 "Replacement" 2009-10-12

This is a replacement for the original cradle that came with my Zumo 550. The electrical contact pins at the bottom seem to be a problem. One of them froze and one broke off, rendering the GPS inoperable.

By Georgia on my mind. (Atlanta Ga.)
bought as additional mount for my other M/C. What you see is what you get.

Like others, thought cable might be included. (yea, right) Cheaper to purchase both together & save if you need a cable too. Garmin box included tiny screws for mounting wire plug and the four larger SS bolts and nuts for mounting your ball swivel or other attachment. Yes, the tiny special-cut security screwdriver was included too. 5 stars if the cable came with it...are you listening Garmin? didn't think so

 "Correct image, wrong title" 2007-10-01
By William E. Davis (Dayton OHIO)
This is the correct image, but the mount is actually for a Garmin Zumo GPS, not the StreetPilot 2820. I already had one mount for my Zumo 550, and took a chance that the image was correct even tho the title was for a 2820, and luckily I was right.

 "Awesome, functional, perfect gift!" 2009-09-13
By Haley's Mom
We gave this to my dad for his birthday and it was a MAJOR HIT! He was in his car driving around with the GPS and my brothers marking waypoints within 15 minutes of opening it up. The features and great, very user friendly with a touch screen and color display. The camera is a fun and useful upgrade from previous models. It is a great size, big enough for the screen to be useful but small enough to be portable. For anyone who hunts, hikes, travels, etc. I highly recommend this product!

"Garmin Oregon is to GPS as Apple iPhone is to cellular." 2009-08-22
By Richard Graver (Upper Township, NJ USA)
I recently just bought 2 new Garmin GPS units to upgrade my aging Garmin Legend (Original Model). I was hesitant to purchase the Oregon due to the mediocre reviews on Amazon, but ultimately I decided to take a chance.

First I bought the Garmin Dakota 20, and I really liked it. Small, Battery Efficient, Easy to Use, and Paperless Geocaching using the touchscreen. Good stuff. I called my friend who likes to have the latest and greatest, and he told me he had purchased the Oregon 400t when it first came out last year. I took a drive to his house to compare it to my new Dakota 20... Very similar in capabilities, only smaller and less resolution on the screen. After seeing his unit, and how well it ran I found myself craving the higher resolution screen, and 3D Terrain features, so I went up and bought another one, this one, the Garmin Oregon 550. I decided against buying the Oregon 550t because the 550 had a little deeper discount than the "t" version. Ultimately I chose to purchase the 550 since it was around $60 off retail, VS. only $1 less than retail on the 550t. I figured I could add the TOPO maps later. Plus I had also just purchased the Dakota 20, and the $160 difference in cost was sounding pretty good. I have completely busted my mad money for now.

Ultimately I find this unit to be right in line with all of the other Oregon models software wise... it works exactly the same way. So go and read some reviews on the other Oregon models sine this unit doesn't have many reviews yet. It is VERY similar in capabilities, but this one has a few added goodies.. 3 Axis Compass + 3.2MP GEOTagging Camera (Good stuff)...

Another observation between the new 550 and 550t models... Garmin's specs say the these models have equivalent storage, but in fact this is not the case, the 850MB seen in the specs relates to the free space after taking into account the included maps. In reality it is more like 550 = 1GB, 550t=4GB internal memory. Mostly a non-issue since both have a Micro-SD slot behind the battery, which happily accepted an inexpensive 4GB SDHC card, and since SDHC was supported I would expect you could add an even larger one.

Like the other reviewer stated I noticed that the roads on Garmin's 2008 TOPO maps are slightly off.. this is easily recognizable if you load a driving map, calculate a route, and then disable the driving map, you will see the driving route is not exactly on the road. To me this is all the more reason to just get the 550 model (at this point) without the TOPO maps. You can add them later once the road data is fixed. On second thought, the TOPO features themselves on the 2008 map seem fine, only the road data is a little off, so if you are using the maps as they are intended this is probably a non-issue. At the time I just felt like the 550 was a better bargain, only $90 more than the Dakota 20 I had just purchased, which also was still at the full $350 retail price since it is still a brand new model.

The only other glitch was with the Compass calibration, which went haywire for a moment, but resolved itself after a reset, and hasn't happened since. We'll see if it becomes an issue.. but I doubt it. The reset was very fast as this unit boots up very quickly.

I decided to make these purchases since my girlfriend has expressed an interest in "Re-Taking Up Geocaching", we really haven't done it in a while (Since '02), and its such a great outdoor activity. The original point in making these purchases was the ease at which you can add Geocaches into the unit directly from the website with a single mouse click. She was having trouble getting used to adding the co-ordinates into the old Garmin Legend with that tiny joystick, it was VERY TEDIOUS.

So now she has the Dakota 20, and I have the Oregon 550, and we can easily transfer geocaches back and forth wirelessly, and it is easy as pie to download them from [...].

To me, these new Garmins are a huge upgrade from my old "Legend", and they are waterproof and rugged as ever.

I would have given this product 5 stars had it not been for the couple of small glitches, which I expect will be fixed in the future via a firmware update / map update from Garmin.

Truely.. the new touchscreen Garmin units are to GPS's, as the iPhone is to mobile phones. In a class by itself.

 "Sadly unimpressed...." 2009-08-12
By Joel A. Pogar (Parker, CO)
I have had this for a couple days now and have to admit, I'm "underwhelmed" by it so far. I had very high expectations of the 550 and ordered it with the 24K Topo maps from Amazon. Here's my issues:

1. This is my first Oregon unit, but the screen seems small....I'm a big guy, it feels like my thumb covers half the screen when navigating.

2. Compass accuracy is questionable, or at least it seems very "jumpy". If I move an inch, it rotates way more than I did.

3. Not sure why, but it's hard to see in the shade. Outside on bright sunny days and it's easier to see in direct sunlight than in the shade.

4. Having map problems....can't display a 3-D view of my map (open case with Garmin support).

5. All the manuals are on CD and the CD had issues loading in my computer. Had to find a PC that would read the CD and copy to my hard drive.

What's good about it...

1. The camera. While 3.2MP is not "hi-def" by any means, it is nice to only carry one device and have my pictures geotagged. The resolution and quality is respectable.

2. Unit feels very durable....I fish a lot so it's nice that it's somewhat weather / waterproof.

3. Comes with some nice accessories....I was surprised that Garmin included NiMH batteries and a charger.

4. Battery life is good. Although I'm using 2700mA batteries (not the included batteries) I get almost 20 hours from a set of AA.

Maybe I'm being a little too hard on Garmin and I generally like their products. However, for $600 (Oregon 550 and the Topo Map) I was expecting an iPhone like experience....an oohhh ahhhh kind of moment......hasn't happened so far. Not sure if I'll keep it...it's not a "bad" device, just don't know if it's worth $600. I was on the fence about giving it two or three stars....I gave it two because of the price and some of the frustrations I've had getting the maps to work right.

** Update (8/16/09): I did get the map issue resolved....turned out to be a software glitch with the Topo maps, but I did get it corrected. Took this unit on a 3 day trip to the Pike National Forest in Colorado. I would upgrade my rating from two stars to three stars as the GPS was extremely accurate when geocaching....but I didn't even get a full day from one set of batteries and the pictures I took with the 550 were hardly usable. It was cool that they were geotaged, but pretty poor in quality. Because of the price, picture quality and low battery life, it's going back. There are better options for less money.

 "Zumo" 2009-08-16
By R. Baehre (Georgia)
This product, I've had it over a year now, is pretty good as I use it on my motorcycles and in my "cage". I think the two most desirable features, that matter the most to me, is that you can only update your map once (TOM-TOM is forever) and you cant give it voice commands.

The Mapsource software interface is cumbersome compared to the likes of a Google maps interface. But it does get the job done.

Initially, I had constant problems with the unit freezing up on me (I thought the onboard software was made by Microsoft there for a minute)until the latest update. Updates for the unit itself, unlike the maps, are for the life of the unit (sofar).

My reception has always been great and the accuracy has been about 98% of the time. One of my riding buddies has the Zumo as well and we swap maps and routes using the SD card, so that is very convenient. The cradle for the bike is great...very sturdy. The fact that I can plug it into my bikes audio system is nice as well.

This is my first GPS and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoy the freedom it brings me. during the work week, I use it to gauge the amount of time it will take to get somewhere. On the week-ends, sometimes, my wife and I will just head out somewhere and get lost in the Georgia back roads and then hit the "Go Home" button, when we're ready to go home. I really enjoy the freedom.

I would recommend this product to a friend.

"Great product, can only find one significant flaw." 2009-08-16
By Steven T. Wahl (Manassas, VA)
The GPS works fantastic. It boots and acquires satellite quickly, recalculates routes quickly, and the software is easy to use. Touch screen that's glove friendly works well, along with the other controls. Having everything in the box including mount is great, and I like that the mount is fairly secure.

It did take me some time to get my phone to synch with the unit, and incoming calls while listening to MP3s will sometimes get lost when trying to answer. I use the Zumo with my Scala Rider Q2, and have found that I can not get near the same volume with phone calls through the GPS as I could directly through the Q2. Yes, I found the volume control and have it at 100%, but it's still difficult to hear phone calls.

I also thought I'd be able to plan a route and load it to the SD card, then import it...no-go on that, it seems to only find MP3s. I haven't played with that enough yet to determine if it's meant that way of if I'm missing something, but it certainly isn't intuitive if the unit is capable.

I'd buy it again.

 "Sound is low" 2009-08-13
By K. Guerrero
This is a good/great GPS, the only drawback is the Satalite Radio does not work good on a motorcycle that is loud. My K1200S with the baffle removed on a Remus Powercone is very loud, especially when your doing 80 mph.

I really liked the find function, which will tell you how far you are from a gas station, how to get there and phone number (hotels).

Great product but not the Satalite radio on a motorcycle.

"Great Buy for this GPS Rookie!" 2009-08-11
By Greg Moon (Charlotte, NC)
I purchased the Zumo 550 after seeing something very similar at the Harley shop for a good bit more money. My decision to make this investment was based on several experiences where I got lost and almost ran out of gas. I was impressed with the wealth of information available on various internet forums to aid with installation, setup, and navigation. I opted for placement in the center of the fairing on my '07 FLHTCU so it is right in front of my line of vision. Everything works great! I have used the included mapsourse software to plot several trips and have also downloaded directions to all HD dealers in the US. I am using a Bluetooth headset with the GPS and also have my iPhone paired with it. I tried putting some mp3 music on an SD card and the music doesn't sound that great via the mono bluetooth setup, but I can still enjoy music playing through the bike stereo, so its no big deal. There was an initial learning curve with all of the features, but it didn't take long to become familiar and comfortable. Now I take it everywhere I go and don't have to worry about getting lost or running out of gas; it even has a reminder for when I'm getting low and need to find a station. I would recommend this GPS to anyone that's looking for a tough and functional GPS for thier bike.

"Great for the car; So-so for walking" 2009-09-12
By C. Zessin (Illinois)
We used this on vacation (close to 5000 miles all total). It does great. But make sure you take a map with you too.

DRIVING: At times it won't select the best route. We used it a month ago to go about an hour and a half from here. I told it to take us the fastest route (and didnt' have a paper map w/me). It took us on some unbelievably poor back, back roads. We're talking ONE lane gravel. When I got my Blackberry out to double check things w/Google maps, I discovered we could have taken interstate to within 10 miles of our destination, then 9.5 miles on a two lane blacktop road, then just a half mile on the back roads to our destination. Otherwise it does great.

WALKING: I chose this model b/c it had hiking, biking, driving, etc. modes. It should do great retracing my tracks if I get lost while hiking. I was hoping I could take it walking too .... so I could track how far I went and how fast I walked. That didn't work so well. While walking the speed would fluctuate between 0 and various other speeds (1 mph, 3 mph, 4... etc.) even though I had not changed my pace. (this is why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars)

Overall -- it's works really well and I'm glad I got it.

When I was looking for a GPS for my Harley I was amazed at the price point for the Zuma by Garmin. Yes I wanted a waterproof unit, but where I live the gloves on Touch Pad was not a necessity. The Garmin 550 is all that I needed in a GPS. It was easily adapted to my ride and affords me all features except street name turning and bluetooth communication. Still, at a price less than half of the Zuma it was a great deal.

"Terrible device, huge disappointment, big waste of money!" 2009-09-10
By Mark I. Stein
I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 550 because I was moving to a new state, and wanted something small an compact that I could take with me walking through the city, on hikes and while biking. My girlfriend had an automotive model from Garmin. She had said that, while it was very helpful, it was not 100% reliable. Foolishly, I ignored that important warning and blew close to three hundred bucks on this model, which is advertised as being specifically designed for walking, biking and driving. I had read a review from an electronics website, and wish I could recall which one it was, because I would be writing the reviewer as well. It is obvious that the review was based solely on the manufacturer's claims, and not on putting the device through its paces to see how it actually performs in the field. I did put it through its paces for a solid month, and never intend to turn it on again.

First of all, this device has a really hard time acquiring satellites. It usually takes a good, solid ten minutes to acquire satellites, so I had to get into the habit of turning the device on fifteen minutes before I intended to use it, and setting it outside to locate the satellites. Not ideal. Worse still, several times it completely failed to acquire satellites at all, and I was on my own.

Another huge problem is that it is missing a very basic feature: There is no way to leave the device on, but lock or turn off the screen. This seems absurdly basic for a device specifically designed for walkers and specifically made small enough to pocket. Any time you put it in your pocket, doing so activates the touch sensitive screen, and changes your view or, worse yet, your navigation settings. This inability to black out the screen is also a huge drain on battery life. This isn't a problem for a car model which will be plugged into the car, but for a device meant for walking and biking, it is a critical flaw. The company claims that the battery life is "up to five hours." I am guessing that to get five hours of life out of the battery they supply, you would have to turn off the GPS and allow it to sit doing absolutely nothing for five hours. I found the battery life in the field to be under four hours, far less time than my average hike or bike ride.

I also bought the bike mount for this device, and it is equally terrible. The ball-and socket joint is very loose, so as the bike vibrates (even on smooth roads) the monitor gradually sags, which requires you to constantly reposition the screen. Worse yet, on little bumps, the device goes flying out of the mount. I'm not talking about huge jumps on a mountain bike, either. I ride a hybrid, and this device leaps out of the mount on the kind of minor bumps that are a constant fact of city biking.

I would not be so put off by the fact that the touch screen sensitivity is very clunky and slow, and that the user interface is also rather poorly designed if the other features of the device were better. Fortunately, I will never actually use the thing again, so these flaws won't impact my life.

Overall, this device was a HUGE waste of money.

 "Incredibly Fantastic for Motorcyclists!" 2009-09-09
By Jeffrey Cohen (Charleston, SC)
I did A LOT of research before I purchased a GPS. I needed waterproof, custom routes, a computer interface (RoadMap downloadable free at [...]), long battery life, accurate touchscreen & clear display as my priorities. Supplemented with Garmin's excellent satellite reception, the NUVi is incredible! At close to $[...] less than the Zumo 550 (made especially for bikers and exact same screen size), it was great for my budget as well. Minus the bluetooth technology, it even has some features that the Zumo does not, like speed limit zone displays - very useful. I mounted it to my BMW R1150R using a RAM mount especially made for the Nuvi. I just came back from a 2500 mile trip in the mountains free from any navigation drama whatsoever. Every need such as gas, food, lodging etc. at my gloved fingertips! I give the best rating.

we got this just before a 3,000 mile trip through 5 states. it paid for itself the first day of our trip. we were in towns we had not been in before and this gps found everything from gas to specialty stores and directed us easily to our destination with no problem.

it is very easy to use.

we also drove my inlaws vehicle which had a faulty instrument cluster, no speedometer. this gps also tells you speed limits on all roads and tells the speed you are going. we had no wories of speeding because of this unit.

we are so glad we got this and feel it is the best thing to travel with.
