Bought this SD Card Map to use with my Garmin Nuvi 350 on a trip to Toroweep on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The dirt road is 61 miles with many other roads crossing and intersecting with it. Even though many of the roads had Forest Service road numbers, the map often did not show these numbers. The less traveled roads did not present a problem, but some were as well used as the one I was on. If I was counting on only the GPS map, (which is not a good idea) I might have taken a wrong turn several times.

On the same trip, I had similar problems on dirt roads in the St. George, Utah area.

I purchased this to up-grade the base maps on my Garmin. Easy, easy upgrade, just insert the card wait 30 seconds during initial installation and have all of the Northeast in the GPS. Having detailed topo, road, RR, powerlines and even hydrologic details is worth it when out hiking in the boondocks. I esp. like the information on springs and streams, it has precise locations of 4 springs within 1 mile of my house. It really makes geocaching with my son easier and more informative. With accurate topo and stream information it is much easier to figure out a way to hike into to an unknown 'cache. I am planning a trip out west and plan to purchase the appropriate card for that area to make outdoor activities more fun.

This does provide topos of the areas indicated BUT the only distinguishing features in the topos are contour lines, none of the other typical features shown on printed topo maps. Quite disappointed in it.

This is a good product I plugged it in and it worked fine.

The reason I only gave it three stars is because I feel these chips are overpriced and Garmin should make them available to their customers at a much reduced price or even as a free download/upgrade. The next time I buy a GPS system (which I will}, I will look more closely at the cost of the upgrades and accessories necessary to use it. I think Garmin will come out very low on my list and I probably will choose another brand.

It beats the heck out of the base map that came with my Oregon 200 but leaves a lot to be desired. Quite a lot of roads & trails in my local forest, (Deschutes) are not shown and some that are shown do not exist. In spite of all the copyrights and warnings it appears to have been taken straight off a Forest Service topo map I obtained from them a couple of years ago. I looked at points of interest and found it had not been updated in several years. Many listed are gone years ago. The city part streets are also about 3 years old. Better then the base map's 10 year old update. I only wish that Garmin would let me correct the errors I know of on my computer then re-load the map on the GPS!



All that being said, The Oregon 200 with the topo map is one heck of a tool for trecking, ATV'ing or driving the forest! Do bring a good compass though! and if you got room in your pocket a paper topo map.

 "Not what I expected. Check product limitations." 2008-09-29

This software was purchased to be used with the Garmin Rino 530HCX units, but this review may apply to other units as well, so beware.



First to note: You can only use this on one unit, and you are not able to backup the software for safekeeping or for use on more than one unit if you happen to own more than one. One card per unit. If you overwrite it, you loose it. You cannot use this card for viewing on your computer, or back it up for safekeeping. It has a lock code that prevents you from using it in any manner but inserting it into the gps unit. Technical support will not help you with this issue.It does not state any of this on the box. It is a micro SD card with an adapter, so it is small.

Second: On the Rino 530HCX, this product only gives the elevation contour of the area, with roads and some trails. No DEM shading, no 3-D modeling, etc. These limitations are not noted on or in the box, or anywhere on the Garmin website. Technical support said the flat contour map may be more detailed than the US topo map on CD, but they were not specific as to the differences, if any.



I visited the Garmin website, and it did say it had limited capability, and gave a few examples:



From the Garmin website:

" "Limited capability" may mean that a unit may be able to draw all the map features from the MapSource software, such as roads, lakes, nav-aids, depth contours, wrecks, etc., but the interactive capability of the maps may be limited. For example, you may not be able to "find nearest marinas" or look up additional text about a specific mapping feature. "



So before you purchase this product, or any other software product of this nature from Garmin, realize that they may not be fully disclosing all of the pertinent information.

Ive purchased the 60CSX I love the unit but have many complaints about the mapsource that came with my kit. First off the Pacific Crest Trail 2000 that runs from Canada to Mexico which is to hikers like Interstate 5 is to commuters is only listed as "trail". This is unbelievable! Also, in Washington State near Shelton there is a campground known as Brown Creek. It shows this as being in the National Park! It is not! It is in the National Forest.. This is a big deal if you are a hunter! It is illegal to hunt in the Park but not in the Forest. I have found many areas where the Olympic National Park is listed inaccurately.IF there is a better mapping software compatible that is accurate I would love to know about it.

I have been using the Garmin US TOPO series for years. Wish I had switched to the 24K TOPO series long ago.



I am using the product with a Garmin HCx. The biggest advantage is it supports auto routing, which the other Garmin software cannot. This feature alone makes it worth the price. It has settings capability to follow roads, paths, etc. that you need to adjust depending on your planned use. I have used it for hiking, and as a auto GSP.



I also like the ability to quickly change routs. If the calculagted route needs minor modification, you can "drag" the route with the pointer tool to the preferred road/path, and the software recalculated the route.



Other unexpected advatages are the inclusion of MANY busnesses, government, public sites and addresses, all of which can be searched for. I do not know how often these are updated, but I used the feature to find resturants in Oregon on a recent trip. Basically, in the city, it is like having a full blown car GPS mapping software. Yet, when in the field, with the proper defaults set on your computer AND GPS, it will select hiking or biking paths.



The down sides are poor instructions (need to learn it's capability via trial and error).

Routs set up on a computer and transfered to a GPS may not be the same. The reason for the discrepancies is if the routing preferences on the computer and the GPS are not the same, the GSP will recalculate the route.

I must say this is a major improvment over the 100K map. I use this in a NUVI 650 and a eTrex Vista HCx. Don't expect trails and such because that is not in this topo. However, streets and navigation is, on units like the NUVI. Even on the Vista, the contours are such that I can use them for "bushwacking" if necessary. I compared this to the free one that a lot of people use and there is no comparision. That one had no streets whatsoever in my area. I would recommend it if you can afford the price. I got an Amazon discount with a coupon. So, in conclusion, much better than the 100K...great map for Garmins..if the price is OK for you.

I used this with my Garmin Vista HCx and it works well. If you are deciding between the DVD or the micro SD card that loads into the device, get the DVD. It was well worth it! The DVD lets you look at all of the maps on your computer (Mac for me). You can make routes, tracks, and waypoints and load them into the GPS. Awesome! You do need to buy a blank micro SD card for the GPS though. I got the 2 Gig card for about $7 and loaded topo maps for all of WA, OR, and some of northern CA and I left about 60 Megs open! (This took a few hours!) It is also easier to type in route names on the computer than on my GPS. Another cool feature is the fact that you can right-click your mouse on the map and it will grab the 3-D map and move it around like you are looking at it in your hand. From what I can tell, it does just fine including trails. I did notice one trail so far where half of it was missing. Not sure how many errors there are, but I think there are more things correct than there are incorrect. I am also able to use my GPS to navigate on roads and highways and it will give me turn by turn directions. I mostly use my GPS for hiking and these maps are stellar and are at USGS quality. You can print maps, but I don't think their quality is spectacular. Overall, great product! The only problem I have with Garmin products, in general, is that they have TERRIBLE directions. For example: they don't tell you why you would want to make a route instead of tracks, they just tell you how to make each one. Just use it to figure it out, I guess.

Not sure what I can say about TOPO maps, specifically, other than you're going to need them if you spend any time in the back country -- whether you are hiking or backpacking or just bumming around in the woods. The maps are clear and easy to read on my Garmin HCx Legend. They're not cheap, but what can you do? Sure you can look around online for free, compatible, download-able maps from online sources but I found I couldn't always get the coverage I needed from free maps. Simply put, if you're going to be using your GPSr for anything outdoorsy, on the ground, in the western states of Washington Oregon, California or Nevada just suck it up and get these 24K TOPO maps. Not the 50k:1 or 100k:1 ... Get the standard of the realm 24k:1 TOPO maps. Then learn to actually READ a TOPO map if you don't know how.



Garmin provides two, free to download, guides for using a GPSr. One specifically covers using your GPSr in conjunction with a paper TOPO map. These are both good resources and are worth reading; especially if you're unfamiliar with the wealth of information a good TOPO map provides. Get them here:
