-07-24
By B. Mckechnie (Texas)
I bought this for my 2005 Suzuki Boulevard c50 motorcycle. Fits right in between the original risers, center on the handlebar. It rides a little close to the gas tank however that should get better after I install new risers. The plastic is a little flimsy(maybe flexible is a better word) but not enough to worry. The GPS placement is well balanced on this mount. I still loop the GPS through the lanyard around the handlebar before I mount it, just in case.

 "Works on boats too" 2008-05-24
By Sailorbill (Michigan)
This mount survived a week on the ICW including a 35 knot thrash up the Chesapeake Bay. It attached easily to the round hand rail above the binnacle at the helm, within easy view. It has 2 pieces, a handle bar bracket and a GPS unit bracket that snap together. The handle bar bracket has a rubber insert, so once it was installed, it was secure, and never moved or rotated. The GPS bracket has locking pins so that the GPS unit cannot accidently slide out of the bracket. The attachment of the GPS bracket to the handle bar bracket is positive and gives a loud click so that you know it is secure. It is well designed, and was sturdier than I expected.

 "Forerunner 301" 2009-07-19
By Kristen Hackney (Boston, MA)
I was really excited to get this product as I was hoping to train for a triathlon and was pumped that it included a bike setting. I had a forerunner 201 before which I loved. However, I really dislike this model and I felt I needed to warn anyone looking to buy this model. The satellite is CRAP. I can run the same route 4 different times and get 4 different distances. The satellite goes out - it doesn't matter if I am in the city, on a trail, or just main roads in the suburbs. I have found when I have run races and brought my garmin the mileage is WAY OFF - I'm talking 3.7 according to Garmin for a 5.1. Understandably it has a lot of great features, but not worth the price if it can't do the simple things it advertises. Buyer beware!

"Massive achilles' heel on this one" 2009-07-13
By Matthew E. Greer (Morgantown, WV)
This is a great product in just about every regard. I use it for biking and when I'm on the road I absolutely love it. I then come home and upload my ride into Sports Tracks and it's great.

But... when you first start out (or after a long break), it will take anywhere from 5 to 15 (yes, 15!) minutes to sync with the satellites. This unfortunately makes the 301 frustrating and often useless.

When I'm riding to work I don't want to wait for this stupid thing to sync. When I'm on a long weekend ride my buddies don't want to sit around waiting either. This just makes the thing useless. I am now shopping for another GPS system that doesn't have this problem.

"Works effectively - there are a few points to note though." 2009-05-25
By Iain Cottingham (Aurora, Co)
I have had one of these since February having previously used the Oregon Scientific Heart Rate Logger with Download (until it fell in the kitchen garbage disposal).

The question I could not answer easily when searching was: does this work in the Gym, the answer is: Yes (and no) - there is a setting which switches off the GPS and just records your heart rate, and it works well if your working reasonably hard (elliptical, treadmill etc), although for light workouts (me on my Wii) the heart rate monitor struggles at best.

I have used it whilst Skiing (theres a nice website that uploads your garmin data and even tells you which runs you were on etc), and airsofting.

GPS performance works well except in wooded areas, although useful for navigating the woods, if you need accurate recorded data it will let you down, also as all GPS devices if your out running and you make an accute turn (e.g. 180 degrees) the recorded distance will fall off (the unit records points approximately 4-6 seconds apart. Taking wide loops alleviates this issue though.

Battery life does how it says 14 hours on a full charge is no problem, however after I have downloaded into my laptop, I have picked up the unit for the next run and found the battery dead, so now once I disconnect from the PC I cycle the power to make sure it is switched off.

The Garmin proprietary software works well, seamlessly syncs and displays lots of useful data. Online motionbased software (provides huge amounts of data on your runs, walks etc) works well and with the downloadable Garmin Connect software pulls data off the device as easy as the software on your machine. As I have said before with skiing there are other more specialised websites that either use .GPX tracks or use the Garmin Connect software to easily upload your data.

Any waypoint editors, etc which work with the other Garmin walking/exercise units will read and write data to this device with few issues if any.

Summary:

This is the lowest priced forerunner with a heart rate monitor.

If you dont have a big budget and want a GPS recorder/heart rate monitor get this one.

If you can afford more get the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver With Heart Rate Monitor, apparently this has a better GPS receiver.

This unit has provided me with loads of motivation to get my backside off the couch and get out there and run/walk.

 "Great heart rate monitor" 2009-05-03
By MacInTX (TX)
I have been using this on an inside track as a timer and heart rate monitor. It works great for that. Being able to download the results to a computer for analysis is great. It makes it easy to provide the data to your doctor or anyone else. Today I used the 301 outside and found that the GPS didn't work as well as my Nokia phone (running Sportstracker). So I give this a 4 of 5.

RAM Mounting Systems Handlebar Mount for Garmin GPS 60, GPSMAP 60, 60C, 60CS, 60CX, 60CSx

I bought this mount to replace one that cost more money and failed. I use my GPS mainly quading at the Oregon Dunes and the occasional trail rides and it has saved us longer travel times by having it with us. I always loop my GPS through it's strap to my front rack in case there's a mounting failure. On one of our stops I saw my GPS hanging from it' strap and free of the mount, the original mount failed to secure the GPS by releasing the top mounting button on back of the GPS. That mount bolted to the rack and provided no adjustment for viewing and I think it was to rigid of a mounting system. I love this Ram Mounting System as it provides multiple viewing angles and is a bit taller as well. I still secure the GPS strap to my rack but have seen no problems at all. I have seen that the mount will give a bit when we go through the woopies but not so much that I lose my viewing angle. So a strong mount, with great adjustment, and a great price make this a smokin' deal.

 "Rugged mount" 2009-08-12
By fossilfuelenthusiast (NY)
I used this mount on my dual sport bike and it held up very well to a 560 mile trip. This trip was mostly on dirt roads and the occasional nasty trail. It holds the Garmin securely, however the Garmin started to show wear marks in 2 spots. This was due to sand and vibration. I think a thin film of silicone in those spots will stop the wear. Overall, i'm quite happy with the product.

"Improvised to Make It Right (Tight)" 2009-08-05
By T. Piquet
First time out was a flop - literally. The mount felt like it was securely fastened to the handlebars. However, after about two miles the mount flopped over and was hanging upside down. We have a very nice rail-trail locally. It's a decent place to ride, but in order to get to it from our house we have to bike about 3 1/2 miles on city streets ... a lot of which are in bone-jarring, teeth-rattling pathetic shape. Because of problems I've created for myself in the past by over-tightening bolts, clamps, brackets, etc, I was leary to tighten the U-bolt on the RAM handlebar mount any more. What I did to solve the problem was that I cut a small piece of rubber ... single thickness ... from an old bike inner tube and wrapped it around the bike's handlebar right where I (re)mounted the GPS mount. Now the mount stays put. [It would be helpful if the manufacturer would include a small strip of rubber along with the rest of the mounting hardware.]

"Works great for road riding" 2009-09-17
By DH
I bought this mount to use with my Nuvi 275T. It works great! The GPS hasn't budged at all since I mounted it. Just beware that this won't work with the wide-screen models. The mounting system is similar to the other Garmin cycling GPS units (Edge series) in that it uses two zip ties to mount to the stem. As long as you use everything that comes in the mounting package, it is extremely secure. I highly recommend it if you don't want to buy a cycling specific GPS unit.

"The product description is incorrect" 2009-09-03
By Bill from Schenectady
The amazon product description is not correct. This unit only fits the early NUVI 200 series GPS units. It is properly described in the Garmin website. If I had only cross checked, but Amazon is usually better than this. Now I have to return it.

I had it mounted on the bike and it seems fairly cheesey. The latch does not work well in that you have to really press the tab to the point that I know it will break as soon as you use it on a trip and take the unit off the bike daily.

This product does its jobs. It feels kind of cheap and flimy, and it is not easy to put together, but the product does its job, and spending the money was well worth it. Be careful when you put it together that your garmin isnt facing into the sun causing glare!
